Four shelters were opened to give safe places to live and basic things for about 500 people.

Early in May, a man took me to a new home at Birtwick Park. The owner gave me the name “Black Beauty”. There, I met my friend, another horse, Ginger. One day, my owner decided to visit some friends and his groom (马夫), James, drove him.
As evening fell, we stopped at a large hotel. The stableman, David, brought us into the stable (马厩) and two grooms looked after us. One groom, Towler, had a pipe (烟斗) in his mouth.
“Towler, get these horses something to eat. Put your pipe down first,” said David.
“All right”, said Towler.
At night, I felt uncomfortable and woke up. Ginger was coughing. It was dark, and I could see nothing. The stable was seriously on fire. It was full of smoke and hard to breathe. I was very afraid.
David came in and wanted to lead the horses out but they were in fear. Then he tried to pull me out, but I did not want to go. Finally, he left the stable alone.
“Black Beauty, come with me,” James ran to me and said. He always gave us hope. His voice made me relaxed. He put his scarf over my eyes and led me out of the stable. Then, he ran back inside. I shouted at him worriedly when I saw him go. Ginger told me later that she heard my voice and became brave enough to come out. Then I saw James coming out with Ginger.
The next morning, we felt sad when hearing that two horses died in the stable. Towler started the fire. The night before, a man saw him in the stable with a pipe in his mouth. At Birtwick Park, the rule was “no pipes in the stable” and it was a very good rule.

①We live in a stressful world. Daily life can sometimes make us feel tired or sad. Some people go to the doctor for help. Others try different ways. But the way to feel better might be in the kitchen.
②Dr. Paul Clayton, a food expert from Middlesex University, says, “The food and drinks you have can change how your brain (大脑) works, just like they change your body. Some foods have things in them that change how you think and feel.”
③For example, foods with a lot of carbohydrates (碳水化合物) can make us feel more relaxed and happy. Studies show that people who want to stay thin often feel a bit sad after two weeks because they are eating fewer carbohydrates.
④On the other hand, foods rich in protein (蛋白质) make us feel awake and ready to learn. Research shows that school kids eating high protein breakfasts do better in class than those with low protein meals. The right lunch also matters. It helps when you have an afternoon exam or important meeting that needs quick decisions.
⑤So far, we’ve seen how carbohydrates and proteins change how we feel. But food can help whole groups of people too. In Bournemouth in southern England, where there is a problem with late-night fights, some owners know how to solve it. They give their guests free chocolate at the end of the night. The results are amazing, with a 60% drop in fighting.

As the music began, a Sichuan Opera performer stepped onto the stage, walking, kicking and dancing to the music while quickly changing face masks. No one noticed anything unusual until the last mask was removed, and the audience realized that this performer was somewhat different.
Yin Qiuhua, the 19-year-old performer, was born with Down syndrome Her mother, Zhao Haiying, has been looking for treatment for her and teaching her life skills. Zhao said, “I can’t take care of her for her whole life. My biggest wish was to find a suitable skill for her so that she can make a living by herself.” They tried almost every training course. But Yin didn’t do well in any of them.
Things began to change in 2021, when Zhao met Lin Chun, a traditional Chinese opera teacher. Lin agreed to take Yin as an apprentice (徒弟) and teach her the face-changing art of Sichuan Opera.
Face-changing is hard for most people, and even harder for Yin with her learning challenges. Thanks to Lin’s kindness and encouragement, she kept going. During the first year, Yin practiced for up to eight hours a day. To encourage her and help with her training, Zhao stayed with her every day. After about 18 months of hard training, Yin gave her first performance at an event in Nanchong. The performance went very smoothly, and Qiuhua received a lot of applause (掌声). Her mother was so happy and moved to tears. Since then, Lin has received invitations, offering Yin the chance to share her talent on bigger stages.
Yin’s success has inspired (激励) other families across the country who have children with Down syndrome. Many have contacted Zhao, hoping to learn from her and Yin’s experiences. Zhao said, “ 4 ”

66.Why did Yin’s mother want her to learn a skill?
67.How did Yin succeed in her first performance?
68.What might Zhao say to other parents? Finish the ending. (about 30 words)
65.No, she didn’t. 66.Because she wanted her daughter to make a living by herself. 67.First, she trained very hard. Second, her teacher taught her with kindness and encouragement. Third, her mother always stayed with her to encourage her. 68.The most valuable advice is that we should not give up on our children. We should try our best to discover their shining points and encourage them to face the challenges.(答案不唯一,合理即可)
65.根据“They tried almost every training course. But Yin didn’t do well in any of them.” No, she didn’t.
66.根据“Zhao said, ‘I can’t take care of her for her whole life. My biggest wish was to find a suitable skill for her so that she can make a living by herself.’” Because she wanted her daughter to make a living by herself.
67.根据“Thanks to Lin’s kindness and encouragement, she kept going. During the first year, Yin practiced for up to eight hours a day. To encourage her and help with her training, Zhao stayed with her every day.” First, she trained very hard.
69.She cut a piece of birthday cake for me.
She ________ ________ a piece of birthday cake for me.
根据“She cut a piece of birthday cake for me.”
70.The students were discussing the problem when the teacher came in.
________ were the students ________ when the teacher came in?
What doing
根据“The students were discussing the problem when the teacher came in.” 故填What;doing。
71.If you don’t leave now, you will miss the last bus.
________ you ________ now, you will miss the last bus.
Unless leave
unless意为“除非”,相当于if…not。
Customs in different countries are quite ________ ________ each other.
【答案】 different from
73.fell, she, quickly, asleep, tired, because, was, she (.)
________________________________________
She fell asleep quickly because she was tired.
VIII.
Huang Xuhua, was a great scientist, passed away at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025. He was called the “Father of China’s Nuclear Submarine (核潜艇)”.
Born in 1926, he grew up when China faced many difficulties. This made him decide to study shipbuilding and use his skills to serve (服务) China.
In 1958, China began a top-secret project to build its first nuclear submarine. A nuclear submarine is a powerful underwater ship that can travel for months without coming up for air. At that time, only four countries had this technology. Huang Xuhua, then 32 years old, became the leader of this important project. To make it safe, he kept his work a secret for 30 years. Even his family didn’t know what he did.
During the design of the nuclear submarine, they met many difficulties. For example, designing a nuclear reactor (反应堆) was really hard. Without computers, they used abacus (算盘), and even toys to test their ideas! In cold winters, their hands froze while working, but they never stopped. Huang always encouraged his team, saying, “If others can do it, so can we!”
After 12 years of hard work, China’s first nuclear submarine, “Long March 1”, successfully sailed (航行) in 1970. This made China the fifth country in the world with this technology. Even at age 62, he joined a dangerous deep-sea test to improve submarines. He said, “If there’s danger, I should face it first!”
His love for China is as deep as the ocean. Today, his work still protects China’s seas. Like nuclear submarines moving silently underwater, great achievements often come from humble (谦逊的), hardworking people.
The Hero in My Eyes
Today I want to share my hero—“the Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines” with you.
Huang Xuhua was born in 1926. He decided to study shipbuilding because 74 . When he was 32, he became the leader to 75 . During the design of the nuclear submarine, he and his team met many difficulties, but they didn’t 76 . For example, they used simple abacus and toys to test their ideas. In 1970, “Long March 1” was successfully sailed, making China the fifth country in the world with this technology. Huang’s story taught us that 77 .
Let’s study hard and contribute (贡献) to our country like Huang did!
74.China faced many difficulties at that time 75.build China’s first nuclear submarine 76.give up/stop 77.great achievements come from humbleness and hard work
74.根据文章第二段“Born in 1926, he grew up when China faced many difficulties. This made him decide to study shipbuilding and use his skills to serve (服务) China.” China faced many difficulties at that time。
75.根据文章第三段“In 1958, China began a top-secret project to build its first nuclear submarine… Huang Xuhua, then 32 years old, became the leader of this important project.” 故填build China’s first nuclear submarine。
76.根据文章第四段“In cold winters, their hands froze while working, but they never stopped.” 故填give up/stop。
77.根据文章最后一段“Like nuclear submarines moving silently underwater, great achievements often come from humble, hardworking people.” 故填great achievements come from humbleness and hard work。

Dear teachers,

I’m an outgoing boy. I have many hobbies, especially reading. I have read a lot of classics on Chinese history, so I’m familiar with Chinese history and culture.
I have several qualities that make me suitable for this role. Firstly, I have a profound understanding of both Chinese and foreign cultures, so that I can confidently explain Chinese stories in English. Moreover, as a good organizer, I have successfully planned and organized several school events in the past. I ever joined in several activities like making posters about the Beijing Opera.
For the activities, my plans are as follows. Firstly, we can hold an English speech contest with the theme of sharing Chinese stories. It will help students learn more about traditional culture as well as improve English reading skills. California had bad wildfires in Southern California in January 2025. Strong winds and dry conditions caused the fires. They spread fast and changed quickly, putting many communities in danger. To protect people and their homes, Governor Gavin Newsom said that over 7,500 firefighters and emergency workers were sent to fight the fires.
The state government did a lot to help with the problem. Governor Newso made a special rule to support communities affected (影响) by the fires that are still happening. He also said the state was in a state of emergency to make rescue (营救) work faster. The government got help from the federal government to support the work of dealing with the fires, including support for fighting three big fires: the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades fires.
California used all the resources they had for the fight. Local fire departments, state offices, and federal teams worked closely together. Other states also gave help: Oregon sent 75 fire engines, Washington sent 45, and smaller numbers were sent from New Mexico, Utah, and Idaho. This brought hundreds more firefighters. Before the strong winds came, the state’s emergency office had already put 65 fire engines, 7 helicopters, and over 105 special workers in dangerous places. CAL FIRE, the state’s forest fire department, sent over 4,700 workers, 31 helicopters, and more than 1,000 fire engines. Four shelters were opened to give safe places to live and basic things for about 500 people.
“We are trying our best to protect our communities,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. For more information on staying safe during emergencies, people could visit the official web page: ready.ca.gov.

⑥Why does chocolate make people less angry? First, it makes your brain send out things that make you feel good. It also has a lot of sugar, which helps you feel strong and can stop late-night tiredness from turning into being upset. These things, along with its great taste, make chocolate able to turn a bad day into a good one!
56.What can we learn from the research about school kids’ breakfast?
A.Low-protein breakfast helps kids do better at school.
B.Kids should not have breakfast before going to school.
C.Breakfast has nothing to do with kids’ school performance.
D.Eating a high-protein breakfast helps kids do better in school.
57.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.chocolate can change people’s feelings.
B.Food can change how you feel and act.
C.Carbohydrates are more important than proteins.
D.People should see a doctor when they feel stressed.
58.What does the underlined “it” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.Chocolate. B.Protein. C.Carbohydrates. D.Breakfast.
59.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

A. B.
C. D.
