四、阅读理解
A Lifetime Lesson
Thirty-four years ago, an 11-year-old boy was fishing with his father on a lake. It was the evening before the bass fishing season opened. The boy tied a small bait and practised casting. Soon, his fishing pole doubled over. He knew something huge was on the other end. After a long time, he pulled a very large bass out of the water. It was the biggest fish he had ever seen.
His father looked at the fish and then checked his watch. It was 10 p.m., two hours before the season opened. “You have to put it back, son,” he said quietly.
The boy cried, “Dad! There will be no such big fish again!” His father said, “There will be other fish, but you must follow the rule.” The boy looked around. No fishermen or boats were around. No one would know what he did. But he could see that his father would not change his mind.
Slowly, the boy took the hook out of the fish’s lip and put it back into the water. The fish disappeared quickly.
Now the boy is a successful architect in New York. He often takes his children fishing at the same place. He never catches such a big fish again, but he always remembers that night. He says that fish teaches him to be honest and follow the rules all his life.

Honesty in Daily Life
Honesty is one of the most important qualities for teenagers. It helps us get trust from others and live a happy life.
Many students face small problems every day. Some copy homework because they don’t finish it on time. Some tell lies to their parents when they make mistakes. Others keep things that are not theirs. These small dishonest actions may seem not serious, but they can bring big problems later.
A student called Li Jun once broke his friend’s bike. He was afraid to tell the truth at first. But he remembered his teacher’s words: “Honesty is the best policy.” So he said sorry to his friend and helped repair the bike. His friend was not angry and they became closer than before.
Another story is about a village boy. He helped visitors buy water. He hurt his leg on the way back but still kept his promise. The visitors were moved and the village became famous because of the boy’s honesty.
Being honest is not always easy. Sometimes we are afraid of being punished or losing something. But if we tell the truth, we will feel relaxed and proud. Honesty can bring us more than we can imagine.

Honesty Is Important
Honesty is widely considered as the most valuable quality for every person. It is the key to winning trust and building true friendship with others. Without honesty, we can never get along well with people around us.
There are many reasons to be honest. First, being honest helps us keep a clear mind and a relaxed heart. We don’t need to remember lies if we always tell the truth. Second, honest students can make progress little by little because they never copy homework or cheat in exams. Third, honesty brings us respect from teachers and classmates.
As middle school students, we should behave honestly in daily life. When we make mistakes, we should face them bravely instead of telling lies. I strongly believe that honesty is the best policy, and it will lead us to a brighter future.
