My adventure with pottery began unexpectedly online. I saw a video of a person making a late-night snack, but what truly caught my eye was the plate — a beautifully simple, cream-colored piece with a unique bubbled shape. I had never seen anything like it and immediately wanted one, I imagined all the meals I could present on it and how lovely they would look.
However, it was quite expensive. I couldn’t justify the purchase, so a bold idea struck me: Why not make it myself? I admitted this was a little unreasonable. My only experience with clay was from a brief encounter in elementary school. Yet, driven by the desire for that unique plate and then a wish to learn something new, I signed up for a pottery class last April.
I entered the first class confidently, but reality soon hit. In the beginning, handling clay — which seemed so simple — was much harder for me, a rather carefree girl, than I had anticipated. My posture was wrong; I failed to center the clay on the wheel; I even couldn’t control its speed properly. Once, I spun the wheel too fast and made my piece flying across the room. I felt embarrassed and thought about quitting right then.
However, I was not the one to give up easily. I continued attending class. By the third session, a shift occurred. I concentrated on steadying my elbows, gently applying pressure to the clay, and slowly pulling up the walls to form a bowl. The quiet rhythmic sound of the spinning wheel had a calming effect. To my surprise, by the end of that class, I had created my first real piece — a small, imperfect, yet completely handmade bowl.
That semester taught me more than pottery; it taught me perseverance, and how to find beauty in imperfection. I left with several bowls and a vase. The bubble-shaped plate remained my goal in my next round of classes. This journey reminded me that true value lies not in a perfect product, but in the rewarding process of creating something with my own hands.
4. What was the author’s initial intention of making a piece of pottery?
A. To learn a new skill. B. To join a pottery class.
C. To have a special plate. D. To decorate a perfect room.
5. Why did the author almost give up pottery making?
A. She found it too tiring. B. She was rather careless.
C. She lacked the proper instruction. D. She struggled with the basic techniques.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Daring and modest. B. Cautious and sensitive.
C. Determined and patient. D. Curious and considerate.
7. What does the author learn from her pottery experience?
A. Well begun is half done. B. The journey is the reward.
C. Perfection is the enemy of progress. D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
C
For a long period, many parents have assumed that additional mathematics exercises and an increased number of after-school classes represent the most reliable route to improving a child’s prospects. More recently, however, a research team at the University of Melbourne has directed attention to a different type of educational experience: sustained participation in school-based arts programmes. Their ten-year longitudinal study indicates that regular engagement in the arts is associated with enhanced emotional well-being, greater social confidence and higher levels of engagement with academic work.
The researchers tracked nearly 8,500 students from Grade 3 through Grade 12. At two-year intervals, the students reported the frequency with which they joined school bands, took part in theatrical performances, contributed to designing stage sets or posters, or attended art clubs after school. At the same time, teachers systematically documented observable changes in classroom behaviour, including whether students completed homework on time, participated in group discussions or displayed disruptive conduct during lessons.
When the team compared students from broadly similar family backgrounds, a consistent pattern emerged. Those who participated in arts activities at least once a week were, on average, less anxious and more optimistic about their future than peers who rarely took part. Students in the arts-participation group were also more likely to remain in school through to graduation and to report that “school is a place where I belong.”
The researchers then sought to explore potential mechanisms underlying these outcomes. Interviews with students pointed to several contributory factors. Rehearsing (排练) for a concert or a play, for instance, required them to manage their time carefully, attend to the views of others and tolerate feedback in the presence of their peers. Some quieter students reported discovering that they could communicate strong emotions through a role on stage or through the use of colour and form on a canvas (画布).
The study stops short of presenting arts education as a simple guarantee of success. Even so, the authors contend that when schools reduce provision in music or art in order to create additional time for test preparation, they may unintentionally remove one of the few environments in which certain students feel recognised and valued. On this basis, the researchers recommend that schools maintain a basic level of arts provision, particularly in communities experiencing economic pressure.
8. What can be inferred about school arts activities?
A. It leads to higher marks in school subjects.
B. It gives students a stronger sense of belonging.
C. It takes the place of academic support after class.
D. It is designed for students from well-off families.
9. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Arts education has limited value in exam-driven systems.
B. Test practice changes when schools increase arts activities.
C. Parents are the force behind the reduction of arts programmes.
D. Cutting arts provision has side effects that are easy to overlook.
10. What does the author mainly do in Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Present a research project and its implications.
B. Compare different types of after-school classes.
C. Highlight a viewpoint with various after-school activities.
D. Challenge a common belief through interviews with students.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How school arts education aids students’ development.
B. How exam pressure changes parents’ assumptions for education.
C. How students gradually lose their motivation for communication.
D. How researchers record and assess students’ after-school behaviours.
D
Polymetallic nodules (多金属结核) on the deep-ocean seafloor contain minerals like cobalt and nickel, which mining companies hope to harvest for green-energy batteries and technologies. However, a recent study suggests these prized, potato-sized rocks may also serve as a source of oxygen for the bacteria and other microorganisms living there.
Jeffrey Marlow, one of the authors of the study, said researchers planted some watertight (不透水的) structures on the ocean floor, which he described as overturned boxes equipped with instruments designed to measure the properties and composition of living things and their probable usage of oxygen. Researchers measured the oxygen loss over a 48-hour period while the structure was sealed on the seafloor. Typically, a decline in oxygen is an indicator for biological abundance because breathing organisms consume it. Yet, contrary to all expectations, they observed a rise in oxygen levels, a finding that directly challenged conventional understanding.
But not everyone is on the same wavelength as him. Canada’s The Metals Co. stated the study had been rejected by four scientific publications until finding a home at Nature, which the company labeled as “a journal that has long championed the preservation of deep-sea minerals”. TMC also said the method was wrong, arguing the team’s findings contradicted other work that had been conducted in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone. “The heightened oxygen levels are in fact incorrect in the data, and we are currently preparing a peer-reviewed paper as a fightback,” said the company.
Bo Barker, a microbiologist at Denmark’s Aarhus University, said the study invited more questions than it did answers. He described it as “a novel but very confusing process for which the mechanism is still not clear”.
For years, companies such as Canada’s TMC have been battling to persuade the international governing authority to green-light their plans to obtain these rocks in the Pacific Ocean’s CCZ. The company has argued that the metals are essential for fossil fuel-free technologies and that the impact mining will have on the ocean floor is not only minimal, but also fades next to the destruction of rain forests and human communities caused by land-based mining.
12. What was the most unexpected finding of Jeffrey Marlow’s study?
A. Oxygen levels climbed in the box. B. Nodules contained cobalt and nickel.
C. The underwater structures were sealed. D. Microorganisms consumed oxygen fast.
13. Why does The Metals Co. (TMC) mention that the study was rejected by four scientific publications?
A. To praise the researchers’ resolution.
B. To explain the long publication delay.
C. To suggest the study was initially unqualified.
D. To emphasize the fierce competition among journals.
14. What role do the last two paragraphs play in the development of the passage?
A. Providing multidimensional context for the ongoing debate.
B. Listing the potential benefits of harvesting polymetallic nodules.
C. Offering a detailed, step-by-step explanation of the new study’s approach.
D. Summarizing the key findings and presenting a final conclusion on the matter.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Deep Rock: a Data Error B. A Tiny Stone: a massive Wave
C. A Rare Metal: a Global Solution D. A Deep-Sea Mine: a Rainforest Rescue

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The use of technology in sports is supposed to be able to provide accurate and instant feedback, with better decision-making and fewer errors than human intervention. ____16____
The annual tennis tournament, Wimbledon, made the decision this year to replace their line judges. They were switched out for AI that analyses camera footage, which should be faster and more accurate. Nevertheless, the electronic line calling system failed just a week into the 2025 championship. ____17____ This meant a point had to be replayed, which resulted in Sonay Kartal controversially winning the game. If technology needs humans to operate it in the first place, whose fault is it in situations like these where things go wrong?
In football, VAR (video assistant referee) is also regularly used these days. A referee can ask for a VAR check, which means that if they are unsure of a decision, they can double-check their own judgement. However, last football season, VAR made oversights which angered a lot of managers, players and fans. ____18____ Despite this, before VAR, 82% of the decisions made were considered correct; now that figure is 96%.
____19____ Professor Gina Neff from Cambridge University says that we have a very strong, in-built sense of fairness. “The machine makes decisions based on the set of rules it’s been programmed to apply,” she said. “Right now, in many areas where AI is touching our lives, we feel like humans understand the context much better than the machine.”
____20____
A. But is that always the case?
B. Patience is needed as the system matures.
C. They said the system was not fit for purpose.
D. Then who should carry the blame when mistakes happen?
E. The ball-tracking technology was turned off by a person accidentally.
F. So, why do we still not trust technology if it often improves a situation?
G. Whether you trust it or not, technology is here to stay, including in sports.

When I landed in a small town in New Zealand as an exchange student, I thought I was ready for everything — new faces, language barriers, strange social patterns and even homesickness. Still, the smallest things made me feel out of place.
Luckily, the Wilsons, my host family, did everything they could to help me settle in — driving me around, sharing meals, and even letting me use their kitchen when. I. missed Chinese food. With their warmth and support, everything seemed to fall into place.
But at school, small moments felt bigger than I’d imagined. In our first literature class, we discussed a Hemingway story. Everyone jumped in actively, while I struggled to speak up. My desk-mate encouraged me, “Next time, just speak up.” I nodded, forcing a bitter smile.
And just like that, I found myself in another cultural trap, Mrs. Wilson’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered politely but kept mostly to myself. Mrs. Wilson noticed my silence and gently asked, “You alright, sweet girl? You’ re so quiet tonight.” My face reddened. Was my silence seen as cold, rather than polite?
That night, restless and wide awake, I wondered if I needed to laugh louder, speak faster; or hide parts of myself just to feel I belonged. Questions flooded my mind, none with answers.
A few days later, our teacher announced there would be a Culture Festival next week. “You’ ll prepare a stand to share your own culture — food, crafts, customs ... anything meaningful. You can not only display your culture but also make it interactive, allowing people to try new things, learn traditional skills. or share stories and cultural symbols,” she said. The class lit up with excitement. I sat frozen, mind racing: how could I share my traditions in English? The thought made my stomach twisted (扭曲). Yet, I gathered myself with a deep breath and signed up. After that, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparations, until the day finally came.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
【答案】16. A 17. E 18. C 19. F 20. G

【答案】Dear Ms. Jones,
I’m writing to express my sincere gratitude for organizing the online English speech check-in activity. It has greatly motivated me to practice speaking and boosted my confidence in expressing myself in English.
To make the activity even more engaging, I’d like to share a couple of gentle suggestions. First, it would be of great help to introduce weekly topic prompts, as many of us find it challenging to brainstorm appropriate topics independently. Second, adding a quick peer feedback session after each speech would allow us to learn from each other’s strengths and grow together more effectively.
Thank you for your hard work. I hope the activity will become more popular with these improvements.
Best regards,
Li Hua

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】【参考范文】(116+115词)
At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready. Taking a deep breath, I once again neatly arranged all the well-prepared items: red paper and scissors. Soon, students and teachers gathered, curiosity in their eyes. I welcomed them with a smile and demonstrated: fold, cut, unfold — and a butterfly spread its wings. A wave of surprise rippled through the crowd. Encouraged, I invited a boy to try; his star turned out uneven, yet drew laughter and applause. More joined eagerly, and I moved among them, guiding their hands, praising their efforts and celebrating each creation. When a teacher proudly held up her paper flower, the cheers grew louder. Red pieces fell to the floor, and my confidence, once hidden, shone through every new pattern.
From that day on, my world here started to change. In the hallway, students waved butterflies from my stand and greeted me with bright “Ni hao!” My heart lifted as I waved back. In literature class, I gave voice to my ideas with newfound confidence. My English was not flawless, yet my voice was steady, and instead of silence I saw nods and smiles. After class, a girl asked softly, “Can you show us more about your culture?” Her words lingered in my heart, echoing like a gentle reminder. In that echo, I realized I had not only broken free from cultural shock but also found my place in a shared story — one written by many voices, yet open enough to hold my own.
