Many people worry too much about things that might happen or think back again and again about what they did before. This is what we call “overthinking (精神内耗)”. In fact, the longer you think about something, the more tired and stressed you may be. But can we do something to stop overthinking?
Ethan, a 35-year-old salesman, often found himself staying awake at night, replaying a talk with his boss in his mind. “Am I right? Is there anything wrong with the talk?” The more he thought about it, the worse he felt. One night in bed, he noticed that his body was under great stress and it was hard for him to breathe. He decided to get out of bed and started doing simple exercise. After a few minutes, he felt less nervous. Then he kept his mind on his body, and stopped worrying too much about his mistakes. As he exercised more, he felt greatly relaxed.
Next time you start worrying too much or getting nervous, try to put your mind on your body instead. You may go for a walk or do push-ups until you are sweating (出汗). Holding something cold or warm can also help you feel better quickly. “4-7-8 breathing” is another useful method. That is to spend four seconds taking a deep breath, hold it for seven seconds and then breathe out for eight seconds. Soon, you’ll find your mind is peaceful again.
4. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By listing numbers. B. By asking a question. C. By giving examples.
5. Which of the following shows the right order of Ethan’s experience that night?
A. ②①③ B. ①②③ C. ②③①
6. What does the underlined word “method” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Way. B. Sport. C. Notice.
7. What do all the examples in the last paragraph have in common?
A. They get us to sweat a lot.
B. They make us physically strong.
C. They help us put troubles behind us.
C
Last month, my cousin Leo moved in with my family. It was his first time living away from home, and he was excited to learn to manage things by himself.
One sunny afternoon, we decided to walk to the park. On the way, we saw a cute dog. Leo, who loves animals, immediately went to pet it. Suddenly, the dog became nervous. It barked loudly and bit Leo on the arm before he could move away!
“It’s bleeding! What do we do?” Leo cried out in pain, and his face was pale. Seeing his fear got me out of my panic. I took a deep breath, and the first aid and safety lessons from school came back to me. “Stay calm! I know what to do,” I said, trying to sound confident.
We found a nearby public restroom. I held Leo’s arm under the running water and washed the wound with soap for five minutes. Next, I used a clean cloth from my bag, pressing it firmly against the wound until the bleeding slowed. Then, I covered it with a bandage.
At the hospital, the doctor gave Leo a tetanus shot (破伤风疫苗) and a rabies vaccination (狂犬病疫苗). He praised us, saying, “You did the right thing by cleaning the wound thoroughly.”
This accident was a valuable lesson. Safety is important, and we must always think before we act. Knowing first aid is powerful—it turns panic into courage. Now, we both understand that safety must always come first.
8. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Where the dog bite happened.
B. What the doctor gave Leo at the hospital.
C. The name of the dog’s owner.
9. Which of the following is the right order of the first aid steps taken?
a. Covering the wound with a bandage.
b. Washing the wound with running water and soap.
c. Pressing a clean cloth on the wound.
d. Going to the hospital for professional treatment.
A. b→c→a→d B. c→b→a→d C. a→b→c→d
10. What is the meaning of the underlined word “thoroughly”?
A. Quickly. B. Carefully. C. Happily.
11. Where is this passage most likely to be found?
A. In a first-aid guide. B. In a pet care guide. C. In an accident report.
D
Deserts are usually known for being very hot, dry, and hard to live in. However, the Badain Jaran Desert is different. There’s a strong connection between local people and the natural environment there.

The local government is trying to get tourists to come while also protecting the environment. This plan has worked well, and tourists are paying more and more attention to protecting the environment. All waste is carefully collected and dealt with in the town. There is a strong promise to take care of the environment in the desert.
12. What is special about the Badain Jaran Desert compared to other deserts?
A. It has the most camels.
B. It has a strong connection between local people and the natural environment.
C. It is the hottest desert.
13. How did Saihan travel across the desert when he was little?

14. Which of the following can be put in the “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4?
A. More and more tourists come to the desert to ride camels.
B. The local people are so kind that more tourists come to the desert.
C. The better travel conditions have allowed more tourists to visit the desert.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Animals and Humans in the Badain Jaran Desert

Why do Chinese players always win the first prize in the main table tennis events? Thomas J. Scheuer from the US studies at Tsinghua University. He is also a table tennis player. China has many talented table tennis players who train really hard. Scheuer also heard that another reason is that there are a large number of ping pong fans for the sport in China. Almost everyone can play a little. To see whether it’s true, he went to a park and visited a club to find out. The active scene surprised him.
At a park in Beijing, Scheuer saw many old people playing table tennis. A man said that he had been playing the sport for more than 50 years. He plays for two hours every day. He was even named one of the “Beijing Masters” when he was 70. “I’ve noticed that I’m the youngest player here in the park,” said Scheuer. Then Scheuer visited a table tennis club. There, many kids were practicing. A boy said he hoped that he could be an excellent player like Ma Long one day.
The visit made Scheuer truly admire (钦佩) the great interest that Chinese people have in table tennis. As China’s national sport, table tennis is as popular as soccer and basketball here. Scheuer was also impressed (印象深刻的) to find that Chinese people of all age groups take part in the sport not just to win, but also to have fun, to make friends, and to have a healthy lifestyle. Such a spirit touched him.
