school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science

Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and
fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores."The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks
and large bottles of soft drinks,"she says."They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful,
insects are awful."Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt in the beginning, most
are eager to try something new.

We've all heard it before:to be successful,get out of bed early.After all,some well-known CEOs
are early risers-one gets up at 3:45 a.m.,another at 3:30 a.m.,and yet another at 5:45 a.m.-and,as
we know,"The early bird catches the worm."Indeed,it may be true that those who get up early have a
jump start on the day before others are even out of bed.
But just because some successful people wake up early, does that mean it's a trait (most of

you want to sleep in until next Saturday, does it mean you'll have a less successful life?
司
For about half of us,this isn't really a problem. It's reported that about half the population doesn't

see themselves as "early birds"or "night owls"-they're more in the middle.About one in four of us,
though, are more likely to be bright-eyed early risers, and another one in four are night owls. For them,
the influence can go beyond falling asleep in front of the TV at 10 p.m.or being regularly late for work.
2
Many studies have found that morning people are more independent and agreeable. And compared to
night owls, they are less likely to be sad, drink or smoke.
"Although morning types may achieve more in school, night owls score higher on tests of memory,
thinking speed and cognitive (ability, even when they have to do those tasks in the morning."
says Oxford University biologist Katharina Wulff,"Night-time people are also more open and more
creative. And one study shows that night owls are as healthy and wise as morning-types,and a little bit
richer.”
Still think the morning people sound more like CEO type?Don't set your alarm for 5 a.m.just yet,as
it turns out, changing your sleep times may not make much difference."If people are left to their naturally
preferred times, they feel much better. They say that they are much more productive. They can think in
many more ways."says Katharina Wulff. On the other hand, she says, pushing people too far out of their
natural preference can be harmful. When they wake early, for example, night owls are still producing
melatonin(褪黑激素).“Then, you stop it and push the body to be in the daytime mode(状态).That
can have a lot of negative influence,"Wulff says, like how the body acts differently toward blood sugar
control which can lead to weight gain and other health problems.
Still believe "The early bird catches the worm."?Maybe the saying should be "The bird that follows
its own clock catches the worm!"
()30.According to the passage, what can we learn about night owls?
A.They like sleeping in front of the TV.
B.They are more likely to be successful.
C.They are less independent than morning people.
D.Half the population see themselves as night owls.
)31.Which of the following does Katharina Wulff probably agree?
A.Keeping your sleep habits is better.
B.Setting an alarm for 5 a.m.is necessary.
C.Changing natural sleep times can make you more creative.
D.Getting up early can help you score higher on tests of memory
(
)32.The word "negative"in Paragraph 6 most probably means
A.important
B.sad
C.harmful
D.amazing
)33.What's the writer's main purpose of writing this passage?
A.To explain why some people are more successful.
B.To advise people to get up neither too early nor too late.
C.To compare the differences between early risers and night owls.
D.To argue against the opinion that getting up early leads to success.

The Sport of Concentration
Every day,it seems,a new gadget (promises to help me run farther and faster, sleep better,or
monitor my heart rate more effectively. These gadgets state they'll make me a "better me"or so the story
goes.
Some of them might actually help, but a few months ago,I decided to sell all my sports gadgets.I
now record my running times with just a pen and a notepad.Soon after,I started training for a marathon
the old-fashioned way-without a device on my wrist tracking my pace or heart rate.To my surprise,
running without all that information turned out to be a real joy.
In the past, whenever my smartwatch told me I was running slower than I "should",I'd force myself
to speed up,even if it was clear that my body didn't want to.But this time,I ran the way I wanted to.
Many times,I was surprised to see real breakthroughs in my running times when I checked my
notepad after workouts. If I had seen those numbers during the run,I might have slowed down. But since
I didn't know,I just kept running.
Another positive thing about getting rid of all my running gadgets is that it's helping me concentrate
more on the running itself.Since I no longer feel like I need technology to run well,I can go out and run
金星
without worrying about battery life.
So,what's the lesson here?Well,we could very easily replace the example of running with writing,
studying,or anything else.No matter what it is,the more we worry about improving, the more it hurts
our performance.
Should you stop using technology to "improve"your performance?Of course, that's up to you.
However,if I were asked that question,I'd certainly say that I'm better off without it.
34.How does the writer record running times now?
35.How did the writer feel when he saw real breakthroughs in his running times?
36.What is another positive thing about not using running gadgets anymore?
37.What do you think of sports gadgets? Why do you think so?(Give at least 2 reasons.
