As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum proved its strong disaster preparedness. With flames within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7, the museum’s strong defenses became a remarkable example of resilience.
The Getty Museum’s staff, working 24-hour shifts, patrolled (巡逻) the hilltops surrounding both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The older Getty Villa, home to thousands of antiques, is located in the Pacific Palisades, while the Getty Center in Brentwood houses famous artworks like Vincent van Gogh’s Irises. Equipped with fire extinguishers (灭火器), the staff checked the grounds for embers (余烬), carefully protecting the museum’s valuable collections.
The museum’s survival against the fires was unusual among the deadly destruction that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes. With $9.1 billion and years of experience fighting wildfires, the Getty had invested millions in fire-prevention measures, including fire-resistant (防火) architecture, sprinkler systems (喷水灭火系统), and land defences.
When the flames threatened the Getty Villa, President Katherine Fleming watched anxiously from the Getty Center’s command station, tracking the fire’s progress. The villa, constructed with fire-resistant concrete walls and roofs, remained unharmed though the fire is very close. The same was true for its priceless collection of 40,000 antiques.
Meanwhile, the Getty Center’s architecture, designed by Richard Meier with fire-resistance in mind, features 1.2 million square feet of stone and vast open spaces to prevent fire spread. The museum’s complex sprinkler network was started immediately, wetting the grounds and further safeguarding the property.
While the fires continue to threaten the region, the Getty Museum’s careful preparations and teamwork have allowed it to survive, with its priceless collections and staff unharmed.
4. What does the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Strength to hold on. B. Hope to survive.
C. Willingness to try. D. Attempt to escape.
5. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Locations of the Getty Museum sites.
B. Fire prevention efforts by museum staff.
C. Significant artworks and artifacts in the Getty’s collection.
D. Standard tasks carried out by Getty staff members daily.
6. What contributes little to the survival of the Getty Center?
A. The collective effort. B. The use of stone materials.
C. The vastness of the space. D. The concrete walls.
7. What hidden question does the article suggest about wildfire preparedness?
A. Should museums be moved to areas by the sea?
B. Are sprinkler systems an effective solution inside the museum?
C. Can other organizations afford the same level of protection?
D. Should staff be responsible for fire prevention?
C
Increasing the numbers of a small parasitic wasp (寄生蜂) could help control the brown marmorated stink bug (茶翅蝽), a harmful pest endangering crops including apples, cherries and corn. The wasp, which is from Europe, lays its eggs inside those of the pest (害虫), where its young develop by feeding on the host egg.
Alessia Lacovone at Bioplanet, an Italian biocontrol company, and her co-workers released (释放) 325,000 of the wasps over the summer of 2020. This took place at the places where fruit trees are grown and the pest was known to be present.
The team then collected stink bug eggs to find out how many had been discovered by the wasps and how effectively they had been attacked. At release sites, a wasp discovered 31 percent of the stink bug egg masses and adult wasps came out from 17 percent of the discovered eggs, while at comparative sites where no release took place, these rates were 1.7 and 1.2 percent, respectively.
In addition to these increases, the researchers found that the release of a wasp had no effect on parasitism (寄生) by naturally occurring wasps of the same species, as well as by Trissolcus mitsukurii, another harmful wasp species that also targets the bug’s eggs. Iacovone says the true effect of the wasp release is likely to be even greater than simply looking at successful parasitism suggests, since the adult wasps also feed on the stink bug eggs.
“This European wasp commonly parasitizes eggs. The study shows that releasing more of these wasps increases their attacks on stink bug eggs, which is good news,“ says Glen Powell at the Royal Horticultural Society.
8. What can be learned about the brown marmorated stink bug from paragraph 1?
A It lays its eggs inside the wasp. B. Its feeding list includes fruits.
C. It develops by eating host eggs. D. It comes from Europe originally.
9 Why did the team collect stink bug eggs?
A. To judge stink bugs’ living ability.
B. To see if the release of wasps produced intended result.
C. To determine the reason for the eggs appearing in large groups.
D. To discover where stink bugs deposit their eggs.
10. What’s Powell’s attitude to the findings?
A. Worried. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Uncaring.
11. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Wasp Release Controls Stink Bug Attack.
B. Parasitic Wasps Increase Harmful Pest.
C. Parasitic Wasp Strategy Benefits Stink Bug.
D. Egg-Laying Wasps help Crop Pests Out.
D
Warren Buffett’s father told him not to go into securities (证券). Oprah was warned that moving to Chicago would destroy her career. These stories of famous people being told not to do the very thing that later made them hugely successful are entertaining, but they also show a larger point. Bad advice is very common.
As investor Paul Graham has said, “When experts are wrong, it’s often because they’re experts on an earlier version of the world.”
In a New York Times article, Wharton professor Adam Grant offers a simple prescription-stop giving advice. Wait, what? Doesn’t other people’s advice help improve our decisions? Of course they do, but as Grant points out, giving your advice isn’t the same as saying, “You should do this...”
“When people come to us for advice, we can stop ourselves from giving them a suggestion immediately,” he, well, advises. “People seldom need to hear our conclusion. They benefit from hearing our thought process and our view on the criteria (标准) for the matter. The most useful advice doesn’t tell us what to do clearly and exactly; it helps people see blind spots in their thinking.”
You may want to offer an example from your own life to explain your way of thinking, Grant continues, but “make sure to explain that it mayor may not be suitable for them.”
Each of us has our own unique set of talents, fears, values and limits. When someone comes to you for advice, it’s near impossible to get a full picture of theirs. That means it's near impossible to tell them what they should do. Therefore, advice should not mean “telling people what to do.” Instead, provide a framework (框架) for making the decision. That way advice seekers can put their own variables (变量) into your system and see what answer it gives. This also offers them a chance to develop their own decision-making muscles.
Showing someone how to think through a problem for themselves beats telling them the right answer almost every time.
12. Why does the author mention the stories of Buffett and Oprah?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To explain a rule. C. To give a reason. D. To make a comparison.
13. Why do experts sometimes give bad advice according to Paul Graham?
A. They don’t live in a normal way. B. They hesitate to make early decisions.
C. They have forgotten their earlier experience. D. They base their advice on previous knowledge.
14. What does the underlined word “prescription” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. System. B. Suggestion. C. Argument. D. Effect.
15. What does the author suggest on giving others good advice?
A. Offering them guidance on how to develop their talents.
B Finding a good chance to tell them what they should do.
C. Reminding them of the importance of making right decisions directly.
D. Helping them develop a more complete way to consider their choices.

A 5. B 6. D 7. C
根据第一段中“As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum proved its strong disaster preparedness. With flames within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7, the museum’s strong defenses became a remarkable example of resilience(随着野火在洛杉矶蔓延,保罗·盖蒂博物馆证明了其强大的防灾能力。1月7日,大火在距离盖蒂别墅不到6英尺的地方熊熊燃烧,这座博物馆强大的防御系统成为了resilience的绝佳例证)”可知,当野火蔓延时,盖蒂博物馆展现出了强大的防灾能力,尽管火势逼近,但博物馆的强大防御使其能够抵御火灾。“resilience”在这里表示博物馆在面对火灾时保持不被破坏的能力,即 “坚持下去的力量”。A选项“Strength to hold on”(坚持下去的力量)符合语境。故选A项。
根据第二段“The Getty Museum’s staff, working 24-hour shifts, patrolled (巡逻) the hilltops surrounding both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The older Getty Villa, home to thousands of antiques, is located in the Pacific Palisades, while the Getty Center in Brentwood houses famous artworks like Vincent van Gogh’s Irises. Equipped with fire extinguishers (灭火器), the staff checked the grounds for embers (余烬), carefully protecting the museum’s valuable collections.(盖蒂博物馆的工作人员24小时轮班,在盖蒂别墅和盖蒂中心周围广阔的山顶上巡逻。
根据第五段“Meanwhile, the Getty Center’s architecture, designed by Richard Meier with fire-resistance in mind, features 1.2 million square feet of stone and vast open spaces to prevent fire spread. The museum’s complex sprinkler network was started immediately, wetting the grounds and further safeguarding the property.(与此同时,盖蒂中心的建筑,由理查德·迈耶设计,考虑到防火性,有120万平方英尺的石头和广阔的开放空间,以防止火势蔓延。博物馆复杂的灌溉系统和喷水网络迅速启动,湿润了地面,进一步保护了财产)”可知,盖蒂中心的建筑使用了石头材料、有广阔的开放空间,还有复杂的灌溉系统和喷水网络,以及工作人员的共同努力(从全文可知工作人员的工作对保护博物馆很重要),这些都对盖蒂中心的安全起到了作用。而“concrete walls” 是盖蒂别墅(the Getty Villa)的特点,不是盖蒂中心(the Getty Center)的,所以对盖蒂中心的幸存贡献不大的是D选项“The concrete walls”。
根据第三段“The museum’s survival against the fires was unusual among the deadly destruction that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes. With $9.1 billion and years of experience fighting wildfires, the Getty had invested millions in fire-prevention measures, including fire-resistant

A. It lays its eggs inside the wasp. B. Its feeding list includes fruits.
C. It develops by eating host eggs. D. It comes from Europe originally.
9. Why did the team collect stink bug eggs?
B 9. B 10. C 11. A

B. Finding a good chance to tell them what they should do.
C. Reminding them of the importance of making right decisions directly.
D. Helping them develop a more complete way to consider their choices.
A 13. D 14. B 15. D
