If you’ve ever watched a pet dog getting up from its bed and spreading out, with its front paws on the floor and its tail pointing up in the air, you’ll know where the downward-facing dog pose gets its name. You’ll have noticed that many other well-known yoga poses take their names from animals too. But just why is it that so many poses are based on animals, insects, and even birds? To understand where these poses came from you have to think like an old yogi. The activity of yoga started many thousands of years ago. There were no cars, computers, tall buildings, or playgrounds, so instead people looked to the natural world for inspiration (灵感).
Dawatite Basdeo teaches yoga to children and young people. She explains, “Old yogis sat in nature and watched the world around them. They would have been watching the way that animals moved and thinking about copying those shapes. Yoga is about understanding how the world works and your place within it through movement and meditation (冥想).”
Young children are flexible (柔韧的). But as humans grow up, they spend more time sitting at desks or travelling in cars, and their flexibility decreases (减少). Animals don’t have this problem—in fact, they often depend on their bodies and their ability to move to survive. Dawatite says, “Thinking about animal forms and shapes can make the different yoga poses easy to understand and remember. When you think of the way a dog spreads out, you can easily picture what a downward-facing dog pose might look like. ① A clear picture will come to your mind.”
Yoga is also a mind activity, where you think about improving your self-awareness (自我意识) as you move, hold positions, pay attention to your breathing, and meditate. ②
Some breathing exercises practised in yoga also take inspiration from nature, such as Bhramari Pranayama—or bee breathing—where the breath sounds like the buzzing of a bumblebee. ③
Along with taking inspiration from the living beings around them, the old yogis were also inspired by the sights of the natural world. ④ There are postures that mirror the calmness of a mountain or the strength and balance of a tall tree.
“Humans think of themselves as being at the top of the species ladder,” says Dawattie. “But we can gain so much from the other animals on the planet.”
38.What can we learn about yoga from the passage?
A.Yoga was first made because of modern worries.
B.Yoga is more suitable for someone with good flexibility.
C.Yoga makes humans as strong as animals.
D.Yoga joins humans and the natural world together.
39.The following sentence can be best placed at _______.
When you pose like a powerful lion, you might think about its strengths and characters.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
40.Why is “mountain” pose mentioned in the passage?
A.To show yoga is about more than animals.
B.To teach how to stand like a mountain.
C.To prove yoga is just for nature lovers.
D.To explain what to do with the breath.
41.How does the writer share information in the passage?
A.By giving facts and examples. B.By listing historical events.
C.By sharing experiences and opinions. D.By telling different animals.

The doctor was heavier than John, and not such a good rider. But I did my best and went as fast as possible. When we got to Birtwick Park, Squire Gordon was at the door. The doctor went into the house with him, and Joe led me to the stable. I was glad to be home.

四、信息还原
Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” These are certainly words that millions of volunteers around the world could agree with.
In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, to praise and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to what they care about.
46 People who volunteer spend their time doing things they feel strongly about. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal centre to help improve the treatment of animals.
Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people, try out new skills and explore career choices. 47
Take Andrew Makhoul, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, as an example. Andrew didn’t spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19-year-old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than himself. He travelled to an orphanage (孤儿院) in Guatemala in Central America. 48 And it depends on volunteers to stay open.
Andrew doesn’t speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn’t a problem, “You communicated with love,” according to an article on his university’s website. And what he gave out, he got back, “ 49 ” Andrew’s first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he’d be back soon—because he saw love and hope.
US author Sherry Anderson once wrote, “ 50 ” And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do—their work is “priceless”.
A.It’s a chance for poor children to get better care and support.
B.Life will be difficult, but I have the confidence to live a happy, full life.
C.For young adults, valuable lessons may also be learned through volunteering.
D.Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.
E.It is in one of the poorest parts of the country.
F.You could see love when you looked in their eyes.
G.Volunteering means choosing to work without being paid.

七、任务型阅读
I am Jim Hawkins and my story begins many years ago, when my father worked at the Admiral Benbow inn. One day a tall man with a scar (伤疤) on his face arrived. He opened the door of the inn, singing the song I know so well:
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest — Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
“A glass of rum,” he said when he came inside.
“This is a pleasant inn.” he said. “Do you have many customers?”
“Not many,” my father answered. “Well, this is the place for me. You can call me ‘captain’,” he said. Then he asked a man to carry his large sailor’s chest (水兵的箱子) to his room.
“I’m a simple man,” he told my father. “Rum and bacon (培根) and eggs is all I want. Here are four gold coins to start. Tell me when I have to pay more.”
During the day he went to the cliffs (悬崖) with his telescope and in the evening he sat by the fire drinking rum and water. He asked about sailors every day. We soon understood that he wanted to keep away from them. When a sailor visited the inn, the captain was always very quiet. One day he asked me, “If you see a sailor with one leg, tell me as soon as he arrives.”
When the captain drank too much rum, he sang sea songs and told the other customers terrible stories about his violent (暴力的) life at sea.
He stayed month after month, but he didn’t give my father any more money. My poor father was too frightened to ask. Everyone was frightened of the captain and his stories. The only person who was not afraid of him was the local doctor and magistrate (治安法官) , Dr. Livesey.
“If you keep drinking rum like that, you will very soon be dead,” he warned the captain.
