How to behave politely when crossing cultures
Different countries have different cultures and customs. We should learn to behave politely when communicating cross-culturally.
First, we must respect local customs and learn basic manners, such as proper greetings and table manners. Second, we should pay attention to our words and body language to avoid offending others.
When abroad, we’d better follow local people and act as they do.
By understanding and respecting cultural differences, we can communicate smoothly and make more international friends.
Just remember the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, keep friendly and we can get on well with local people.

Last year, I went to England with my parents. I was very excited because it was my first time going abroad. Before we left, my mom told me that people in England are very polite and pay much attention to table manners. I didn’t take it seriously and thought it was not a big deal.
One day, we went to a restaurant for dinner. I started eating as soon as the food was served, but my dad stopped me. He said that in England, people usually wait for everyone to get their food before eating. I felt a little embarrassed and stopped eating. A waiter passed by and smiled at me kindly. He told me that it’s common to follow table manners in England, and no one would laugh at me for making a mistake.
After dinner, we met a local boy named Tom. He was friendly and showed us around his neighborhood. He told us that different countries have different customs, and it’s important to respect them. Health is very important to everyone. Different people have their own ways to keep fit. A lot of people like running on the treadmills (跑步机). But it is not a good way to make you strong and healthy. Here are some reasons why you should run outdoors but not on the treadmills.
It costs you a lot of money to buy a treadmill. You can run outdoors, and it costs you nothing! Walk outside and the whole world is your treadmill. If you don’t mind getting a little dirty, outdoor activities will help you.
Treadmills can become boring. You are limited (被限制) to what’s in front of you. Running and exercising outside provides a beautiful scenery (风景). Studies show that just looking at photos of nature can lower blood pressure (降低血压), so imagine what running through it will do. The fresh air and the unpolluted nature will also make you run more easily.
You burn (燃烧) more calories running outside than you do on a treadmill, because you have to work harder in order to move your body. When you run on a treadmill, you only move your legs. But when exercising outside, you must move your legs and your hands and so on.
Why not go for a run outdoors? Come on!
66.What can’t running outside provide?
A.Clean water. B.The unpolluted nature. C.Fresh air. D.Beautiful scenery.
67.Which is RIGHT about the effect of running in nature according to the passage?

C.It can help reduce blood pressure. D.It’s less effective for burning calories.

A.The benefits of treadmills. B.The importance of outdoor running.
C.How to lower blood pressure. D.How to become stronger.

A.Culture and life. B.News and hot spots.

I felt sorry for not following table manners and decided to learn more about foreign cultures. From then on, I paid more attention to cultural differences and tried to understand them. This experience taught me that cross-cultural respect is the key to getting along with people from different countries. We should always keep an open mind and learn from each other’s cultures.

68.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The benefits of treadmills. B.The importance of outdoor running.
C.How to lower blood pressure. D.How to become stronger.
69.In which part of a newspaper can we read the passage?
A.Culture and life. B.News and hot spots.

I felt sorry for not following table manners and decided to learn more about foreign cultures. From then on, I paid more attention to cultural differences and tried to understand them.
Come on!
