On a Saturday morning last November, I got up at 5 to be at the Armory track on 168th Street in Harlem, a neighborhood in Manhattan for the girls’4×2 relay race (接力赛).
I joined the team when I was a freshman at Abraham Lincoln High School. I hadn’t considered it until a girl came up to me and said, “You look like a good runner. Would you like to join the track team?” She thought I would make a good runner because she saw my legs and arms were built, but I was just naturally slim.
I was excited and surprised, “I don’t know. What do I have to do?”
“It is a lot of hard work and devotion. It’s not easy.”
She was right. My team had practice every day from 3:30 to 6 except for Fridays. When we didn’t have practice, I’d run on my own on the boardwalk. I got faster and focused. Track helped me get away from troubles. Arguments with my mom, problems with schoolwork, and dramas with the kids at school. I felt calm every time I ran.
I got to the Armory at 7. My team was already there. We gave each other hugs and high fives. When the officials called for the relay race, I went out to the starting line. Then the gun went off. As I pounded the track, I was focusing so much on myself. I started running away from my problems. I couldn’t see anyone or anything but the finish line. Everything else was just a blur. I fought to the finish line. I wasn’t only fighting against the other teams; I was also fighting to win my battle against my stress.
I could feel the wind blowing against my skin. I felt like I was flying. My stress disappeared. I came in second as I passed the baton (接力棒) to my teammate.
4. Why did the author take up running?
A. By chance. B. Due to stress. C. Out of interest. D. For weight loss.
5. What benefit did the author get from running?
A. Having a regular life style. B. Escaping from her problems.
C. Doing well in school work. D. Getting along well with Mom.
6. What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about?
A. The running process. B. The team spirit.
C. The training hardship. D. The race purpose.
7. What can we learn form the passage?
A. Every dog has its day. B. Challenges build character.
C. Talent is the key to success. D. Accidents can lead to the right path.
C
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be tech-savvy (精通技术的). However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to exert their independence.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
8. Why do many parents want to learn about social networking sites?
A. Because they are eager to explore technologies. B. Because they are bored with their daily life.
C. Because they want to watch their children. D. Because they start to realize their importance.
9. What might be the reason for teens to reject their parents’ friend request?
A. They have nothing to hide. B. Their privacy cannot be guaranteed.
C. They don’t want to teach their parents. D. They can’t choose friends around them.
10. Why is the survey mentioned in the passage?
A. To warn parents. B. To relieve parents. C. To challenge parents. D. To criticize parents.
11. What is most likely to be talked about next?
A. How to bridge the generation gap. B. How to make friends on social networks.
C. How to explain to parents about the rejection. D. How to use the social networking sites wisely.
D
Blue light glasses gained popularity over the past few years with the idea that they protect our eyes against screen usage, but a new analysis shows they might not be as beneficial to our eye health as previously hoped. Spectacles (眼镜) that are marketed to filter (过滤) out blue light probably make no difference to eye tiredness caused by computer use or to sleep quality, according to a Cochrane review of 17 randomized controlled trials of the best available evidence so far. Nor did the review, led by authors from the University of Melbourne and published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, find any evidence that blue-light filtering lenses (镜片) protect against damage to the retina (视网膜), the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
“We found there may be no short-term advantages with using blue-light filtering spectacle lenses to reduce visual fatigue associated with computer use, compared to non-blue-light filtering lenses,” said Laura Downie, senior author of the review and professor at the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in a news release.
“It is also currently unclear whether these lenses affect vision quality or sleep-related outcomes, and no conclusion could be drawn about any potential effects on retinal health in the longer term,” she added. “People should be aware of the findings when deciding whether to buy these spectacles. However, the quality and duration of the studies also need to be considered,” she said. “We performed the systematic review of Cochrane methodological standards to ensure the findings are robust (强有力的). However, our certainty in the reported findings is limited by the quality of the available evidence,” she added.
The studies they reviewed ranged in size and length, with a span from as few as five to as many as 156 participants assessed over different periods, from less than one day to five weeks. The authors said more research with longer follow-ups in more diverse populations is needed to better assess any potential effects. “More studies should examine whether effectiveness and safety outcomes vary between different groups of people and using different types of lenses,” author Dr. Sumeer Singh, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Downie Laboratory, advised for future research.
Instead of shelling out money for special shades, however, experts advise taking screen breaks.
12. What can we infer about blue light glasses?
A. It was thought to protect our eyes against screen usage.
B. It makes a big difference to eye strain or sleep quality.
C. It can greatly benefit our eye health like before.
D. It can not protect our eye health at all.
13. What does the underlined word “fatigue” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Clearness. B. Tiredness. C. Effectiveness. D. Formation.
14. What do we know from Laura Downie’s words?
A. There is a short-term relief for visual fatigue.
B. People should think twice before buying these spectacles.
C. These lenses do harm to long-term retinal health.
D. These lenses affect vision quality or sleep-related outcomes.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The popularity of blue light glasses.
B. The long-term advantages of blue light glasses.
C. The future of blue light glasses.
D. The objective introduction to blue light glasses.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. B 11. C

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.(也许当你选择不把他们加到你的好友列表时,和父母交谈并给出解释会有助于减轻打击)”可知,接下来很可能会谈论如何向父母解释拒绝加他们为好友这件事。故选C项。
