A
For people who don’t like winter, animals that hibernate (冬眠) seem to have a great idea. But is hibernation the same as sleeping?
In fact, animals that hibernate don’t “sleep” during the winter. Hibernation is very different from what happens when you sleep. During hibernation, metabolism (新陈代谢) slows down greatly. For example, when lemurs (狐猴) hibernate, they slow their heart rates (心率). An active lemur’s heart beats about 200 times a minute. During hibernation, it beats less than 8 times a minute. Its breathing (呼吸) slows down too. Hibernating lemurs can go 10 minutes without taking a breath. Their brain activity becomes very slow. During sleep, however, animals continue to breathe as usual.
According to scientists, hibernation is a way for animals to save energy. However, animals that live in cold areas are not the only ones to hibernate. Some animals hibernate to keep away from hot weather. For some, hibernation is not because of temperatures. Some animals hibernate when there is no food. Echidnas (针鼹), for example, will hibernate after fires. They won’t go back to usual activities until food grows back. Some animals hibernate to stay safe. Animals don’t smell or move much when they hibernate. This makes it hard for other animals to find them and eat them.
There are many mammals (哺乳动物) that hibernate. Most of them are small—weigh less than 90 grams. Little animals usually lose heat quickly. It is hard for them to stay warm in winter, so they need to save more energy than larger animals do.
11.Where is this passage most probably from?
A.A science textbook. B.A storybook. C.A cookbook. D.A travel guide.
12.What can we know about a hibernating lemur?
A.Its heart beats about 200 times a minute. B.Its brain activity stays active.
C.It can go 10 minutes without breathing. D.It breathes faster than an active lemur.
13.Which is NOT mentioned as a reason for animals to hibernate in Paragraph 3?
A.To save energy. B.To keep away from cold weather.
C.To stay safe from other animals. D.To live through when there is no food.
14.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Most small animals hibernate in winter.
B.Small mammals need to save energy by hibernating.
C.It’s easy for small mammals to stay warm in winter.
D.Hibernation helps animals stay away from danger.
15.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Hibernation is the same as sleeping.
B.Only animals in cold areas hibernate.
C.Hibernation helps animals live through difficult situations.
D.Large mammals hibernate more than small ones.

“Sit”, “stay”, “shake hands”...These are some common dog commands you might know, but how about “find the escalator (自动扶梯)”? It may sound surprising, but this is just one of the most basic skills for guide dogs.
“Guide dogs need to learn more than 30 skills, from avoiding things in the way to knowing different buildings,” said Liu Changtai, 29, who has worked as a guide dog trainer at Xi’an Sunshine Guide Dog Training Center for more than four years.
Liu’s day begins early at 7:30. “I walk the dogs one by one so I can make sure they are healthy and ready for training that day,” said Liu.
Playing with these cute dogs is fun, but training them is not. In fact, it can be rather boring and tiring. “We need to repeat just one order hundreds of times,” explained Liu. “And almost all training classes are outdoors, no matter whether it is burning hot or freezing cold.”
Liu said the hardest part of training is teaching dogs something called “smart disobedience”. As the eyes of blind people, guide dogs must know when not to follow an order if it is unsafe. The dog must learn to refuse an order if it senses danger. By setting up safe practice situations, Liu teaches dogs to understand the things around them. For example, he may tell a dog to cross the street when a car is coming. The dog must learn to see the danger and not follow the order.
Even though the work is hard, Liu believes it is worth it. Earlier this year, one of his dogs was matched with a blind person in Tianjin. When Liu saw videos of them traveling together, he felt very proud.
“That’s why I do this job,” said Liu. “We’re not just training dogs; we’re giving people their lives back.”
16.What can we learn about Liu Changtai?
A.He walks the dogs twice a day. B.He has trained dogs for ten years.
C.He mainly teaches simple orders. D.He is a young trainer from Xi’an.
17.Why does Liu walk each dog separately every morning?
A.To check their health. B.To start training each dog.
C.To build closer relationships. D.To help them get used to the outdoors.
18.What’s the guide dog training like according to Liu?
A.It is mostly indoor work. B.It’s full of fun activities.
C.It needs great patience. D.It changes with the seasons.
19.What is “smart disobedience” according to the text?
A.Refusing unsafe orders. B.Making its own decisions.
C.Waiting for new orders. D.Following the owner’s instructions.
20.How does Liu feel about his job?
A.Simple but boring. B.Tiring but well-paid.
C.Dangerous but necessary. D.Hard but meaningful.
【答案】16.D 17.A 18.C 19.A 20.D

C
Fleas: Hard to Beat
Fleas (跳蚤) are tiny insects that live on blood. Just as sharks are great swimmers, fleas are perfectly built for their life, making them very difficult to beat.
A flea’s body is covered with a hard, shell-like layer (外层). This layer protects them, so it’s not easy to crush them. It also keeps water out. That’s why many chemical sprays (化学喷雾剂) don’t work well on them.
Their bodies also have small spines (棘刺). When a flea moves through an animal’s fur, these spines lie down. But if something tries to pull the flea out, the spines stand up and stick to the fur, just like Velcro.
Fleas are some of the best jumpers in the world. A flea can jump as high or as far as 7 inches. To understand this, think of a person jumping over a tall building! They can do this thousands of times without stopping. Their long back legs have strong muscles (肌肉). When they jump, a special protein (蛋白质) in their legs acts like a rubber band, helping them jump very fast and far.
After a female (雌性) flea drinks blood, she can start laying eggs very soon. She can lay up to 50 eggs in one day! These eggs are as small as pieces of salt. They soon turn into cocoons (茧). Inside, young fleas grow into adults. If they sense heat, movement, or breath, they come out quickly. If conditions are not good, they can stay inside the cocoons for a long time. In only about three weeks, many new fleas can appear. This is why pets and homes can get full of fleas so quickly.
Because fleas are so strong and can have lots of babies fast, they are not easy to beat. So, the best way to deal with fleas is to stop them from coming in the first place.
21.Why are many chemical sprays not useful for killing fleas?
A.Because fleas lay too many eggs.
B.Because fleas can jump away quickly.
C.Because fleas hide deep in animal fur.
D.Because the hard shell-like layer on fleas keeps water out.
22.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Fleas are the fastest insects in the world.
B.Fleas can live without food for a long time.
C.Fleas have strong back legs to help them jump well.
D.Fleas use their spines to move through other animals’ fur.
23.What can we learn about young fleas inside cocoons?
A.They do not need to drink blood.
B.They are as small as pieces of salt.
C.They can only stay inside for a short time.
D.They will come out quickly if they feel heat, movement, or breath.
24.What does the underlined word “crush” in Paragraph 2 most likely mean?
A.Feed. B.Catch. C.Break. D.Wash.
25.Which of the following best shows the structure of this article?
A. B. C. D.

【答案】
例文:
Save Animals in Danger
There are many animals in danger. One of these animals is the elephant. They now face food shortages and shrinking habitats—forests where they live are being cut down.
Animals are at risk mainly because of human activities: people hunt them for profit, and environmental pollution worsens their living conditions.
To save them, we should set up more nature reserves and make strict laws to stop illegal hunting. Also, we need to call on more people to protect the environment. Let’s act to save our animal friends!

A. B. C. D.
