My grandparents have a month-long visit with my family. This means they are staying in my bedroom while I share my sister Indi's room.“Isn't it fun that we get to be roommates?” said Indi on the first night.“It is fun,” I said, smiling.“Now how about turning off the light?” Since Indi is younger than me, her bedtime is earlier than mine,so what I really meant was“How about turning off the big light so you can go to sleep while I use my mini book light to read?”“Wait!” Indi said, putting a few toys up onto my bed.“They’ ll keep you company.” I smiled again.“Thank you! Now can we turn off the light?”“Wait!” Indi said.“Will you turn on the fan?”“We don't need a fan in October,” I said.“I always get hot,” she said. I climbed down from the top bunk(上铺) to turn on the fan,and then returned to bed.“Now it's time to sleep, OK?”“Wait!” said Indi.“Would you like to listen to The Adventures of Jeremy Owl?”“I don't want to listen to anything,” I said.“I want to read.”“Jeremy has an upside-down party, and you' ll never guess what happens.” Indi turned on her CD player. That night, between the fan, Jeremy Owl's upside-down adventures, and Indi's loud snoring(呼噜), I had a hard time paying attention to my book —— and an even harder time falling asleep. Sharing a room didn't get any easier during the day. My things kept getting mixed up, covered, and lost. My math book was missing for two days until I found it in Indi's box!“Indi! You can't just take my things like that!” I shouted.“Whoa!”said my mom, walking into the room.“What's going on?”“It's so hard to share a room with Indi!” I spoke. That night, we had a family meeting to come up with some ways:
▲ I do my nighttime reading in the living room and don't even go into Indi's room until she's already asleep.
▲ I try to imagine that the fan and Indi's snoring are peaceful sounds lulling(催人欲睡) me to sleep.
▲ Nobody is allowed to touch the other person's things without asking.
▲ We take turns to have the room all to ourselves.
Now and then, when my grandparents overhear me complaining(抱怨) about sharing a room, they remind me to think about how lucky we are for everything we have, and I realize they' re completely right!

A new survey shows that Generation Z (people aged 18-27) in the U. S. are most likely to leave a place(like a restaurant) without tipping when they get bad service. This challenges the old tipping rules.
The survey was done from September 20 to 23, 2024. It asked 1,000 Americans of different ages about their tipping habits and ideas on service workers’ wages(工资). It found that 74% of Gen Z said they would not tip if service was bad —— this is the highest rate among all age groups. For example, only55% of millennials (young adults a bit older than Gen Z), 57% of Generation X, and 46% of baby boomers (older people) would do the same.
Across the U. S., people are tipping less. In the second quarter of 2024, the average tip for sit-down restaurants dropped from 19.4%(in the first quarter) to 19.3%. Tips for fast food also fell from 16% to15.9%.
Etiquette expert Nick Leighton said people now feel“tipping fatigue”—— they see tipping requests everywhere, even in strange places (like gas stations or online clothing stores). So many people just don't want to tip anymore.
It's not surprising that young people refuse to tip for bad service. Another survey last year found that Gen Z have the worst tipping habits: only 35% said they always tip at sit-down restaurants. This number is much lower than other age groups. Leighton thinks tipping is still needed in some cases (like sit-down restaurants), but people are questioning more situations.
He said,“We should talk about whether tipping is the best way to pay service workers. Maybe we need a new system.”
The survey also found that 79% of all respondents (including Gen Z) think service workers should get higher wages instead of relying on tips. Only 10% like the current tipping system, and 11% are unsure.
( ) 31. What does the underlined phrase“tipping fatigue” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. People feel tired of being asked to tip too often.
B. People are excited to tip service workers.
C. People think tipping is a good way to show thanks.
D. People forget to tip in many places.
( ) 32. The sentence“This change may show that people are unhappy with the tipping culture.”should be put at the beginning of .
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5
( ) 33. What can we infer from the survey results?
A. Most Americans want to keep the current tipping system.
B. Gen Z are the only group that dislikes tipping.
C. Many people think service workers should get better fixed wages.
D. Tipping for fast food increased in 2024.
( ) 34. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to tip properly in the U. S. B. Why Gen Z in the U. S. are less likely to tip.
C. The best places to tip service workers. D. How service workers get high wages.

七、阅读表达 阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过6个单词。
Nowadays, people usually shake hands when they meet each other. Do the Chinese always greet others like this? In fact, handshaking was introduced to our country around 100 years ago. There were several kinds of greetings in ancient China. Among them the fist and palm salute(拱手礼) was a quite common one, with a history of about 3,000 years. It was first used by people in the Western Zhou Dynasty. In ancient times, if people met a stranger, their hands were always ready to hold something used for fighting. Holding out both hands could make people feel relaxed. When people meet, men usually use their left hand to hold the right one. It's believed that people considered the left as the important side for men in Chinese history. While for women, the important side is the right. So when they give the fist and palm salute, they should put their right hand on the top. When someone presents the fist and palm salute to you, you are supposed to do it back as well. In many wuxia or kungfu TV series and movies, people greet each other with the hold fist salute, or baoquan in Chinese. The gesture(手势) is that the right hand is made a fist, while the left hand is to cover the right fist. It's similar to the fist and palm salute, but they are different. Baoquan is widely used among kungfu masters and students. So, don't make a mistake.
61. When was handshaking introduced to China?
62. Who first used the fist and palm salute?
63. How would ancient people feel by holding out both hands?
64. Where is baoquan widely used?
65. What do you think of preserving ancient Chinese greetings?

Dear Robert,
I'm so glad to hear you' re coming to China! It's really smart of you to ask about our manners first, and I am going to share some helpful advice.
When it comes to visiting friends, you should arrive on time. Also, you can't go wrong with bringing a small gift. Remember to use nín to address others in a formal situation.
The rules in Chinese museums are similar to those in the UK. For example, you must keep quiet and never touch the artworks. You'd better not take photos of some artworks unless it is allowed.
When eating in restaurants, you should keep your voices down. Remember that we use chopsticks and usually don't leave tips here.
You should follow these rules to avoid unpleasant moments. I hope you will find my advice useful, and I'm looking forward to your wonderful trip in China!
Yours,
Lu Feng
