It was a sunny morning in April 2025 at Lakeside Middle School. Students were busy with their lessons when a loud alarm suddenly broke the silence. “Fire drill (演习)! Everyone, line up quietly!” Mr Brown, the math teacher, shouted at once.
This was the third fire drill of the year, but students took it seriously. Following the school’s new safety rules in 2025, they covered their mouths and noses with wet cloths—some used handkerchiefs, and others used paper towels (纸巾) from their bags. “Bend down, keep low to the ground!” Ms Lee reminded her class as they walked through the smoke.
On the stairs, no one pushed or ran. They stayed on the right side, leaving space for possible rescuers. Tom, a 13-year-old in Grade 8, noticed an “injured” classmate lying on the floor—a teacher acted to be hurt. He remembered the first aid training, so he knelt down, checked the “injured” person’s breath, and called for help loudly. Soon, two student volunteers with first-aid boxes arrived to assist.
3 minutes later, all 800 students got together on the playground. The headmaster (校长) counted heads and praised (表扬) everyone, “Great job! This drill helped us practice new steps—using wet cloths, helping others, and staying calm. Real fires are unpredictable (不可预测的), but preparation keeps us safe.”
26. When did the fire drill happen?
A. In March 2025. B. In April 2025.
C. In May 2025. D. In June 2025.
27. What did students use to cover their mouths during the drill?
A. Wet cloths. B. Dry towels.
C. Masks. D. Gloves.
28. What does the underlined word “assist” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Organize. B. Treat.
C. Help. D. Budget.
29. Put the events in the correct order according to the passage.
a. Covered mouths.
b. A loud alarm rang.
c. Checked the injured person’s breath.
d. Got together on the playground.
e. Got praised by the headmaster.
A. a-b-d-c-e B. b-a-c-d-e
C. b-c-a-e-d D. b-a-c-e-d
30. What can we learn from the drill?
A. Fire drills are not necessary for students.
B. Only teachers need to know safety rules.
C. Real fires are easier to handle than drills.
D. Preparation and calmness help in emergencies.
【答案】26. B 27. A 28. C 29. B 30. D
文章开篇“It was a sunny morning in April 2025 at Lakeside Middle School”直接点明消防演习时间是2025年4月。
【27题详解】

【28题详解】
结合上下文,Tom对“受伤者”进行急救后,携带急救箱的志愿者赶来提供帮助,“assist”在此处意为“帮助”,与“Help”同义。
【29题详解】
第一段中“...a loud alarm suddenly broke the silence.”对应(b);第二段中“...they covered their mouths and noses with wet cloths...”对应(a);第三段中“...checked the ‘injured’ person’s breath...”对应(c);第四段中“...all 800 students got together on the playground.”对应(d);第四段中“The headmaster (校长) counted heads and praised (表扬) everyone…”对应(e),所以事件发生顺序为:警报响起(b)→捂住口鼻(a)→检查伤者呼吸(c)→在操场集合(d)→被校长表扬(e),对应选项B。
【30题详解】
根据第四段“Great job! This drill helped us practice new steps—using wet cloths, helping others, and staying calm. Real fires are unpredictable (不可预测的), but preparation keeps us safe.”可知,校长的总结强调了演习中练习的步骤以及提前准备的重要性,选项D与原文主旨一致。

Children spend too much time on smartphones and computers now. They are at risk of a lifetime of health problems, such as obesity (肥胖症) and eye problems, according to a study.
The study was carried out by World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF,世界癌症研究基金会) in the UK. It found some actions—like looking at a smartphone or an iPad for a long time—are among the causes of obesity. It shows that obesity has something to do with several kinds of cancer, but physical activities can make that risk low.
“New technologies make people spend a lot more time sitting long, such as sitting in cars, watching television and using computers, smartphones and so on,” the study said. “Less exercise has caused a number of health problems like breathing difficulty, a racing heart, poor bones (骨头) and stress.”
According to the study, 14.1 million people across the world had cancer in 2012 and 8.2 million died from cancer, but about 40% of the cancer cases (病例) can be prevented. “This global cancer burden (负担) will increase to 21.7 million cases and 13 million deaths by 2030,” it said.
WCRF also says that a lot more snacks will be eaten as a result of spending too much time on the screen and not doing exercise.

causes our brain to release chemicals that make us feel calm and happy. Scientists even think that smiling often is enough to increase these chemicals in our brain.

Less Stress, Happier Growth
As middle school students, we often face stress from different sides. The main reasons come from too much homework, high expectations from parents, and competition with classmates. These pressures can make us feel tired and worried.
To reduce stress, I have some useful suggestions. First, we can talk to our friends or family members about our feelings. Sharing problems can make us feel better. Second, doing sports like running or playing basketball helps us relax and stay healthy. Also, listening to music or reading books are good ways to calm down.
