In 1999,Giuliana Furci, founder and founding director of the Fungi (Foundation,
developed a deep interest in fungi. They were everywhere, and the 20-year-old took particular joy in
the variety of mushrooms:small and button-shaped;tall and umbrella-like;round with red caps
topped with white flakes. Some were commonly found in people's diets, for they were rich in
nutrients such as vitamin, fiber, minerals and protein.
But Furci also quickly realized that these fungi went largely ignored in Chile, where there were
few guidebooks and an almost total lack of policies and resources to protect them from over-
harvesting and other human activities.Determined to correct this,Furci wrote a field guide and set
up the Fungi Foundation-a nouprofit dedicated to fungi conservation. In her guide, special
attention went to the role of fungi in the ecosyslem.
"Life on the planet wouldn't exist without fungi,"said Greg Mueller,a mushroom conservation
expert."Because of their relationship with forests and trees,we can't survive without fungi. In
tems of the health of the planet, they're incredibly important to humans and the overall ecosystem.
Fungi can break down plants and animals, thus cycling nutrients and increasing their availability in
the soil. They are also important contributors to the soil carbon stock through the same process.
What's more, fungi have been found to help degrade (various pollutants, such as plastic.
And mycelium(菌丝体),which is the rool structure of mushrooms,is now being used to replace
unsustainable materials, such as plastic and animal-based products.
Because of these, exploration of fungi was expanded at a faster pace. However, some were
already listed as critically endangered. In 2010,Furci took an even bigger step-with other
environmental nonprofits, she put forward a proposal for the goverment to systematically assess how
large new developments such as housing, dams, and highways affect fungi. In 2012,a law was
passed and Chile became the first country in the world to protect fungi by law:
24.Why did Furci establish the Fungi Foundation?
A.To draw altention to fungi conservation.
B.To promote the consumption of edible fungi.

The sound of a guitar is the warm yellow of honey and Monday is pink. These sensations are
always the same,and always present.This is called synaesthesia-一a neurological(神经的)
condition where senses are interconnected.
Synaesthesia causes an estimaled 4.4%of people to "see"sounds or "feel"the colors of
letters.Scientists have found that this unique way of perceiving the world can be a powerful tool for
leaming a foreign language.
Research led by Julia Simmer at the University of Sussex indicates that children with
synaesthesia often have better skills in several key areas."Specifically, they were significantly
better in vocabulary,short-tern memory,and attention to delail,"Simner says."These
synaesthesia-linked skuls predict that second-language leaming could be easier."For a synaesthete,
every letter has its own color, which makes letters and words much more unique and memorable.
When they learn a new language, the brain can use these color connections from their first language
to help remember new words. It's as if the color gives the bruin an extru piece of information to hold
onto, making the leaming process more effective.
However, psychologist Lucie Bouvet notes that for a small number of people, synaesthesia can
sometimes make communication barder. This is the experience of a woman identified as VA.Every
time VA hears a sound like "k",she would immediately see the color red. Before understanding the
meaning of a word, her bruin has to first process its sound and then its color. This extra step of
mental translation could sometimes cause her to lose truck of a conversation, showing that
synaesthesia's effects can be complex.
Despite these potential challenges, the key value of studying synnesthesia lies in its ability to
help us understand the mysteries of the human brain and language. For me,living with these
inlerconnected senses brings joy.It serves as a beautiful reminder that every brain experiences the
wodld in its own unique way.
28.What do we know about synnesthesin?
A.It's a language learning strategy.
B.It's a unique way the bruin works.
C.It's an evaluation method.
D.It's a psychological disorder.
29.How does synaesthesia aid language leaming according to Julia Simner's research?
A.By making better predictions.
B.By developing painting skills.
C.By improving the first Innguage.
D.By providing sensory connections.

Rice's whales are among the word's rurest sca mammals, with only about 50 sunviving off
Florida. How did scientists miss them-and how can we save them now?
It's not often that scientists discover a new species of mammal, let alone one thnt reaches 40
feet in length, weighs up to 30 tons, and often appears near coastal areas where many people live.
But that's what happened in 2021 when scientists announced a new species:Rice's whale, wrongly
thought to be a subspecies(亚种)of Bryde's whale in the past.
The exciting news was accompanied by a much sadder announcement, however:the filter-feeding
(whales, often called the Gulf of Mexico whale because of their home base just south of the
Florida coastal area,are endangered.Only 51 whales remain,according to researchers'best estimales.
With their main habitat in the middle of a busy ship route,Rice's whales face constant danger
from ship crashes, military training activities, oil and gas digging, and pollution. The Gulf oil spill
in 2010 polluted almost half of the whales'habitat, killed an estimated 17 percent of the remaining
population, sickened another 18 percent, and left almost a quarter of females with reproductive
殖)problems.
With the clock ticking, scientists have launched a series of research projects to study the species
more closely.For example,a recent study,published in January,used the whales'unique calls to track
their movements, finding that the whales travel outside their main runge,as far west as the coast of
Texns."It was exciting to discover that they still regularly occur in the northwestem Gulf of Mexico,"
says study leader Melissa Soldevilla,a biologist for NOAA."Historic records suggest that they once lived
across more of the Gulf, but no whales had been seen beyond the main habitat since the 1990s.
Tracking the whales'locations is necessary to decide their critical habital under the Endangered
Specics Act."Once we understand where and when the whales occur,we can determine where they share
space with human activities that may harm them,"Soldevilla suys."This helps us identify and develop
managemeat and protection actions to reduce the threal and improve their chances of sunvival."
32.What do we leamn about the discovery of Rice's whale?
A.The species was originally found in the Atlantic Ocean.
B.It used to be mistaken for a subspecies of Bryde's whale.
C.Its populatioo was stable before being listed as endangered.
D.Scientists previously ignored its existence due to its small size.
33.How did the 2010 Galf oil spill affect Rice's whale?
A.It made ship strikes on whales more frequent.
B.It increased military training in their habitat.
C.It resulted in trouble with male wale growth.
D.It caused about 17%to die and made 18%sick.
34.What does Melissa say about Rice's whales?
A.Their movements are protected by scientists.
B.They find new homes out of Mexico Gulf.
C.Their range is showing signs of expansion.
D.They always stay in a small area of the Gulf.
35.What is the purpose of tracking Rice's whales'locations?
A.To map their habitats needing protection.

Every day,we face a series of opportunities to do the right thing.Sometimes we seize()those
moments;other times,we don't.36 And what drives some people to tnke the moral high ground?
Jessie Sun interviewed 952 pcople about the motivations (for moral behavior and the
changes they wished to make in their lives in order to become more morally good.
When we think about morals,we often think about making“personal sacrifices(牺牲)”for the
greater good.In Sun's study, she found that nearly half of the participants said they were most
encouraged to become more moral for themselves.37 And fewer participants said that they most
wanted to benefit friends and people in general.
Moreover, many people believe that acting more morally-for example, being more thoughtful,
more open-mioded-would increase their own well-being.The more they believed that their moral
change would have positive results for themselves, the more they reported being encouraged to make
that change.38 That was the most surprising finding in the study.
39 Interestingly, participants generally expected possible harms to themselves and others if
they were hopest. You can imagine that some people regularly tell white lies to save other people's
feclngs, and they believe it would be hurtful if they were honest.
Researchers also asked people about the things they'd like to improve about themselves. If
they're extremely shy, they usually want to become more comfortable in social situations. But if they
aren't especially honest or thoughtful, they usually won't improve those aspects of their lives on
purpose.40
A.How can we become more morul?
B.So,why do we make these choices?
C.Being moral just isn't what most people consider first.
