Back in 2016, Cho was busy making cookies for her online bakery, Yummyholic. She decorated cookies with faces for a friend’s birthday party. The cookies received attention on social media. Soon, others wanted her cookies, too.

A good sense of humor can make you the focus of a party. Maybe you want to be the fun one in your friend group, make your classmates laugh, or impress your new colleagues. No matter what your reasons are, you can become a funnier person by using different ways.
Tell funny stories. Sometimes, the funniest thing you can do is telling a funny story. Jokes are great, too, but your audience will likely find that something that actually happened to you will be a little more humorous. Think of a few funny things that have happened to you and tell those stories when you stumble across proper situations.
Watch comedies (喜剧). The more interesting things are around you, the funnier you’ll be in real life. When you get home from work or school each day, watch a few funny movies or TV shows. Pick something that’s sure to get you laughing. For instance, you might watch The Office or the movie Bridesmaids.
Spend more time with funny people. Do you have a colleague who you think is funny? Or maybe an aunt who keeps everyone laughing? Hang out with them sometimes? Ask your colleague out for a drink or go over to your aunt’s house to chat.
Practice telling jokes in the mirror. Practice makes perfect! While you’re developing your sense of humor, practice your jokes on yourself. Look in the mirror and notice how you deliver it and which parts are funny to you. Remember to keep your facial expression fun and positive.
Do something fun every day. You can choose to watch a funny movie that’s just released (上映) or play with your kids for an hour. Whatever you choose, sit back, relax and enjoy it.
23. What do the underlined words “stumble across” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Worry about. B. Come across. C. Take away. D. Turn down.
24. What effect may The Office have on you?
A. It may cause you to burst into laughter. B. It may help you to meet funny people.
C. It may lead you to perform comedies. D. It may make you dislike watching movies.

A. Reading stories before falling asleep. B. Watching movies with your children.
C. Playing hide-and-seek with your kids. D. Chatting with your colleagues and aunts.
26. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How to collect proper funny stories. B. How to look for more funny movies.
C. How to get along with humorous people. D. How to improve your sense of humour.

Imagine settling into your airplane seat, ready for a long flight, when suddenly you hear a loud deep voice singing a song. Passengers on a flight experienced this surprise. A flight attendant(乘务员)belted out a song to the passengers, who had no access to the in-flight entertainment system.
In the age of social media, it was not a surprise that passengers could record this incident. A video shared on social media shows the reactions of two women, who were fascinated by the performance. One of them, an Australian tourist, Ashleigh, wrote on the video sharing site of her unusual flight: “I’ve never been so confused and so happy at once.” She did recommend that the flight attendant start carrying a karaoke machine with him for better sound quality.
Detailing the magic of the performance, a website shared that “A few brave souls sang along, while others clapped and swung to the music. It turned strangers into a temporary musical family, all connected by the magic of music.” Towards the end of the song, the flight attendant asked more passengers to join the party by waving their hands and showing their appreciation. And apparently, the passengers had broad smiles on their faces.
It seems that the audience treated to this unusual song were pleased. While acknowledging this man’s daring, most of them remained positive. “He has no business performing to anybody, but at the same time I love him,” wrote one. An online poll(调查)shows that 68 percent of readers would like a flight attendant to sing or play music to them in a similar fashion.
And their wish may be coming true. It was reported that as the story made the headlines, airlines worldwide were inspired to bring a touch of music to their own flights, planning live performances or karaoke sessions to reduce the monotony(单调乏味)of long journeys.
27. What does the Australian tourist advise the flight attendant to do?
A. Control his emotions. B. Improve the sound ability.
C. Avoid disturbing passengers. D. Consider the safety of passengers.
28. Which word best describes the flight attendant’s behavior?
A. Confusing. B. Respectful. C. Attractive. D. Embarrassing.
29. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Enjoyable ways to travel by air. B. Different thoughts about music.
C. The popular music on the Internet. D. The public’s response to the incident.
30. What effect does this singing incident have?
A. Airlines will make more headlines.
B. Airlines will shorten the travel time.
C. Airlines will meet all needs of passengers.
D. Airlines will add amusements to their flights.

Many people love sports. Whether we are participants or viewers, sporting events have a way of bringing us together, especially during times of unrest and uncertainty. An exhibit at the National Archives Museum in Washington, D.C. proves how sports help shape our culture and our collective identity. It’s called “All American: The Power of Sports”.
The exhibit features more than 75 items. It includes four sections: “The Power to Unite”, “The Power to Teach”, “The Power to Break Barriers” and “The Power to Promote”. Visitors can see original sports sweaters, equipment, letters, and gifts given to US Presidents by star athletes.
“Many of the stories, legends, and heroes that are a part of American culture are from sports,” Alice Kamps, the exhibit’s leader, said. “There are many traditions we share, like watching a football game on a public holiday.”
Although competitive sports have helped to unite Americans, many sports once had limited opportunities for women and people of color. In the exhibit, handwritten letters by Jackie Robinson, who helped integrate (融入群体) Major League Baseball, prove the influence he had. “These letters were important,” Kamps said, “because Robinson wanted to use the power of his platform to advocate for what he always believed in: That all people are equal. He pushed for equal treatment, justice, and representation in government.”
Robinson faced threats as the first Black athlete to play in a Major League game, but he persevered (坚持不懈) and inspired others to fight for racial equality. He became a leading figure during the civil rights movement.
Visitors to the exhibit will see the power that important athletes have always had when addressing injustice. “Sports are so popular and universally loved,” Kamps said. “These individuals became really famous and had the ability to speak to a large group of people. They got the message out in a way that other people couldn’t.”
31. What can we learn about the exhibit from the first paragraph?
A. It proves the power of sports. B. It shapes the American culture.
C. It shows the popularity of sports. D. It brings all the Americans together.
32. Why did Robinson write those letters?
A. To show respect to his fans. B. To gain support from more people.
C. To respond to threats against him. D. To promote equality for everybody.
33. What can we infer from Kamps’ words in the last paragraph?
A. Athletes should fight against injustice.
B. Important athletes attract more visitors.
C. Famous athletes have a great influence.
D. All people have the right to go in for sports.
34. What is the text mainly about?
A. A battle for human rights. B. The uniting power of sports.
C. The important role of athletes. D. A major part of American culture.

The heat island effect, also referred to as the urban heat island effect, is a situation where the average temperature of an area is higher than nearby rural areas. It’s mostly caused by the fact that the building materials in urban areas, like concrete and asphalt, absorb a lot of sunlight and store it in large thermal (热量的) masses. A secondary cause is waste heat caused by large uses of energy.
There are a number of small factors that contribute to the heat island effect, and when combined, they increase average temperatures substantially. The difference in urban temperatures over regional averages is seen most obviously at night, and especially during the winter. One of the main causes of the increased temperature is that in an urban environment large buildings block out a great deal of the sky, which at night is much cooler than the ground, and so heat does not dissipate (消散) as rapidly as it does in rural areas with no large buildings.
The heat has an effect not only on the city itself, but also on nearby areas downwind, which generally causes between 10% and 30% more annual rainfall than areas upwind. Additionally, there are significant health risks associated with the heat island, and depending on the region, death rates during heat waves can be obviously increased in urban areas as a result. Although there are only around 1,000 deaths each year in the United States from extreme heat, most of these are thought to be due to the increased temperatures of urban environments.
Perhaps even more dramatic is the financial cost of the heat island effect. Higher temperatures during summer mean increased electricity costs to power air conditioning to keep cool. The city of Los Angeles estimates that an extra $100 million is spent each year on climate control due to this phenomenon. As a result, a number of new cooling programs have been suggested, both to lower annual costs and to improve standard of living.
35. Which of the following may be one of the main reasons for the heat island effect?
A. Trees. B. Concrete. C. Sunlight. D. Wood.
36. What can be inferred about urban areas?
A. The plan of urban buildings affects heat dissipation.
B. Urban areas have more green plants for heat dissipation.
C. The heat island effect has little impact on urban temperature.
D. Urban areas have a smaller day-night temperature difference.
37. What may the heat island effect cause?
A. Less rainfall. B. Climate change. C. Mental problems. D. Natural disasters.
38. What would the author probably discuss in the next part?
A. Financial costs of some cities. B. New programs to lower death rates.
C. Ways to deal with the heat island effect. D. Higher temperatures during summer.

Listening to music after surgery (外科手术) seems to ease a patient’s pain and anxiety, which could be a cheap and easy way to reduce painkiller (止痛药) use. Research has repeatedly shown that music can be calming. ____39____ The team studied how listening to music immediately after surgery affected people’s pain, anxiety, heart rate and painkiller use.
Each study involved about 100 people. ____40____ The studies varied in how long the participants did this, ranging from half an hour until they were discharged. The remaining participants — who were matched to the former group for age, sex and surgery type — didn’t listen to music after their surgery.
Frezza’s team found that music seemed to reduce pain levels by about 20 percent on average. Those who listened to music also required less than half as much morphine while in hospital as those who did not.
____41____ It lowered heart rates by around 4.5 beats per minute on average, and reduced self-reported anxiety levels by about 2.5 points, also on a scale of 20 to 80.
Music shifts our focus away from pain and makes us feel good. ____42____ This could be a cheap and easy way for hospitals to help patients recover after surgery. Future research should include larger studies. In these studies, people who are having the same sort of surgery at around the same time are randomly allocated (分配) to listen to music or not after the surgery. ____43____
A. They feel pain of the surgery.
B. This would give a more reliable result.
C. Half of them were asked to listen to music after surgery.
D. And it can also draw our attention away from anxious thoughts.
E. Listening to music after surgery seems to be an effective painkiller.
F. The team also found that listening to music seemed to reduce anxiety.
G. So Frezza and his team members investigated if it might help after an operation.

【答案】27. B 28. C 29. D 30. D

【答案】35. B 36. A 37. B 38. C
