After school,it's very difficult for Vishal

Singh to make a choice. He knows he should
really go on with his homework, but the Internet
is so attractive that he can't really pay much
a multimedia centre
attention to his study
"Students have always faced distractions and time-wasters,"writes
Matt Richtel in a newspaper. He says that computers are a real
challenge()for students. They need to pay more attention to their
製
learning.
Students say that their parents are worried about the
distractions and try to control their computer time. But it is still
difficult to manage the time of using computers.

Teachers at Woodside commonly think technology makes it
difficult for students to concentrate(集中注意力)in class, but
they are divided over whether computers and the Internet are the

solutions.

In Richtel's article,English teacher Marcia Blondel feels
disappointed with her students. She isn't able to get them to read 30
pages of a book for homework. In order to solve this problem, she
asks them to take part in a read-aloud of the book in class.
But as some teachers express their worries over students'digital
diets, they are trying to use new technology in the classroom to
制
draw the attention of these 21st-century students. The headmaster
of Woodside High School,David Reilly, asks teachers to build
websites to communicate with students. The students are allowed to

the new technology, the students have more chances to share their
ideas with each other and spend less time on video games. So,
they pay more attention to their study and they don't show up with
bleary(睡眼惺忪的)eyes any more.Mr Reilly also spends a large
amount of money building up a multimedia centre and introducing
new courses like the digital audio recording(数码录像)class.
"We try our best to take back their attention and make them
concentrate on their study,"he says."To a degree,we're using
technology to do it."Some schools are looking to use the Internet
to encourage students to study.
1.According to Matt Richtel, what's a real challenge for students?
2.How does Marcia Blondel feel with her students?
3.Why are the teachers trying to use new technology?
4.Can you concentrate on study? What's your advice to help
concentrate on study?

Some Ideas to Start Your Day Off(休息日)Right
Having success and being able to meet one's goals require
knowledge,a sense of direction,hard work and resources.That
sounds like a very difficult task. However, research shows that
successful people have similar habits in their everyday lives. For
example, starting the day on the right foot is very important to
them. Here are some ideas on how to start your day off right
◇Get up an hour early.
Getting up an hour early is a good way to start the day.Studies
show that your attention span(注意力的持续时间)is at its peak
in the morning. In fact, the morning may be the most productive
part of your day.Benjamin Franklin would probably agree. He once
said,"Early to bed,early to rise,makes a man healthy,wealthy
and wise.”
Drink a glass of water with lemon juice.
After brushing your teeth, drink a glass of water with lemon
juice. Why?Health experts say that this drink jump-starts the
body's metabolism(新陈代谢).Not only does it jump-start your
body's cells, but it also keeps them moving throughout the day.
Don't jump into social media as soon as you wake up.
You wake up in the morning. You decide to check social media.
Well, don't.It's a waste of time and may bring unhealthy emotions.
We've all done it.You see a post about some social problems and
the heated discussion pulls you in.Before you know it,an hour has
passed, and you're angry with people you don't even know.
—61
◇Exercise!
Physical fitness trainers often suggest some form of exercise
in the morning because the middle of the day is a busy time for
most people.By the end of the day,you may not have the time or
energy to exercise.Exercising in the morning prevents that from
happening.
Isabel Smith, one of the experts on the research team, said,
"In order to feel better during the day,I tried the healthy morning
routines for a month. The result was amazing."She also added that
she would keep doing so in the future.
1.When is your attention span at its peak according to studies?
2.Why shouldn't you jump into social media as soon as you wake
up?
3.What did Isabel Smith do to feel better during the day?
4.Is getting up an hour early good for you?Why or why not?(Please
give two reasons.

are choosing to do volunteer work in their free time.

her feel happy and proud.

Brainstorming is a way to come up
with new and smart ideas to solve difficult
problems.It includes bringing together
people with different views and backgrounds
to share their ideas freely and build on ideas.
brainstorming
Here are some key points to keep in mind
when carrying on a brainstorming activity.
First, the group should have a clear goal for the brainstorming
activity. This will help guide the discussion and make sure that all
ideas created are closely connected to the topic at hand. All members
should be encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas freely.
When looking at the quality of ideas from a brainstorming
activity, group members had better consider how many there are
and what they are about. While a large number of ideas can be
beneficial,it is more important to focus on the quality of the ideas
and how well they fit with the group's shared goal.
Group members need to ask for more information about an
idea. This can help the group to decide if an idea fits the goal.If an
idea won't work or doesn't fully meet the needs,it's important to
recognise this and move on to other ideas that might work better.
Besides,it's necessary to focus on coming up with new ideas,
not going over old ones.Members should be encouraged to think
creatively and outside the box,and to avoid getting stuck in the
details(细节).
The number of ideas is important too. While having many
ideas doesn't mean success by itself,it makes sure we think about
all possible ideas.Everyone should try to think of as many ideas as
they can, without worrying if they will work right away.
In the end,a good brainstorming activity depends on the
group's ability to work together towards a shared goal.By supporting
each other's ideas and looking at their value and fit,we can find new
ways to solve hard problems for everyone's benefit.Brainstorming
is a powerful tool that can help us face challenges and work together
for a better and more creative future.
1.What is brainstorming?
2.Why do group members need to ask for more information about
an idea?
3.How can people find new ways to solve hard problems for
everyone's benefit in a brainstorming activity?
4.Do you think brainstorming is a powerful tool to solve problems?
Why or why not?(Please give two reasons.

Have you ever seen shadow plays? The shadow play is one of
the oldest puppet performances in China. It was a popular folk drama
in ancient China and also the ancestor of the films in the world.
Shadow plays were once a popular form of entertainment, and
—62
they were also used for instructional purposes.Simple to perform,
dramas were played out on screens or walls for thousands of years,
and the shadow play is still performed in China today.
A simple lamp and a thin screen were all that were needed for
a stage.Things like people,animals,furniture,walls and plants
were shown on the screen by placing figurines or figures made of
cardboard or leather in front of the lamp.
The lamp lighted the screen from behind, and people could
move little figurines around for theatrical performances. With added
music and sound effects, the plays could be quite entertaining if
they were well performed. These were ancient dramas or cartoons,
and they were even colorized for added entertainment by using
colored translucent(半透明的)figurines. The lamp light cast a
colored shadow.
One can imagine that stone-age people sat next to campfires
and watched stories played out on rock walls by shadows cast by
using their hands or figurines.
It is said that the Mongols in the 13th century liked to watch
shadow plays in their camps. They took the entertainment with
them, and it became a popular entertainment in the Yuan Empire of
the 13th century.
Shadow plays were performed in France when a Frenchman
returned from China in 1767 and put on performances in Paris and
Marseilles. It is said that this is how the shadow play was introduced
to Europe. The plays were popular in France, and they were
called“Chinese Shadows'”at first..
Nowadays,performers use plastics,computer-controlled
lighting and machinery, and modern paint and dyes to produce bright
and colorful shadow figures. They can produce images that are
controlled by computers, and these can be used for animation and
entertainment effects in plays. It is difficult for shadow puppeteers
to compete with modern entertainment technologies for an audience,
but some of them are using modern materials and adopting
technology to help stage interesting entertainment in China.
1.What were shadow plays used for?
2.How were shadow plays introduced to Europe?
3.What challenge do shadow puppeteers meet?
4.Would you like to watch shadow plays? Why?(At least two reasons)验室中都无法奏效,因为这些材料不稳定。第一步是找出那些

Dear Mike,
I'm glad to know that you will come to Beijing this summer vacation

places of interest, such as the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and
the Palace Museum. You can go to the Summer Palace. It is one of
the most popular royal gardens. There you can see lots of ancient
buildings and go boating on Kunming Lake. You can also go to
Laoshe Teahouse to drink tea and enjoy Beijing Opera. It is a perfect

I'm Li Hua,a Grade 9 student.I'm excited to share my idea for
the activity.
I suggest organizing a "Recycling Art Competition"with three
steps.First,a teacher can give a short talk on recycling and show
practical examples, such as making flower pots from plastic bottles.
Then, participants will have one week to create their own artworks
using waste materials. After the creation period, art teachers will
judge the artworks to select the best ones. The top 10 works will
receive prizes,like eco-friendly notebooks or recycled-material pens.
This activity not only encourages creative thinking, but also helps
participants better understand recycling principles, making them
more likely to adopt these practices in daily life.
I hope my idea can be considered.Thanks.

Dear Anna,
I'm sorry to hear that you're worrying about the upcoming English
speech contest. Many students feel the same way before big events,
so you're not alone. Here are some suggestions that might help.
First, try listening to music.Soft songs can calm your nerves and
clear your mind.Second, take deep breaths before going on the stage.
Deep breathing sends more oxygen to your brain, helping you think
clearly and speak confidently. Finally, practice your speech as much
as possible.Repeating it will help you remember the content and feel
more prepared.
Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the process. You've
worked hard,and I'm sure you'll do great!
Yours,
