Handshaking may be the most widely used way to greet each other. However, there are some other choices.
Wai bow
In many Asian countries, people greet each other by bowing. In Thailand , a bow is known as a “wai”.
To greet someone, like your teachers, press your hands together near your stomach. Then, lower your head and raise your hands until your fingers touch your nose. To greet an older person or someone your age, do the same thing, but this time, touch your nose with your index fingers instead. And if someone “wais” to you, you can return it. Just place your palms together in front of your chest.
Two claps (鼓掌)
Some Zimbabweans (津巴布韦人) follow handshakes with two claps each. When two people meet, they shake hands and one person asks, “How are you?” Then, this person claps. The other person replies. “I’m fine,” and claps in return.
Shaka sign
This way of greeting has been popular among some people. It started with Hamana Kalili, a Hawaiian man. After losing his three middle fingers in an accident, he used the Shaka sign to greet his coworkers.
To show your own shaka, curl your three middle fingers, straighten out your thumb and little finger, and shake your hand back and forth.

Angela is an online English teacher from the U. K. She would like to share with us her experiences teaching and learning languages.
I remember a Korean student telling me that his parents had bought him a “pig”. It took me a while to realize that it wasn’t a “pig” but a “figure”. There is no “f” sound in Korean, and some students use a “p” sound instead. But you know, pronunciation is a key part of picking up any language.
I once lived in China for four years. During my first year there, I only had English-speaking friends. Later, I decided to learn Chinese, and it opened many doors for me. I made a lot of local friends and had a better understanding of Chinese culture. But at the beginning, I found listening very difficult. I was sad that I could never understand what people said. Things changed when I started listening to Chinese radio programmes. I couldn’t understand everything, but it felt great when I could follow parts of the talk and get the main idea of what people were saying.
Well, as language learners, we’re very lucky to have the internet. It allows us to have talks with native speakers from our own living rooms. And now, we can also make clever use of Al tools out there. By talking with them, we can learn much better.
25. Why did the Korean student say “pig” instead of “figure”?
A. He didn’t like figures. B. He used a wrong word.
C. He thought pigs were interesting. D. There’s no “f” sound in Korean.
26. What did learning Chinese help the author do?
A. Make local friends. B. Speak English better.
C. Travel more easily. D. Become a teacher.
27. How did Angela improve her listening skills in Chinese?
A. By talking with friends. B. By using AI tools.
C. By listening to radio programs. D. By watching TV shows.
28. What advice does Angela give to language learners?
A. Learn from textbooks. B. Only practice speaking.
C. Move to a foreign country. D. Use the internet and AI tools.

Making good decisions is important for everyone. Here are some habits that can help us become better decision-makers.
First of all, think about your mistakes. To make great decisions, it’s necessary to think about what went wrong in the past. However, we should limit (限制) our time. Some people might think that 20 minutes would be a better choice, but in fact,10 minutes each day is enough to help you think about how you can do it better the next day. Keep in mind that you needn’t spend too much time considering your past mistakes. Just learn from them and move forward.
Secondly, know your abilities well. Did you ever think of finishing your homework in an hour, but you found it took much longer? This might be because you were overconfident about yourself. Good decision-makers know what they can do and can’t do. As a result, they can change their ways of thinking and acting.
In addition, take breaks from thinking. Though it’s important to think carefully about difficult choices, like whether to change school, sometimes it’s best to take a break. If you center on a problem for a long time, you might feel more worried. Studies show that letting your mind take a break can help you find clearer answers. So consider sleeping on a problem or doing another activity to give your mind some time to rest.
29. How long should you think about your past mistakes each day?
A. 5 minutes. B. 10 minutes.
C. 15 minutes. D. 20 minutes.
30. What does the underlined part “overconfident about” mean?
A. hard on B. surprised by
C. embarrassed about D. too sure about
31. What should people do if they think about a problem for long?
A. Forget it forever and get some sleep. B. Leave it behind for a while.
C. Leave it to somebody else. D. Ask experts for advice.
32. Which title best fits the passage?
A. “How to Avoid Mistakes”
B. “The Importance of Taking Breaks”
C. “Why People Are Overconfident”
D. “How to Become Better at Making Decisions”
D
Animals living in unpleasant environments have their own ways to help them live. For example, camels have humps (驼峰) so that they can store water for days, weeks or even months. Polar bears’ white fur (皮毛) makes it harder to see them in the snow. And the list goes on.
Meanwhile, penguins from Antarctica have another way to keep themselves warm. The method they use is very interesting-huddling. That means, they like to sit, stand or lie close to each other whenever they feel cold.
The question is, why do they choose this method? The most important reason is that they are trying to keep themselves warm through this method. Penguin huddles can last from a few minutes to a few hours. It all depends on the weather conditions.
In the cold wind, penguins incubate (孵化) eggs without a good place, so male (雄性的) penguins take up this responsibility. During this period, protecting their body heat becomes a great challenge. Huddles come to help in such situations. Usually, the male penguins are at the center of the huddle, where the temperatures are the highest.
Research has found that the temperatures in the huddles can reach as high as 20℃. Unbelievable, right? From temperatures as low as -60℃ to 20℃ above zero!
It can get so warm that some penguins will break off from the group. Just a few birds leaving can cause the whole huddle to break apart. Once the need for warmth returns, they’ll huddle back together.
33. Why do penguins huddle?
A. To play together. B. To share body heat.
C. To find food. D. To fight enemies.
34. Why are male penguins usually at the center of the huddle?
A. They are weaker than females.
B. They are more important than females.
C. They produce more heat then females.
D. They need more warmth than females.
35. What can the temperature inside a penguin huddle reach?
A. 20℃ B. 0℃ C. -60℃ D. 60℃
36. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The responsibility of male penguins.
B. How penguins stay alive in the cold.
C. The importance of animal research.
D. Why penguins live in cold places.

Whether you’re telling someone how to get to your house or guiding a stranger to a local museum, you should know how to give good directions. Let’s learn how to guide others better.
First, instead of directing a person from beginning to end, think of it as directing him from landmark to landmark (地标). 37 These will give the person an idea of the progress he’s making and also let the person know if he’s still on the path you advised him to take.
If you can’t describe the route clearly in words, draw a map. A map allows the person to imagine where he’s going. You can also include useful information, such as the location of landmarks, on your map. 38
Although it might be convenient to give someone directions to your favorite shortcut (捷径), it could do more harm than good. 39 This will reduce the chance of the person getting lost. When considering the simplest route, choose ones with fewer turns, even if the person takes a bit longer.
40 Take time to explain important information, such as possible dangers. If you don’t speak slowly or clearly, the person may miss an important piece of information.
A. Instead, give the simplest directions.
B. Finally, don’t rush when giving directions.
C. And mention important and hard-to-miss landmarks.
D. Giving directions, is harder than just telling someone how to get to a certain location.
E. Also, the map can give the person something to hold on to so he won’t forget your directions.
