In the mountains and forests of southern China, there stand many stilt houses (吊脚楼). They are built on hillsides and supported by wooden pillars (木柱). They are homes to the Tujia people.
Stilt houses stand high above the ground. The tallest Tujia stilt house is in Zhangjiajie of Hunan. It is as tall as 109.9 meters. Taking a closer look at stilt houses, you will find their beautiful windows, eaves (屋檐) and roofs (屋顶). The windows are decorated (装饰) with patterns of animals and plants. The eaves look like the wings of swallows (燕子). On some roofs, you can see wooden dragons and phoenixes (凤凰).
Why do the Tujia people build houses in the air? Well, it has something to do with the places where they live. Most Tujia people live in southern China’s Hunan and Hubei. The weather there is humid and often hot in summer. People can feel cooler and more comfortable living in taller houses. Also, taller houses can protect people from floods (洪水) and dangerous animals, such as snakes and spiders. Families raise animals, such as pigs and goats, on the lower floors of their stilt houses.
This clever way of living is also welcome in some other ethnic minorities You can also find stilt houses built by people of the Miao, Buyi and Dong ethnic minorities in Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places.

D.Why the Tujia people build stilt houses.

A.To raise animals on the lower floors.
B.To protect themselves from floods as well as dangerous animals.
C.To make their life more comfortable, especially (尤其) in summer.

【答案】9.C 10.C 11.B 12.D

12.根据第三段“People can feel cooler and more comfortable living in taller houses.”可知,将房子建在高处让他们生活更舒服,尤其在夏天(对应 C) ;再根据“taller houses can protect people from floods and dangerous animals”可知,高处的房屋可以保护他们自己免于洪灾和危险的动物(对应 B);再根据“Families raise animals... on the lower floors of their stilt houses.”

① When I was three, I became interested in machinery (机械). Later, I was trying to open an old computer in my kindergarten classroom. In Grade 3, I started learning to program (编程).
② One day in high school, my science teacher advised me to join a computer camp. He gave me a brochure (宣传手册) and I excitedly took it home. That excitement quickly went away as my mom saw the price of the camp: several hundred dollars. That evening, I cried my eyes out.
③ But a few weeks later, I got a phone call telling me I’d be joining the camp. I couldn’t believe my ears. At that camp, I met many kids like me and learned how to build websites. It encouraged me greatly.
④ Two years after that summer, I got another call from the camp director. When we met, he showed me a long, handwritten letter my mom sent when I was 15. She wrote that I was a very smart kid. And she talked a lot about my love for machinery and computers. She ended by saying she couldn’t afford the cost of the computer camp and hoped in her heart that they would still accept me. I was deeply moved by this letter and couldn’t help crying.
⑤ Over the years, I kept learning as much as I could. In 2014, I finally got a job where I could use all my skills. And I can’t thank my mom enough for everything she has done for me. Without her, I would never have the bright life today.

41.根据文章第一段“Then the teacher stops working and decides to do something to help the little boy.”及后文“‘The pain of life is just like salt—no more, no less. However, how salty it tastes depends on the container you put the pain in.’” To help him learn a lesson。
42.根据文章倒数第四行“‘The pain of life is just like salt—no more, no less...’” It means the pain of life。
43.根据文章第一段“A student walks into the teacher’s office with his heavy schoolbag slowly and looks worried.”可知,学生最初看起来很担心;根据文章倒数第二段“The student looks at the teacher with a big smile. He feels much better now.”可知,学生通过老师的引导后变得开心;根据文章最后一段“Thank you for giving me such a lesson. I think I will never forget...”
根据老师的话“‘The pain of life is just like salt—no more, no less. However, how salty it tastes depends on the container you put the pain in.’” He will try to be more optimistic and face problems bravely. Because he learned to put pain in a bigger “container” like a lake.

Rainbow Mountain is also called Mountain of Seven Colors. As its name shows, the mountain has different colors. But what makes the mountain look like it is painted in yellows, greens, reds and purples? The reason is in the ice. When it began to melt (融化), the water mixed with minerals (矿物质) in the ground, turning the earth into the many colors you see today.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, you’d better visit it during warmer months when there will be less rain or snow. The best time begins in March and lasts nine months, when there will be blue skies and fine weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or during evening hours, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny days will probably stop you from taking nice photos.
