In the suburbs (郊区) around Beijing, firefighters are facing new challenges (挑战). Usually, their main work is to put out fires and help with all kinds of accidents. But now, they often have to deal with snakes that break into people’s homes. In July 2025, a fire station in Huairou received an emergency (突发事件) call about a large snake entering a farmer’s house. With special tools, a firefighting team safely caught the snake and moved it to a faraway wild area to protect both the snake and the family.
As Beijing’s environment gets better and better, there is more food for snakes, such as small animals and insects. Green places like parks and woods have increased a lot, giving snakes more comfortable places to live. At the same time, because of climate (气候) change, the warm seasons are becoming longer, so snakes can be active for a longer time. By July 2025, Huairou had reported 64 snake-related (相关的) calls—much more than the 55 calls in 2024.
Long ago, people in China feared snakes. An ancient story told that when a kind of snake touched plants, the plants would become dry and die. However, things are quite different today. Snakes are now considered an important part of nature that needs protection. This change in thinking is supported by a new law made by China in May 2023. When people see snakes now, they call professionals (专业人员) for help instead of killing them, and firefighters play an important role in keeping both people and snakes safe.
A firefighter named Niu Xiaoyu says, “Snakes help nature. They eat harmful insects to protect plants and also serve as food for many wild animals. Protecting snakes helps keep nature balanced (平衡).”
3. What new challenge do firefighters in Beijing’s suburbs face?
A. Putting out more big fires.
B. Building more green areas for snakes.

In recent years, short-form videos have become popular around the world. Compared with traditional long videos, short-form videos are much more convenient to watch—you can enjoy them anytime and anywhere with your smartphone, even when you have only a few minutes.
However, some Chinese researchers are worried about the bad influences of short-form videos on people’s health. They recently did a serious study on how short-form videos reshape our brains and even influence our genes (基因). The study found that watching these short videos for a long time can make our brains more active in the parts connected with reward (回报) and emotion (情绪) control. This change may lead to some biological and nervous system problems if we don’t control the watching time.
For the study, researchers chose 111 college students aged between 17 and 30 in daily life. It’s important to note that the study focused on the use of short-form video apps rather than general smartphone use. Researchers collected the students’ brain test data (数据) by using a special machine, hoping to find out how short videos influence the brain’s structure (结构) and activity.
The results of the study were surprising. The participants who were more addicted to short-form videos and hardly stopped watching them showed clear differences in brain work and structure compared with others. Some parts of their brain that are connected with decision-making, information processing and emotion control became larger. This makes them more sensitive (敏感的) to the quick rewards from watching one video after another, so it's much harder for them to stop. Besides, researchers found nearly 500 genes had something to do with this addiction. Interestingly, most of these genes work during teenage years, which means teenagers are more likely to get addicted to short-form videos during this period.
7. What is the advantage of short-form videos according to Paragraph 1?
A. Useful for work. B. Helpful for study. C. Convenient to watch.
8. Which group of people did the researchers choose for the study?
A. 111 college students aged 17-30.
B. 111 old people who love social media.
C. 111 middle school students aged 13-15.
9. What does the underlined word “addicted” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 上瘾的 B. 擅长的 C. 乐意的
10. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Teenagers should use short-form video apps correctly.
B. Short-form videos are the most popular among teenagers.
C. Short-form videos have bad influences on teenagers’ health.

Traditional Chinese painting is an important art form with a long history. Last year, I joined my school’s Chinese painting club to learn the ancient art, as I was always drawn to the beauty of bamboo and mountain paintings.
At first, I thought holding a brush and drawing bamboo would be easy. But I soon found it much more challenging than I expected. My lines were not good, sometimes too heavy, sometimes too light. The ink was either too thick or too thin, and the bamboo leaves looked messy. After failing to draw a satisfying piece for weeks, I felt discouraged and wanted to give up.
My teacher noticed my discouragement and talked to me kindly. She said every artist makes countless mistakes when starting out, and ancient painters spent years practicing basic skills. She also mentioned Emily, who stuck to learning Chinese calligraphy (书法) in the face of challenges and grew a lot from the experience. Her words encouraged me. I decided not to give up. I corrected my brush-holding posture (姿势) and practiced mixing ink carefully. Little by little, my lines became better, and I learned to control the ink well.
After half a year of hard work, my paintings improved greatly. At the school art show, my bamboo painting won the third prize. Standing in front of my work, I felt proud and excited. Through this experience, I realized that learning traditional painting isn’t easy. It requires patience, persistence (坚持) and the courage to face challenges. Challenges are not failures but stepping stones to progress. Just like Emily, we grow stronger and better when we overcome challenges.

C. Dealing with snakes that enter people’s homes.
4. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The stories about snakes in China.
B. The increase in snake-related calls.
C. The reasons for more snakes in Beijing.
5. How have people’s attitudes (态度) towards snakes changed?
A. happy → worried B. afraid → kind C. touched → angry
6. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Climate Change and Animals
B. Animals and Safety in Beijing
C. Firefighters and Snake Protection
