In the Western Desert of Egypt lies a small town. There are large areas of date palms (椰枣树) and clear salt lakes. This wonderful oasis is Siwa, a world-famous tourist attraction in Egypt.
Salt plays an important role in the development of Siwa. Many years ago, people started to mine (开采) salt and made money by selling salt. And this created a lot of beautiful salt lakes. Thousands of tourists come here to have fun every year. Bottled salt and things like rock salt lamps are very popular among tourists, but the salt lakes get the most attention. People can float (漂浮) in the water freely because of the super salty water.
The salt lakes in Siwa look beautiful, and floating in them sounds fantastic. But remember to bring rubber slippers (橡胶拖鞋) because salt is bad for common shoes. Besides, you’d better not stay in the water for more than 25 minutes.
▲ The saltwater here is not good for drinking or farming. So people can only grow plants such as date palms. Local people have to use the salty soil (土) to build houses. When it rains, the salt in the soil starts to dissolve (溶解) . Over time, this could cause the houses to fall down.
Salt is both a gift and a problem for Siwa. Local people live in peace with this special land and keep protecting this amazing desert oasis.

A. A dry and hot place with no water or plants. B. A cold area with snow and ice all year round.

B. Reasons why Siwa’s salt lakes are popular.

25. What does the underlined word “oasis” probably mean?
A. A dry and hot place with no water or plants. B. A cold area with snow and ice all year round.
C. A green place in a desert with water and trees. D. A busy place with lots of tall buildings and shops.
26. How do the salt lakes benefit Siwa?
A. By attracting travellers. B. By offering colourful rocks.
C. By watering lots of trees. D. By improving the environment.
27. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The best time to visit Siwa’s salt lakes.
B. Reasons why Siwa’s salt lakes are popular.
C. The interesting experience in Siwa’s salt lakes.
D. Suggestions for having fun in Siwa’s salt lakes.
28. Which of the following can we put in “ ▲ ”?
