In my first year of art teaching, I followed the teaching plan strictly and began with still lives. Gradually, my students had a good grasp of techniques — shading, perspective and composition. Yet their works of fruits and vases, though accurate, felt empty.
It was in their draft paper on the desk, however, that I first saw the vitality of their emotions and creativity, something I had rarely seen in their formal assignments.
Determined to turn the tables, I designed a new unit titled “Art with a Voice”. I began by asking students to select an emotion card — loneliness, joy, longing — and sketch (素描) freely around it. Hesitation filled the room, pencils held still. I didn’t rush them. Instead, I shared stories of artists who channeled inner worlds into visual form and showed examples where personal memory met craft. Then, I introduced the core assignment: “Create a piece about a memory that shaped you. The emotion must be real.” In the next week, we were buried in developing sketches, experimenting with materials, and talking about what makes a feeling visible.
On exhibition day, I witnessed a quiet transformation. A student working with the theme of “childhood” presented a set of sketches. They focused on a worn tin train from his early years, using our practiced light and shadow to trace its shape and wear. Another student focused on a scarf given by a classmate. She used fine shifts in value and precise line work to depict the fabric and the faded pattern along its edge. The simplicity of the composition spoke softly, yet deeply, of connection and belonging.
Standing before their work, I felt my own teaching shift beneath me. Art is not expressed through polished techniques and imitation, but through the rich expression of emotion. My role, I now see, is to ignite the spark that guides their hand from heart to paper.
4. What does the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. To follow the plan. B. To rearrange the desks.
C. To switch the roles. D. To change the situation.
5. Why are the two students mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To compare students’ skill levels. B. To explain the teacher’s requirements.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the new unit. D. To display the techniques in students’ works.
6. Which of the following best describes the teacher?
A. Strict and reserved. B. Reflective and adaptive.
C. Caring and demanding. D. Accessible and determined.
7. What is the main message conveyed by the text?
A. Art speaks from within. B. Art requires experiences.
C. Art mirrors life’s changes. D. Art improves with practice.
D 5. C 6. B 7. A
根据划线短语上文“It was in their draft paper on the desk, however, that I first saw the vitality of their emotions and creativity, something I had rarely seen in their formal assignments.(然而,在他们那份放在桌上的草稿中,我第一次感受到了他们情感的奔放和创造力的迸发,这种特质在他们的正式作业中我却很少见到)”提到老师发现学生作品缺乏活力,下文“I designed a new unit titled “Art with a Voice”(我设计了一个名为“有声艺术”的新单元)”描述老师决心设计新单元改变这一状况。因此,“turn the tables”意为“扭转局面,改变形势”(To change the situation)。
根据第四段“On exhibition day, I witnessed a quiet transformation. The simplicity of the composition spoke softly, yet deeply, of connection and belonging.(在展览当天,我目睹了一次悄然的转变。
根据第二段“It was in their draft paper on the desk, however, that I first saw the vitality of their emotions and creativity, something I had rarely seen in their formal assignments.(然而,在他们那份放在桌上的草稿中,我第一次感受到了他们情感的奔放和创造力的迸发,这种特质在他们的正式作业中我却很少见到)”以及第三段“Determined to turn the tables, I designed a new unit titled “Art with a Voice”.(为了扭转局面,我设计了一个名为“有声艺术”的新单元)”可知,老师能发现教学中的问题(反思),并主动调整教学计划(适应性强),设计新单元引导学生,体现了其善于反思和适应的特点。
根据最后一段“Art is not expressed through polished techniques and imitation, but through the rich expression of emotion.(艺术并非通过高超的技巧和模仿来展现,而是通过丰富的情感表达来体现)”可知,主要传达的信息是“艺术源于内心”。故选A。
C
For years, David James, who studies insects at Washington State University, had wanted to examine the migration (迁徙) patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarch butterflies tagged (打标签) by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely. Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out — until he got a phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to improve the mental health of those serving longterm sentences. So James began working with prisoners to raise monarch butterflies through the whole process of their transformation. The adult insects were then tagged and released from the prison. Over five years, nearly 10, 000 monarch butterflies flew from the facility. Elsewhere in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers released another few thousand.
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies,” James says. Watching the monarch butterfly change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed,” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too.”
8. What was hard for David to do in his study?
A. Gain financial support.
B. Hire qualified workers.
C. Build a new laboratory.
D. Find enough monarch butterflies.
9. Why were the butterflies tagged before being released?
A. To guarantee their safety.
B. To enable them to fly longer distances.
C. To track their travel routes.
D. To distinguish them from other species.
10. What makes the prisoners feel that they can change?
A. The patience the butterflies showed.
B. The hardship the butterflies underwent.
C. The transformation of the butterflies.
D. The devotion of James to the butterflies.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The impact of the research.
B. The findings of James' study.
C. The release of the prisoners.
D. The life cycle of the butterflies.
D 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据文章第一段中“The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarch butterflies tagged (打标签) by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely(蝴蝶的迁徙路线几乎无人知晓,因为它们的数量太少,难以追踪。詹姆斯说,研究人员每标记200只黑脉金斑蝶,通常在它们的旅程结束时只能找回一只,而且在野外找到200只来标记都是不太可能的)”可知,在大卫的研究中,找到足够数量的黑脉金斑蝶来进行标记是很困难的。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out—until he got a phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla(了解迁徙路线对保护工作至关重要,但詹姆斯一直无法弄清楚——直到他接到了来自沃拉沃拉的华盛顿州立监狱的电话)”以及第三段“The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California.(标签上有电子邮件地址,第一批蝴蝶起飞后不久,詹姆斯就开始收到发现它们的人发来的信息。报告证实,这些蝴蝶在加利福尼亚海岸过冬)”可知,蝴蝶在放生前被贴上了标签是为了能够追踪它们的飞行路线。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Watching the monarch butterfly change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed,” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too.”(看着黑脉金斑蝶改变它们的形态也触动了这些囚犯。詹姆斯回忆起囚犯们告诉他:“这只蝴蝶改变了,也许我们也可以。”)可知,是黑脉金斑蝶从一种形态转变为另一种形态的过程,让囚犯们觉得自己也有可能像蝴蝶一样发生改变。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies,” James says. Watching the monarch butterfly change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed,” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too.”(这项工作帮助研究人员确定了种植马利筋和其他对西海岸黑脉金斑蝶生命周期很重要的植物的理想地点。 故选A项。
D
History, as it is studied today, begins with the earliest civilizations which left visual and literary evidence which historians can collect, analyse and interpret. Western historians begin with the Mesopotamians, the Ancient Egyptians, and especially the Ancient Greeks. These might be the first civilizations to produce complex texts, art and architecture to which we still have some access in the twenty-first century.
Historians study the source evidence left by the people of these periods in order to understand who, how, why and what they were. We are then taught to form different interpretations by other historians within our own theories and research to create a balanced, informed and analytical article, book or documentary. The article must remain dispassionate and aim towards objectivity, removing any subjective prejudice (主观成见) which might emerge before and during research.
However, it is too limited, and it can paint a false picture of the past to both professional and recreational readers by focusing too narrowly on certain events or individuals and completely ignoring other seemingly less important events or individuals through a lack of either evidence or interest. History as a series of events covers the lives of billions of people from every country for thousands of years. Each individual’s actions and everyday life, from their birth until their death, is history, and worthy of study in its own right.
Furthermore, to be objective in an historical essay, one must be separated from one’s study, having no emotional reaction to the evidence and maintaining a tolerance and relativity to historical context, so that the evidence will not be destroyed by modern prejudice.
However, absolute separation, whether through attempted objectivity or distance of time, is useless to historical study. Pure objectivity can never be realized as we are all highly subjective, emotional beings, and what we write will always reflect this: it is what makes us human, and humanity is what we study.
12. How did the earliest civilizations help historians?
A. By recording analytical skills. B. By providing first-hand materials.
C. By presenting high-quality works. D. By simplifying historical research.
13. What are historians expected to do in their writing?
A. Express their private thoughts openly. B. Focus on recent events and modern times.
C. Keep personal feelings out of their works. D. Copy others’ ideas into their own articles.
14. Why is pure objectivity criticized according to the text?
A. It ignores events with no significance. B. It cuts the ties between certain events.
C. It shows an unclear image of the past. D. It acts against human beings’ nature.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Subjectivity: A Threat to Old Civilizations
B. Subjectivity: A Necessity for Historical Study
C. History: The Story of Everyone and Everyday Life
D. History: The Subject Affected by Social Environment
B 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第一段“History, as it is studied today, begins with the earliest civilizations which left visual and literary evidence which historians can collect, analyse and interpret.(如今所研究的历史始于最早的文明时期,这些文明留下了可供历史学家收集、分析和解读的视觉和文字资料)”可知,最早的文明通过提供第一手资料帮助历史学家。
根据第二段“The article must remain dispassionate and aim towards objectivity, removing any subjective prejudice (主观成见) which might emerge before and during research.(这篇文章必须保持客观冷静,力求做到客观公正,要摒弃在研究之前及研究过程中可能出现的任何主观偏见)”可知,历史学家在写作时应该将个人情感排除在作品之外。
根据最后一段“Pure objectivity can never be realized as we are all highly subjective, emotional beings, and what we write will always reflect this: it is what makes us human, and humanity is what we study.(纯粹的客观性永远不可能实现,因为我们都是高度主观的、情绪化的生物,我们写的东西总是反映出这一点:它使我们成为人类,人性是我们研究的对象)”由此可见,人类的本质决定了历史研究不可能是纯粹客观的。
Apps and Your Privacy
In today’s digital age, protecting your privacy while using apps is important. All apps collect data as you use them. Here are some good tips to keep your personal information safe. ___16___
For starters, download apps only from the App Store, not from random websites. ___17___
Before you accept an app’s terms and conditions, look at what information it’s planning to collect and think twice if it’s asking for too many permissions. For example, why would a gaming app need access to text messages? You may think it’s inconvenient, but it’s worth it.
Also, most apps don’t need to know your location, but for those that do, you can choose to enable location services only when using the particular app, another smart privacy safeguard.
___18___ Don’t use your main e-mail address or social media account. This way, if there is a security breach (缺口), your exposure is contained to things connected to that address.
And, of course, use a secure password. This means a long one (at least ten characters) with a mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters—and a unique password for each app. According to security experts, a good trick is to create a memorable “passphrase” by creating a series of random (任意的) words, and then replace numbers or special characters for some of the letters ___19___ Go ahead and write them down—just store it in a secure location (not your wallet or phone case!).
Finally, remember that privacy is an ongoing concern. Regularly review the apps you have installed and the permissions you’ve granted them. Stay informed about the latest privacy threats and solutions. ___20___ By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the benefits of apps while protecting your personal data.
A. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
B. How will you ever remember them all?
C. Why is it so important to protect our privacy?
D. Moreover, create strong, unique passwords for each app.
E. Because it can prevent bad software from infecting your device.
F. Following these four steps will help ensure you’re not oversharing.
G. Sign up an e-mail address just for things like app permissions and e-mail newsletters.
F 17. E 18. G 19. B 20. A

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed? Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.
