The charity Oxfam has shown that UK people bought 32% more second-hand clothes in 2022 than they did in 2018.
The charity gave out its findings as it started its yearly Second Hand September activity, which encourages people to buy used clothes ,rather than new. Oxfam also wants more people to give away unwanted clothes so they can be reused, and to repair clothes they already have so they will last longer. Some people set themselves the challenge of not buying any new clothes during September.
Buying second-hand clothes is becoming popular in the UK. Besides charity shops, there are stores selling old clothing that shows past fashion, as well as online shops such as Depop and Vinted. Depop says that 90% of its users are under the age of 26.
Buying second-hand clothing is good for the planet because making and selling new clothes can be one of the reasons for climate change. This is partly because getting the right cloth, as well as making the clothes themselves, can use lots of energy and water. Also, new clothes are often carried around the world to be sold in shops. Lorries, planes and ships give off“ greenhouse gases” such as carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). These keep the Sun’s heat in the Earth’s air and make temperatures rise.
Oxfam says that if everyone in the UK gave away all the clothes they had not worn in the past year to charity shops, as much as 4.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide could be stopped from getting into the Earth’s air. That is the same as the waste from a plane flying round the world more than 6,600 times.
“Choosing second-hand clothes gives people a way to take action, ”said Lorna Fallon. “Shopping this way sends a clear message that people want and expect things to change.”
30.Oxfam wants more people to ________.
A.give out their findings about used clothes
B.buy more new clothes during September
C.give away their unwanted old clothes
D.throw away the clothes that are no longer wearable
31.People take part in Second Hand September activity probably because they ________.
A.like making the clothes themselves
B.would like to do something good for the Earth
C.feel like helping give off more “greenhouse gases”
D.are like the mirror to show how people take action
32.It’s clear that if more people give away used clothes to charity shops, ________ will be better.
A.the charity B.the clothes stores
C.the air D.the flying planes
33.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Great Changes Take off B.A Clear Message behind Clothes
C.A Cleaner September Begins D.Second-Hand Clothes Get New Life

It’s 9:30 a.m. Thirty minutes before the party, volunteers arrive and get to work. They hang colorful balloons, set up toys, games and activities, and prepare different kinds of food and gifts on a table. Soon it’s time to play the music and welcome the guests. The kids rush in, ready to celebrate. Happy Birthday!
Every month, parties like this can be seen at some places for the homeless. The host, a nonprofit organization(非营利组织) called the Birthday Party Project, throws birthday parties for groups of kids who don’t have a home. For some children, it’s the first birthday party they’ve ever had.

Since then, the organization has grown. Now the Birthday Party Project hosts about 50 monthly parties in 15 cities. More than 10, 000 kids have celebrated their birthdays at these events.
Jamie Gates, who works at the housing community in Minneapolis, Minnesota, says that the Birthday Party Project holds parties there on the third Thursday of each month. According to Gates, if she doesn’t put up the notice for the next event at least five days ahead, kids will start asking her about it. “They love it,” she says. ““Parents will come to the too. It’s a really good time for them to sit and talk, and for the whole place to come together.”

四、还原句子(共4小题;每小题1.5分,满分6分)
Who helps you most in your everyday life, families, charities, or friends? Don’t forget about your neighbours! Neighbours help you more than anyone else in your daily life. 37
What does it take to be a good neighbour? Here is some advice:
38 . One of the most important things in being a good neighbour is to respect a person’s privacy (隐私). If you go rushing over as soon as new neighbours move in, they may think you are going to come over at all hours of the day, not respecting their privacy.
It is always a good idea to be friendly to everyone in the neighbourhood. This can not only help you get on with them, but will also be a kind of protection for your family and home. 39 If you are friendly to them, they are much more likely to watch out for anything wrong going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens.
Another way of being a good neighbour is to be helpful in their hour of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand, it is good to offer your help. 40
In a word, if you respect a person’s privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbour and anyone would be happy to have you next door!
A.Good fences (栅栏) make good neighbours.
B.They will do the same if you are in trouble.
C.Watch your neighbours closely.
D.So it is important to have good neighbours.
E.Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the neighbour if you are in trouble.
F.If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out to work, they will think you respect them.

Let’s celebrate!
Paige Chenault is the creator of the Birthday Party Project. “Everyone wants a chance to feel known and seen, and a birthday is a perfect place and a perfect time in our lives to stop and celebrate,” she says.
Chenault and her family threw the Birthday Party Project’s first event in January 2012, in Dallas Texas. “We realized serving children in our own community was a great place to start,” she says.
34.Paige Chenault set up the Birthday Party Project because _______.
A.she decided to offer homes to homeless kids
B.she wanted to make everyone feel known and seen
C.it is a great chance to make money by hosting parties Ox
D.she thought it was interesting to play with children at the party

A.Kids look forward to attending the birthday parties
B.Parents are not allowed to come to the birthday parties
C.Jamie Gates is the creator of the birthday Party project
D.Jamie Gates doesn’t put up the notice for the next event on time
36.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Kids and Family B.Volunteers and Parents
C.Special Birthday Parties D.A Good Way to Have Parties
【答案】34.B 35.A 36.C

35.细节理解题。根据最后一段第二句“According to Gates, if she doesn't put up the notice for the next event at least five days ahead, kids will start asking her about it.”
