Shells, coins and paper money are money in different forms. Some types of money are still being used for trading today.
Seashells
People think the first form of money was seashells. Shells were used about 3,000 years ago in some East Asian countries, like China and some countries in Africa. Shells were considered a good choice because they were easy to carry, similar in size and lasted a long time.

Six centuries later (in the 1600s), banks in Europe started to give out paper money. Paper money became common in almost all currencies, and it is still widely used.

Every month, Julia and her cousins visited their grandparents for a big family meal. Each time, their grandpa gave them some coins, and the kids would rush to buy sweets. One day, grandpa gathered them and said, “Let’s have a competition: manage your money smartly this year, and tell me how you’ve used it at the end of the year.”
Ruben and Nico, the two smallest kids, continued spending their money all on sweets. Every time, they would show off their sweets in front of the other children. This made Clara and Joe so angry that these two could no longer keep saving their money. They soon joined Ruben and Nico. Monty, a smart boy, tried to make money by buying and selling things. He made a lot of money quickly, but he spent it all on expensive things for himself, ending up with no money left months later. Alex saved every coin he got, and by the end of the year, he had more money than anyone else—he seemed like the clear winner.
But Julia had no coins left on the competition day. She offered a poor street violinist all the coins for his violin lessons. Although it wasn’t much money, on seeing Julia’s excitement, the violinist agreed, and even gave her a violin later. They played together in the park, and Julia finally bought her own violin, doing better and better in the violin playing.

Plants are more than just pretty to look at. They give us fruits, vegetables and food we eat. Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building things. But do you know that plants can do something even more amazing? They can make our homes, schools and workplaces much healthier.
We spend a large part of our days indoors. Unluckily, the air inside buildings can often be full of chemicals from many things around us. This poor air quality (质量) can make us feel sick, causing sore eyes and throats, and even making it hard for us to breathe (呼吸).
The good news is that plants are like nature’s little superheroes. They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and breathe out oxygen (O₂) which we humans need to live. They add moisture (水分) to the air and help us breathe better when it’s dry.
But the most amazing thing plants can do is to clean the air. Scientists found that plants can take in harmful chemicals, making the air around us safer to breathe. They set up a closed building called “bio-home” for experiments. Before they added plants, the air inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe. But after they added plants, the air got much cleaner and it became easier to breathe. To make the air inside even better, the scientists used different kinds of plants. After a while, the building wasn’t a “sick building” any more. People could go inside without feeling unwell.
So you see, plants are fantastic! They are not only beautiful to look at, but also provide us with food, help create materials and play an important role in keeping us healthy. They make our indoor environment cleaner and healthier, making us feel better. Next time you see a plant, remember all the amazing things it can do for us!
36. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. People spend little time staying indoors. B. Indoor air pollution is harmful to health.
C. Outdoor air is much worse than indoor air. D. Old buildings have better air quality.
37. Which is a way for plants to improve the air inside buildings?
A. They produce oxygen. B. They breathe out carbon dioxide.
C. They make the air dry. D. They give out harmful chemicals.
38. Why does the writer mention the “bio-home” experiment?
A. To show that plants can make indoor air cleaner.
B. To prove that closed buildings are bad for people’s health.
C. To explain how to grow different kinds of plants indoor.
D. To compare the air quality in different buildings.
39. Which picture shows the change in air quality in the passage’s experiment?
A. B. C. D.
40. What does the writer think of keeping plants indoors?
A. Useless. B. Harmful. C. Meaningful. D. Uncertain.
D
Maybe you’ll meet a word that you don’t know in an exam. Most students may be nervous if a dictionary is not around them. Here are some ways to help you guess the meaning of a word without a dictionary.
◆Reread the whole sentence. Your first step is to go back and reread the whole sentence. You may forget what you are reading when you meet a new word. Then try to think about the content (内容) of the sentence.
◆Try guessing the meaning from the context. You can often use other words in the sentence to help you find out the meaning of the unknown word.
◆Think about what else is happening in the sentence. For example, maybe you are looking at a sentence that says, “It was a very sultry day in the middle of the summer.” You may understand each word but “sultry”. Think about what you know about summer. Maybe “sultry” has something to do with the weather. It can help you understand the word easily.
In a word, don’t be afraid of new words. Try your best to understand them by using these ways. Then you can also understand the sentence or passage better.
41. What should you do first to guess the meaning of a new word?
A. Ask others for help. B. Reread the whole sentence.
C. Look it up in a dictionary. D. Guess its meaning through other words.
42. If a student meets a new word “gloomy” while reading, what does the text suggest he should do?
A. Read, spell and write the new word many times.
B. Stop reading and look for a dictionary at once.
C. Guess its meaning by combining the context.
D. Ignore it and continue reading without thinking.
43. What can we learn from the text?
A. Rereading sentences helps understand new words.
B. Most students will fail exams with unknown words.
C. Guessing words is more difficult than looking them up.
D. Students should give up reading when meeting new words.
44. How does the writer support his main idea in the text?
A. By telling a long personal story. B. By showing students’ test results.
C. By arguing with students’ opinions. D. By listing methods and giving examples.
45. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Some Good Ways of Using a Dictionary
B. How to Learn English as Well as Possible
C. Some Good Ways of Remembering New Words
D. How to Understand a Word without a Dictionary
