The recent Mountain Fire in Ventura County highlights this alarming trend. Over 10,000 residents were forced to 11 their homes as the fire quickly spread, injuring at least 10 people and leaving dozens of houses in ashes. In just two days, the blaze consumed over 20,000 acres, 12 Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency. Experts point to a destructive “environmental recipe.” Before the fire, forecasters issued a rare Red Flag warning, cautioning that dry winds and low humidity could turn into 13 for fast-spreading wildfires. When the Mountain Fire erupted, strong Santa Ana winds carried embers (灰烬) far and wide, while vegetation from two unusually wet winters acted as ready 14 . As a result, the fire could escalate rapidly, leaving firefighters struggling to 15 it. Climate change has further shifted the landscape. Rising temperatures and prolonged droughts have made vegetation drier and more ignitable. At the same time, wetter winters have encouraged plant growth that later dries out, becoming kindling for fires. Fall and winter blazes, unlike their summer 16 , are driven by intense winds and lower humidity, making them harder to control. Many historical 17 show the severity of this trend. The Woolsey Fire in 2018 and the Thomas Fire in 2017, both occurring in winter, 18 among California’s most destructive. Additionally, more than half of the state’s largest fires have been recorded in the last decade, underscoring the role of climate change. As California continues to 19 with worsening wildfires, the stakes grow higher. Without 20 these environmental shifts, the battle against fire will become an even more difficult game of survival. II. Lately, it’s been hard for Jack Innenan, a 22-year-old TikTok star from Toronto, to create content. “I feel like I’m 21 a keg (酒桶) that’s been empty for a year,” he said. Spending hours shooting, editing, storyboarding, 22 with fans, setting up brand deals and balancing the many other responsibilities that come with being a successful content creator have taken a toll. Mr. Innenan, like so many Gen Z influencers who 23 fame in the last year, is burned out. “I get to the point where I’m like, ‘I have to make a video today,’ and I spend the entire day 24 the process,” he said. He’s hardly the only one. Throughout 2020, social media 25 a new generation of young stars. Now, many of them say they have reached a 26 point. Burnout has affected generations of social media creators. In 2017, Instagram influencers began leaving the platform, saying they were feeling depressed and discouraged. In 2018, many large YouTube creators began stepping away from the platform, 27 mental health issues. But problems with burnout in the creator community are endemic. “If you slow down, you might disappear,” the YouTuber Olga Kay told Fast Company in 2014. When a fresh crop of young stars seeking fame and fortune began building audiences on TikTok in late 2019 and early 2020, many were 28 that this time would be different. Still, they weren’t prepared for the draining work of building, maintaining and 29 an audience. 30 , they have encountered all kinds of problems, including bullying harassment and discrimination. “Some creators get their content 31 too, so someone else will go viral off their content and get all the 32 ,” Mr. Harris said. To cope with depression, many TikTok creators have sought therapy and life coaching, or tried to be more 33 with their fans and friends about their struggles. A TikTok spokesperson wrote in an email statement, “We’re focused on understanding their individual content goals and experiences, and our teams continue to work to provide resources, support, and an open door for feedback.” But even the most 34 platforms can’t eliminate the hazards inherent in a creator’s job, or the pressure many creators put on themselves. “It feels like I personally am failing and may never recover if a 35 flops,” a TikTok creator said. 21.A.filling B.kicking C.rolling D.tapping 22.A.engaging B.identifying C.idling D.reacting 23.A.found B.lost C.rejected D.sought 24.A.anticipating B.conceiving C.dreading D.savoring 25.A.advertised B.approved C.minted D.replaced 26.A.boiling B.breaking C.bursting D.turning 27.A.citing B.concealing C.leaving D.treating 28.A.afraid B.assured C.hopeful D.suspicious 29.A.educating B.monetizing C.quarantining D.tricking 30.A.Above all B.Even worse C.As a result D.On the other hand 31.A.canceled B.followed C.robbed D.stolen 32.A.depression B.heat C.press D.tension 33.A.emotional B.friendly C.open D.optimistic 34.A.helpful B.innovative C.popular D.profitable 35.A.brand B.commercial C.platform D.video Section B (22分) Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) It started during yoga class. She felt a strange pull on her neck, a sensation completely foreign to her. Her friend suggested she rush to the emergency room. It turned out that she was having a heart attack. She didn’t look like someone of a heart attack. She exercised, did not smoke, watched her plate. But on reviewing her medical history, I found that her cholesterol (胆固醇) level was sky high. She had been prescribed a cholesterol-lowering statin (他汀) medication, but she never picked up the prescription because of the scary things she had read about statins on the internet. She was the victim of fake medical news. While misinformation has been the object of great attention in politics, medical misinformation might have an even greater body count. As is true with fake news in general, medical lies tend to spread further than truths on the internet — and they have very real impacts. False medical information can also lead to patients experiencing greater side effects through the “nocebo effect”. Sometimes patients benefit from certain treatment or medication simply because they believe they will. The nocebo effect is the opposite: Patients can experience negative effects just because they expect them. This is very true of statins. In blinded trials, patients who get statins are no more likely to report feeling muscle aches than patients who get a placebo (安慰剂). Yet, in clinical practice, according to one study, almost a fifth of patients taking statins report side effects, leading many to discontinue the drugs. Silicon Valley needs to own this problem. When human health is at risk, perhaps search engines, social media platforms and websites should be held responsible for promoting or hosting fake information. The scientific community needs to do its part to educate the public about key concepts in research, such as the difference between observational studies and higher-quality randomized trials (随机对照试验). Finally, journalists can do a better job of spreading accurate information. News sites are more likely to cover catchy observational studies than randomized controlled trials, perhaps because the latter are less likely to produce surprising results. Such coverage can overstate benefits, claiming for example, that statins could cure cancer; it can also unduly emphasize potential risks, such as suggesting a misleading connection with dementia (痴呆). 36.The lady’s experience of a heart attack is mentioned in paragraph 1 and 2 in order to . A.introduce the topic B.warn against a disease C.explain an established theory D.highlight the writer’s opinion 37.Which of the following examples best illustrates the‌ “nocebo effect”? A.You feel better after taking the medicine that you think will work. B.You feel dizzy after taking the medicine that you believe has side effects. C.You have a fever after taking the medicine even if you know it is harmless. D.You have a headache after taking the medicine even if the doctor says it’s safe. 38.According to the writer, what should journalists do? A.Use as few social media platforms as possible. B.Educate the public about key medical ideas. C.Report as complete a story as possible. D.Spread more benefits than risks. 39.Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A.Doctor Internet is a Liar B.Why‌ “Nocebo Effect” Works C.Watch out for Partial Coverage D.Stand up for Better Human Health (B) There’s no doubt that our climate is changing — NASA says the evidence is clear. Current warming is happening faster than at any other time in the past 10,000 years. But the effect a warmer world will have on hurricanes is hard to predict. Rising global temperatures are likely to impact hurricanes because tropical cyclones (气旋) feed on warm, wet air. But the complex nature of these storms makes it impossible to know exactly how they’ll change over time. On average, the evidence suggests that hurricanes are likely to become more frequent and more dangerous. As the world gets warmer, the air will get wetter, and wetter air means heavier rain. It’s chemistry: the hotter it is, the more evaporation there will be. Storm-induced flooding will also be more likely as ice sheets melt and the sea expands. ________ 40.According to the passage, what is a likely effect of global warming on hurricanes? A.Hurricanes will bring more rainfall due to wetter air. B.Hurricanes will become less predictable in their path. C.The wind speed of all hurricanes will immediately increase. D.The total number of hurricanes each year will definitely double. 41.Which of the following is probably the best title of the flow chart? A.Weathering the storm B.Are hurricanes getting stronger? C.Why keep track of storm? D.Predicting hurricanes 42.Who are responsible for the steps from 1 to 4 in the flow chart? A.Storm coordinator; Path predictor; Storm sensors; Emergency managers B.Hurricane hunters; Storm sensors; Path predictor; Emergency managers C.Path predictor; Hurricane hunters; Storm sensors; Rescue workers D.Path predictor; Emergency managers; Data processor; Hurricane hunters; (C) This holiday season, many of us are reflecting on how we connect with others. While social media can help us stay in touch, it often leaves us feeling isolated and drained. “It is useful to think of the news as an environment,” say Kevin Barnhurst and John Nerone, authors of The Form of News. “The newspaper industry, and now all Internet media, set up a view of distant events and readers feel empowered because otherwise inaccessible places come within their reach. Against that background, the newspaper sets up a world filled with familiar faces and voices.” When reading the news in print or online, they say, people feel “smarter and better connected, if only because they know what to complain about.” Think of the way you feel when reading, watching, or listening to your favorite media personality: we are drawn there because it feels both comfortable and unpredictable. Like the best kind of relationship, it is both familiar and exciting, and we keep coming back for more. In the digital era, social media and news sites, where we spend most of our online time, are elaborately designed using advanced algorithms and user-centric strategies. Their aim is to keep us engaged as long as possible. This is due to an economic model where more clicks, motivated by attractive headlines and personalized content, lead to more page views and thus more ad exposure, maximizing both user immersion and platform profitability. The Internet is monetized at every turn. But the longer we remain online, the shallower our real-life connections can become. If we remain fixed to our screens, we rarely dive deeper, push ourselves to swim out farther than the familiar routes we travel online. Even those ideas which, upon our initial encounter with them in the online realm, manage to strike us as being of a profound and thought-provoking nature, in most cases, scarcely succeed in sparking a reply that extends beyond a simple digital gesture of a “like” or a “share”. If we want all of this knowledge to go further, our engagements to go deeper, then we need to take them offline. That’s what good friends and good conversations do. They let us step out of our algorithm. “One of the great challenges of today’s digital thinking tools is knowing when not to use them,” says Clive Thompson in his book Smarter Than You Think, “and when to rely on the powers of older and slower technologies, like paper and books.” This year especially, it’s important to find ways to connect with each other. But as the book The Joy of Missing Out reminds us, social media is not a one-size-fits-all for communication. This season, we want to remind you that there are many different ways to connect with those you love while still being apart. 43.By “It is useful to think of the news as an environment” (paragraph 2), Kevin Barnhurst and John Nerone convey the following messages that _____. A.news connects people, even in some places that are difficult for people to reach B.news has the effect of influencing our decisions and actions like the environment C.news creates an environment where familiar people can interact with each other D.news expands people’s circle of friends, easily turning strangers into familiar faces 44.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3 and 4? A.Algorithms push the content favored by people, which makes them think deeply. B.By skimming through similar information, people can be convinced to pay more. C.However attractive the news on the Internet is, it fails to inspire in-depth thinking. D.It is only offline that people can communicate smoothly and maintain friendship. 45.Which of the following is the author most likely to discuss after the passage? A.Share the content of The Joy of Missing Out. B.Improve the skills of communicating online. C.Introduce ways to connect with distant friends. D.Remind people of the time to quit digital tools. 46.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A.Searching for Alternatives: Are There Other Ways to Make Friends? B.Offline Friendships from Afar: How Can We Make It Work? C.Is Online Socializing as Great as It Seems? The Unpleasant Truth D.Can Online Communication Help with Thinking? Perhaps Section C (8分) Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. In uncertain times, certainty is over-rated and over-rewarded Type the words “kind of”, “probably” or “perhaps” into an email in Microsoft Outlook and the program might well tell you to think again. If the artificial intelligence-powered “Microsoft Editor” decides you’re not sounding decisive enough, it will warn you: “ 47 ” To me, this suggestion encapsulates something we’ve got wrong in society: we live in a world that rewards those who speak with a strong opinion — even when that is misplaced — and gives very little airtime to those who acknowledge doubt. “ 48 Why? Because that’s psychologically satisfying,” says Dan Gardner, author of Future Babble. “That’s saying ‘let me sweep away the uncertainty for you’.” Research shows that the human brain is hard-wired to hate uncertainty: a 2016 study published in Nature Communications found that when volunteers were given electric shocks, their stress levels were highest when they had no idea whether they were going to be given a shock or not — higher even than subjects who were told they definitely would get one. While confident-sounding pundits might be giving us what our brains desire, the relief they are providing is probably not real. 49 In fact, Psychology professor Philip Tetlock found that there was an inverse (相反的) correlation between the fame of forecasters and their ability to predict the outcomes of events. Prof Tetlock divided up forecasters into “foxes” and “hedgehogs”. Foxes consider all sorts of different approaches and perspectives, and synthesize those into various “small” conclusions. Hedgehogs tend to view the world through the lens of one single defining idea. That makes the hedgehogs worse forecasters but more likely to get attention. 50 Mr Gardner suggests one way to do this would be to tag speakers with some kind of record of previous predictions, much as we are given performance statistics for racehorses or baseball players. A.Yet overconfident “thought leaders” and other public figures are usually the ones who get the most newspaper headlines and biggest social media followings. B.Highly confident statements also promote polarization, encouraging others to respond in the same kind of language when they disagree. C.We are drawn to, and more inclined to listen to, those pundits (权威/专家) who tell us a simple, clear, confident story. D.But wouldn’t it be better if we held “experts” and leaders to account? E.And it makes sense that when we’re all feeling anxious, we would want to feel that some adults somewhere know what they’re doing. F.Words expressing uncertainty lessen your impact. III. Summary Writing (10分) 51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Younger generations fall for the quiet charms of public library A November report by the American Library Association (ALA), drawing on research and a 2022 survey, found that younger generations use public libraries both in person and on line — at higher rates than older generations. More than half of the 2,075 respondents had visited a library within the past year. Interestingly, not all were bookworms: 43% of them don’t identify as readers, yet about half of these non-readers still visited their local library. Libraries have never been just about books. They are community centers — places to connect, create, and discover. For an extremely online generation facing a “loneliness crisis,” libraries are increasingly social spaces too. “We traditionally think of libraries as very quiet...,” said Rachel Noorda, co-author of the ALA report. “It’s a place to be solitary, but also a place to build community.” Talk to any young person and they’ll likely mention the idea of the “third place” — a term from sociology that has become social-media shorthand for spaces beyond home and work where people can gather freely. Younger generations know they lack many of these spaces their parents enjoyed, as the boundaries between home and work fade. Libraries may be one of the few remaining places that ask nothing of them. Yet even as young people rediscover libraries, these institutions and their workers face growing threats. In 2023, New York City mayor Eric Adams cut library funding; in Idaho, new legislation seeks to restrict materials for minors, and in Missouri, Republicans attempted to eliminate all state library funding. Still, there is hope. Emily Drabinski, president of the ALA, notes that most Americans oppose book bans and continue to hold librarians in high regard. “Most people love the library,” she said. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ IV. When the Mountain Fire erupted, strong Santa Ana winds carried embers (灰烬) far and wide, while vegetation from two unusually wet winters acted as ready 14 . A.Doctor Internet is a Liar B.Why‌ “Nocebo Effect” Works C.Watch out for Partial Coverage D.Stand up for Better Human Health 【答案】36.A 37.B 38.C 39.A 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。 根据第一段“It started during yoga class. She felt a strange pull on her neck, a sensation completely foreign to her. Her friend suggested she rush to the emergency room. It turned out that she was having a heart attack. (事情始于瑜伽课上。她感到脖子上有一种奇怪的拉扯感,一种完全陌生的感觉。她的朋友建议她赶紧去急诊室。结果发现她心脏病发作了)”和第二段中“She had been prescribed a cholesterol-lowering statin (他汀) medication, but she never picked up the prescription because of the scary things she had read about statins on the internet. She was the victim of fake medical news. (医生给她开了降胆固醇的他汀类药物,但她因为在网上看到关于他汀的可怕信息,一直没有去取药。她成了虚假医疗新闻的受害者)”可知,作者提及该案例是为了引出“医疗虚假信息”这一话题。故选A项。 37.推理判断题。根据第四段中“The nocebo effect is the opposite: Patients can experience negative effects just because they expect them. (反安慰剂效应则相反:患者仅仅因为预期会出现负面效果,就会经历这些负面效果)”可知,反安慰剂效应是指患者因预期会出现副作用而确实感受到了副作用。选项B“You feel dizzy after taking the medicine that you believe has side effects. (你在服用你认为有副作用的药物后感到头晕)”正是这一效应的体现。故选B项。 38.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Finally, journalists can do a better job of spreading accurate information. (最后,记者可以更好地传播准确信息)”以及“Such coverage can overstate benefits, claiming for example, that statins could cure cancer; it can also unduly emphasize potential risks, such as suggesting a misleading connection with dementia (痴呆). (此类报道可能夸大益处,例如声称他汀类药物可以治愈癌症;也可能过度强调潜在风险,例如暗示与痴呆症之间存在误导性的关联)”可知,作者认为记者应该尽可能报道完整的故事,避免片面性。故选C项。 39.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“She was the victim of fake medical news. (她是虚假医疗新闻的受害者)”以及第三段中“As is true with fake news in general, medical lies tend to spread further than truths on the internet — and they have very real impacts. (与一般虚假新闻一样,医疗谎言在互联网上往往比真相传播得更远——而且它们有着非常真实的影响)”和第四段中“False medical information can also lead to patients experiencing greater side effects through the “nocebo effect”. (虚假医疗信息还可能通过“反安慰剂效应”导致患者经历更严重的副作用)”可知,文章以具体案例引入,分析了网络医疗虚假信息的危害,并呼吁各方采取行动。标题“Doctor Internet is a Liar (互联网医生是个骗子)”形象地概括了网络医疗虚假信息这一核心问题。故选A项。 (B) There’s no doubt that our climate is changing — NASA says the evidence is clear. A.Storm coordinator; Path predictor; Storm sensors; Emergency managers B.Hurricane hunters; Storm sensors; Path predictor; Emergency managers C.Path predictor; Hurricane hunters; Storm sensors; Rescue workers D.Path predictor; Emergency managers; Data processor; Hurricane hunters; 【答案】40.A 41.D 42.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍全球变暖对飓风的影响及飓风预测的相关流程。 40.细节理解题。根据第一段种“As the world gets warmer, the air will get wetter, and wetter air means heavier rain.(随着世界变暖,空气会变得更潮湿,而潮湿的空气意味着更大的降雨。)”可知,全球变暖可能导致飓风带来更多降雨。故选A。 41.主旨大意题。根据图片中“1 The Chief Aerial Reconnaissance (侦查) Coordination All Hurricanes is the nerve centre for hurricane tracking.(1 首席空中侦察协调中心是飓风追踪的核心中枢。)”、“2 Satellites, ships and planes watch the sea, radar patrols the coast and weather station monitor storms that have made landfall. Perhaps 【答案】43.A 44.C 45.C 46.C 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章讨论了社交媒体和新闻网站虽能让人们保持联系,但会使人感到孤立和疲惫,建议人们将交流从线上转到线下,还提及有多种联系他人的方式。 43.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“The newspaper industry, and now all Internet media, set up a view of distant events and readers feel empowered because otherwise inaccessible places come within their reach. Against that background, the newspaper sets up a world filled with familiar faces and voices. (报业以及如今的互联网媒体构建了一种对远方事件的观看机制,读者因那些原本难以触及的地域变得近在咫尺而获得掌控感。在此背景下,报纸营造出一个充满熟悉面孔与声音的世界)”可知,新闻能让人们与难以到达的地方建立联系。所以划线句“It is useful to think of the news as an environment(把新闻看作一种环境是有用的)”传达的信息是新闻能连接人们,即使是在一些人们难以到达的地方。故选A项。 44.推理判断题。根据第三段中“In the digital era, social media and news sites, where we spend most of our online time, are elaborately designed using advanced algorithms and user-centric strategies. Their aim is to keep us engaged as long as possible. This is due to an economic model where more clicks, motivated by attractive headlines and personalized content, lead to more page views and thus more ad exposure, maximizing both user immersion and platform profitability. The Internet is monetized at every turn. But the longer we remain online, the shallower our real-life connections can become.(在数字时代,我们大部分的上网时间都消耗在社交媒体和新闻网站上——这些平台运用精密的算法和以用户为中心的策略精心设计,旨在尽可能延长我们的停留时间。其背后的经济逻辑是:通过诱人的标题和个性化内容吸引点击,增加页面浏览量,从而提升广告曝光度,最终实现用户沉浸度与平台盈利的最大化。互联网的每个环节都被转化为盈利点。然而,我们在虚拟世界停留得越久,现实世界中的人际联结就可能变得越浅薄)”和第四段中“Even those ideas which, upon our initial encounter with them in the online realm, manage to strike us as being of a profound and thought provoking nature, in most cases, scarcely succeed in sparking a reply that extends beyond a simple digital gesture of a ‘like’ or a ‘share’. (即使是那些我们最初在网络世界中遇到时,觉得深刻且发人深省的想法,在大多数情况下,也很难引发除了简单的‘点赞’或‘分享’之外的回应)”可知,互联网上的新闻是为了实现用户沉浸度与平台盈利的最大化,无论它多么有吸引力,都难以激发深入思考。故选C项。 45.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“This season, we want to remind you that there are many different ways to connect with those you love while still being apart. (这个时节,我们想提醒你,即使分开,也有很多不同的方式可以与你爱的人建立联系)”可知,有很多不同的方式可以与你爱的人建立联系,所以作者接下来最有可能介绍与远方朋友建立联系的方式。故选C项。 46.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“While social media can help us stay in touch, it often leaves us feeling isolated and drained. (虽然社交媒体可以帮助我们保持联系,但它常常让我们感到孤立和疲惫)”和第三段中“But the longer we remain online, the shallower our real-life connections can become. (我们上网的时间越长,现实生活中的联系就会越浅)”可知,文章主要论述了社交媒体和网络新闻虽能让人们保持联系,但存在诸多弊端,说明线上社交并不像看起来那么美好。所以“Is Online Socializing as Great as It Seems? The Unpleasant Truth (线上社交真的像看起来那么好吗?令人不快的真相)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选C项。 Section C (8分) Directions: Read the passage carefully. 【答案】47.F 48.C 49.A 50.D 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要批判社会过度推崇确定性与果断表达,指出自信的专家未必可靠,并呼吁理性看待所谓权威观点。 47.根据前文“If the artificial intelligence-powered “Microsoft Editor” decides you’re not sounding decisive enough, it will warn you: (如果人工智能驱动的“微软编辑器”判定你听起来不够果断,它就会警告你:)”可知,前文提到软件会对不果断的表达发出警告,此空应是警告的具体内容,F选项“Words expressing uncertainty lessen your impact.(表达不确定性的词语会削弱你的影响力。)”与前文“不够果断”的语境完全对应,符合语境。故选F项。 48.根据后文“Why? Because that’s psychologically satisfying.(为什么?因为这在心理上令人满足。)”可知,前文应提出一种人们倾向于相信果断言论的现象,C选项“We are drawn to, and more inclined to listen to, those pundits (权威/专家) who tell us a simple, clear, confident story.(我们会被那些讲述简单、清晰、自信故事的权威所吸引,也更愿意听他们说话。)”引出后文对这一现象原因的解释,符合语境。故选C项。 49.根据前文“While confident-sounding pundits might be giving us what our brains desire, the relief they are providing is probably not real.(虽然听起来自信的权威可能给了我们大脑想要的东西,但他们提供的慰藉可能并不真实。)”以及后文“In fact, Psychology professor Philip Tetlock found that there was an inverse (相反的) correlation between the fame of forecasters and their ability to predict the outcomes of events.(事实上,心理学教授菲利普·泰特洛克发现,预测者的名气与其预测事件结果的能力呈负相关。)”可知,此空应说明过度自信的公众人物反而更受关注,A选项“Yet overconfident “thought leaders” and other public figures are usually the ones who get the most newspaper headlines and biggest social media followings. (然而,过度自信的“思想领袖”和其他公众人物通常占据报纸头条,拥有最多的社交媒体粉丝。)”承接前后文,符合语境。故选A项。 50.根据后文“Mr Gardner suggests one way to do this would be to tag speakers with some kind of record of previous predictions, much as we are given performance statistics for racehorses or baseball players.(加德纳先生提出一种方法:给发言者贴上过往预测记录的标签,就像我们查看赛马或棒球运动员的表现数据一样。)”可知,后文提出监督专家的具体方法,此空应提出是否应该问责这些专家的疑问,D选项“But wouldn’t it be better if we held “experts” and leaders to account? (但如果我们让“专家”和领导者承担责任,难道不是更好吗?)”引出后文的解决方案,符合语境。故选D项。 III. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Researches show that public libraries hold a strong appeal for young people, though some state governments reduce support for their growth. In fact, libraries nowadays function as community centers where people read, do research and socialize with each other. Libraries are also a place for those who want to find personal spaces. In short, libraries are irreplaceable/important in people’s life. (60 words) 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍说,研究发现公共图书馆对年轻人有强大吸引力,尽管一些州政府削减对其发展的支持。实际上,如今的图书馆是人们阅读、研究和社交的社区中心,也是寻求个人空间者的理想之地。简言之,图书馆在人们生活中不可或缺。 【详解】1.要点摘录 ①A November report by the American Library Association (ALA), drawing on research and a 2022 survey, found that younger generations use public libraries both in person and on line — at higher rates than older generations. ②Libraries have never been just about books. They are community centers — places to connect, create, and discover. ③Libraries may be one of the few remaining places that ask nothing of them. ④Yet even as young people rediscover libraries, these institutions and their workers face growing threats. Still, there is hope. Most people love the library. 2.缜密构思 第1、4两个要点进行重组,将第2、3两个要点进行整合。 3.遣词造句 Studies indicate that public libraries are highly attractive to the younger generation, despite the fact that some state governments are cutting back on their support for library development. In reality, libraries nowadays serve as community hubs where individuals can read, conduct research, and interact with one another. Moreover, libraries offer a personal space for those in search of it. In brief, libraries play an indispensable role in people's lives. 【点睛】【高分句型1】 Researches show that public libraries hold a strong appeal for young people, though some state governments reduce support for their growth. 运用that引导宾语从句以及though引导让步状语从句对原文第一段和第四段进行了概括。 【高分句型2】 In fact, libraries nowadays function as community centers where people read, do research and socialize with each other. 用where引导定语从句对第二段进行了概括,表达非常高级。 IV. II. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
