Do you enjoy travelling? Are you an animal lover? Why not travel the world and work with animals? From South Africa to Guatemala (危地马拉), there are many things for you to do as a volunteer.
You can get relaxed and excited when volunteering in Guatemala. Beautiful birds, colourful butterflies, small sea fish and cute monkeys are just a few of the animals you can see and help look after. From taking care every day, keeping an eye on animals’ habitats (栖息地) and protecting the environment, you will always have many things to do in Guatemala.
In your free time you can go through the beautiful green forests and walk on the white sandy beaches. South Africa welcomes volunteers to help in their monkey sanctuary in Pretoria (比勒陀利亚). Helping sick monkeys is just one of the jobs that you can do when you volunteer to work in South Africa. Preparing food, caring for baby monkeys and bottle feeding are a few of the activities you will take part in during the day.
Voluntary work with animals is such an interesting experience. Many of the animals cannot take care of themselves and volunteers are welcomed to help the animals.
Volunteer with us and enjoy your time abroad. We believe you will never forget the experience!

“Kids can make a difference,” Craig Kielburger said. When Craig was 12, he started a group to help kids all over the world.
How did Craig start? In the seventh grade, he was so sad and angry to learn that a 6-year-old boy had to work in a factory. The boy could not go to school. He had no freedom (自由) at all. That made Craig think about his own life. Laws (法律) in his country say that kids must go to school and schools should be free for all kids. But in some countries, people need to pay for their education, so children from poor families can’t go to school but go to work.
Craig wanted to help those who didn’t have the same advantages (有利条件) as he and his friends had. As a result, Craig and some friends started Free the Children. Craig and his friends decided that Free the Children should try to give money to set up schools. Craig hoped that learning would help kids in poverty live a better life.
Today, Craig’s group has more than one million members in 45 countries. It is still going strong. It gets much money from lots of kind people and it uses the money to do many good things. It has helped build more than 500 schools around the world. It also pays for health care in poor places.

Volunteering is becoming more and more popular among middle school students. It is a great way to spend our free time and help others at the same time. Last Sunday, my classmates and I took part in a volunteer activity in the community.
We got there at 8:30 in the morning. First, we cleaned the streets and picked up the rubbish. Some students watered the flowers and trees. Then we visited the old people who lived alone. We talked with them, washed their clothes and cleaned their rooms. An old grandma told us many interesting stories about her life. We also sang songs and danced for them. They smiled happily and praised us again and again.
I think volunteering is very meaningful. On the one hand, we can help people in need and make our community more beautiful. On the other hand, we can learn a lot from it. We learn to care about others, to be responsible and to understand the meaning of giving. We also get some useful experience that we can’t learn from textbooks.
If you want to be a volunteer, you can join the volunteer club in your school. You can help homeless animals, teach English to poor children, or help clean up the park. No matter what you do, your kindness will make a big difference to others.

4.Volunteering can help students ________.
A.get good grades B.make more money C.learn to care about others D.buy beautiful things
5.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To ask students to join in volunteering. B.To tell a story about old people.
C.To show how to clean the community. D.To introduce a new club.
The silence of the pond was broken by the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer ducked into (扎入) the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a pair of bright blue swimming glasses. They were passed to another, then into the boat.
On a cloudy Saturday morning in July, a team of 15 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG), looked for rubbish across Cape Cod.
When the team returned, they joked about the trip. “We didn’t even know what it was,” one swimmer said with a laugh, showing an electronic cigarette they had found. “We had to ask a young person.”
Part protection organization, part social club, OLAUG only accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away from them. The idea of this group was from Susan. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked swimming in ponds. However, the world of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her anxious. Then she came up with a slogan (标语): “OVER 65, IF YOU’RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IT IS THE AGE OF ACTION.”
Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond clean-up moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think.
When many people thanked OLAUG for what they had done, some questioned why they called themselves “old ladies”. “You should call yourselves the Mermaids Against Glitter Litter,” they said.

A.A swimming club B.A worrying pond C.A ducking moment D.A warning slogan

Last weekend, our class took part in a volunteer activity in the community. We wanted to help the old and make their lives better. Before the activity, our teacher gave us a talk on how to protect ourselves. She told us to watch out when we carried heavy things. Because accidents can happen when we’re careless.
Some students helped clean up the old people’s home. Others volunteered to cheer up the lonely elders by telling stories. My friend Lily used to be shy, but she tried her best to talk with them. During the activity, an old grandpa had a headache. We called the doctor at once. The doctor told him to lie down and have a good rest. We stayed with him and looked after him carefully. He thanked us a lot and said we were like his grandchildren.
This activity taught us a lot. We learned that helping others is helping ourselves. We also learned to keep calm when we face difficulties. From then on, we decide to take part in more volunteer activities and help more people in need. It’s a great way to grow up and become a better person.

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, has made waves (引起轰动) with a beach clean-up campaign (运动). On April 20th, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign at five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico to remove trash (清除垃圾).
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.”
In 2012, Ryan Hickman started to pick up the trash around the beaches. Ever since then, he and some volunteers have collected about 2 million bottles and cans (金属罐) from beaches, lakes and rivers.
From a young age, Hickman had developed a love for recycling and had always liked trash trucks. He put the two interests together and began collecting recyclables (可回收物) to raise money. In 2017, Hickman gave away a $10, 000 (about 72,000 yuan) check to the PMMC after picking up 50, 000 pounds of trash and more than 200, 000 recyclable bottles.
Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Hickman has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board (登船) the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s influence.

The day starts early for Tang Shengli, a bird protection volunteer in Lanshan, Yongzhou, Hunan Province. At about 5 a.m., the old man is in uniform and ready to start his day’s work protecting and recording migratory birds (候鸟).
Located on the northern side of the Nanling Mountains, Lanshan is an important passageway for migratory birds. From September to December every year, more than 240 kinds of migratory birds fly from Siberia to Australia via (经由) Hunan. In the past 11years, Tang has recorded more than 120 kinds of such birds with his camera. “The flight calls of the migratory birds at night attract me so much that I cannot sleep. I only want to record their lives.” Tang says.
When Tang joined the Hunan Bird Protection Organization (组织) in 2013, he knew he faced a hard task. A number of migratory birds were lost each year because people killed them for trade. Many villagers didn’t think bird hunting was illegal (违法的), and some made a living from it. At that time, during the day, Tang handed out brochures (手册) to villagers in Lanshan to raise public attention of bird protection, while at night, he went deep into the forests to stop illegal hunting.
In 2020, people in Yongzhou set up a new program to stop killing the birds. So far, 43 migratory bird protection stations have been built across Hunan, covering almost all key points on the passageway.
1.What time does Tang begin his day’s work every day?
2.How many kinds of migratory birds has Tang recorded?
3.Why did we lose many migratory birds each year in the past?
4.Have migratory bird protection stations been built across Hunan yet?

Craig wanted to help those who didn’t have the same advantages (有利条件) as he and his friends had. As a result, Craig and some friends started Free the Children. Craig and his friends decided that Free the Children should try to give money to set up schools. Craig hoped that learning would help kids in poverty live a better life.

1.第一段提到“A swimmer ducked into (扎入) the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a pair of bright blue swimming glasses. They were passed to another, then into the boat.”,一名游泳者扎入水中,拿着从水里找到的游泳眼镜,然后传递给另一个人,接着再传到船上,这里传递的流程是从游泳者到另一个人再到船上,所以“another”指代的是另一名游泳者。
2.第四段“To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away from them.”可知,为了改善池塘的状况,这个组织把从池塘里带走垃圾作为自己的“mission”,结合语境可知,这里应该是把从池塘里带走垃圾当作一项重要任务,所以“mission”意思是“an important task”。
3.第五段“They found a sense of wonder at the pond clean-up moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think.”可知,OLAUG在池塘清理垃圾的过程中发现了乐趣,并且她们的团队能做的比人们想象的要多,也就是做得很好。

Martin lay in hospital for weeks after falling from a building in 1981. He faced a lot of surgeries (手术) and began losing hope. Martin’s friends and family members came to visit him.
