To understand the significance of someone running a marathon in less than two hours, you need to realize that, until recently, the notion of this actually happening was truly, utterly absurd. Sure, a physiologist named Michael Joyner had floated the idea that such a feat might be humanly possible in a journal paper way back in 1991. But his peers laughed off the idea, and not much changed over the succeeding decades. In 2014, I predicted that it would happen in 2075. Frankly, even that forecast seemed overly optimistic to me, but I figured I’d be dead by then, so no one would be able to call me on it.
Well, I was wrong. Yesterday morning, the two-hour marathon barrier finally went down. A relatively unheralded 31-year-old Kenyan named Sabastian Sawe won the London Marathon with a time of 1:59:30. That is, for reference, 26.2 miles run at an average of 4:34 a mile—a pace that most recreational runners would struggle to sustain for more than a few seconds, if they could hit it at all.
Perhaps even more arresting was the fact that Sawe wasn't alone in this miracle. The man who took second place, Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, also ran under two hours, finishing just 11 seconds behind Sawe. The sight of two men shattering what was once considered the ultimate limit of human endurance in a single race suggests that we have entered a new era of performance.
The breaking of the two-hour barrier is more than just a sports record; it is a psychological breakthrough. For years, the "impossible" nature of the sub-two-hour marathon acted as a mental ceiling. Now that Sawe has proved it can be done, the boundaries of what humans believe they can achieve have been permanently shifted.
4. Why does the author mention Michael Joyner’s paper in 1991?
A. To explain the scientific training of marathon runners.
B. To show how long the two-hour barrier had been considered impossible.
C. To praise Joyner for his accurate prediction of Sawe’s success.
D. To complain about the lack of progress in physiology over the decades.
5. What can be inferred about the author’s prediction in 2014?
A. He was confident that he would witness the record in 2075.
B. He set a distant date to avoid being proven wrong during his life.
C. He believed technology would make the feat possible much earlier.
D. He based his forecast on the performance of unheralded Kenyan runners.
6. What does the performance of Yomif Kejelcha suggest?
A. Sawe’s victory was largely due to pure luck.
B. The London Marathon course was easier than expected.
C. Breaking the two-hour barrier is becoming a shared reality.
D. Ethiopian runners are more capable of sustaining a 4:34 pace.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Sabastian Sawe: A New Hero in the Running World
B. The Secret Behind the Success of Kenyan Runners
C. Beyond the Limit: The Era of the Sub-Two-Hour Marathon
D. Why Most Recreational Runners Struggle with Long Distances
根据第一段末尾“I figured I’d be dead by then, so no one would be able to call me on it”可知,作者故意把预测时间定在 2075 年,是因为他认为自己到那时已经不在人世,没人能指责他的预测错误。
第三段提到第二名 Kejelcha 也跑进了 2 小时,作者评论道“two men shattering what was once considered the ultimate limit... in a single race”,这表明打破 2 小时纪录不再是个例,而是人类整体表现进入了新纪元。故选C。

Earlier this year, in a renovated loft in downtown San Francisco, a crowd of investors and entrepreneurs gathered to witness the next frontier of technology. Among the start-ups was Amotions AI, which pitched an “emotionally intelligent real-time AI coach.” Its founder, Pianpian Xu Guthrie, explained that the model observes video calls and gives real-time tips based on the other person’s tone and facial expression. If a salesperson’s potential customer looks “confused,” the bot flags it and suggests exactly what to say next.
Emotions have become the AI industry’s new fixation. It’s no longer enough for chatbots to be smart; the major AI companies want them to “get you.” When OpenAI launched a new version of ChatGPT, it was described as “warmer by default and more conversational.” Anthropic has stated that its model, Claude, may possess a “functional version of emotions,” while Google claims its models are now capable of “reading the room”. Even Elon Musk’s xAI boasted that its bot, Grok, performed well on emotional intelligence (EQ) tests, such as identifying if a user feels “scapegoated” in a complex workplace scenario.
This shift toward EQ marks a significant departure from the early days of AI, which focused purely on logic and data processing. By training models on vast amounts of human interaction data, developers hope to create tools that can navigate the nuances of human social life. For instance, an AI that understands frustration could de-escalate a heated customer service call, or an AI that senses hesitation could help a manager provide better support to an employee.
However, the rise of "feeling" AI also raises critical questions. Critics wonder whether a machine can truly "understand" an emotion or if it is simply simulating a response based on patterns. There is also the concern that relying on an AI "coach" might weaken our own natural social instincts. If we depend on a bot to tell us when someone is confused, we might stop paying attention to the subtle human cues that have guided our social interactions for millennia.
8. What is the primary function of the Amotions AI model?
A. To record video calls for future legal evidence.
B. To provide social guidance by analyzing human emotions.
C. To help entrepreneurs find more investors in San Francisco.
D. To replace human salespersons in downtown business lofts.
9. What do the major AI companies like OpenAI and Google have in common?
A. They are focused on making AI models purely logical.
B. They are trying to give AI the ability to understand feelings.
C. They have rejected the idea of AI having any functional emotions.
D. They are collaborating to build a single emotionally intelligent bot.
10. Why is the scenario about being "scapegoated" mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To illustrate a common problem in modern workplaces.
B. To show that Grok is smarter than other AI models in logic.
C. To provide an example of how AI’s EQ is being measured.
D. To warn users about the dangers of lunchroom thefts.
11. What is the author’s concern regarding the use of AI social coaches?
A. Humans might become overly reliant on AI for social cues.
B. AI models are too expensive for the general public to afford.
C. Video calls are not a reliable source for emotional data.
D. AI's "reading the room" ability might lead to more workplace conflicts.
根据第一段“gives you real-time tips based on the other person’s tone and facial expression”以及“suggests what to say”可知,该模型通过分析情绪来提供社交指导。故选B。
根据第二段“Emotions are the AI industry’s new fixation... the major AI companies are developing chatbots that apparently aren’t just smarter—they get you”可知,这些巨头都在致力于让AI具备理解情感的能力。故选B。
11. 答案:A
根据最后一段“relying on an AI 'coach' might weaken our own natural social instincts... we might stop paying attention to the subtle human cues”可知,作者担忧人类会因为过度依赖AI教练而丧失对微妙社交信号的自然感知能力力。故选A。

Galileo Galilei, one of the first people to see the moon through a telescope, described it using what he knew about the sun and the Earth. To convey the play of sunlight on craters, for example, he invoked an earthly sunrise, describing mountains "already ablaze with the splendour of his beams" while valleys remained in shadow. For centuries, we have conjured this vision—a shining, opalescent companion hanging in the night sky.
However, this week, we were introduced to a different moon—the Artemis moon. The images captured by America’s first mission there in generations have challenged the moon we grew up with. It is not the brilliant lunar white of the Apollo missions that our parents learned about. Instead, Artemis II has brought home a view of a brown, battered world.
Whole regions of its scarred far side do not appear white, but a much more familiar, homey hue. The palette is filled with earth tones: mushroom, chestnut, hazel, cocoa, and coffee. Straight lines run across the surface, and concentric rings look like companion "coffee-cup rings" left on a table. This is a moon that looks less like a distant, cold pearl and more like a piece of our own world, stained by time and cosmic history.
This shift in perspective is significant. For decades, the moon was a symbol of the "space race," a stark, black-and-white destination. But the Artemis mission suggests that the more we look at our celestial companion, the more we see ourselves reflected in it. It’s no longer just a "shining companion" but a battered record of the solar system's history, sharing the same earthy tones as the ground beneath our feet. As we prepare for a permanent human presence there, recognizing this "earthly" side of the moon may be the first step in truly making it our second home.
12. Why did Galileo use Earthly sunrises to describe the moon?
A. To prove that the moon had its own atmosphere.
B. To make his complex scientific findings easier to understand.
C. To highlight the differences between the sun and the moon.
D. To suggest that the moon was once a part of the Earth.
13. What is the most striking difference between the "Artemis moon" and the "Apollo moon"?
A. The Artemis moon has fewer craters on its far side.
B. The Artemis moon appears in various shades of brown.
C. The Apollo moon was captured using more advanced technology.
D. The Apollo moon was described as a "tea-stained" world.
14. What does the imagery of "coffee-cup rings" imply about the moon's surface?
A. It is covered in man-made waste from previous missions.
B. Its circular patterns are remarkably similar to everyday objects.
C. It contains liquid water that has left stains over time.
D. Its surface is constantly being reshaped by human activities.
15. What is the author’s main attitude toward the new view of the moon?
A. Disappointed by the lack of "brilliant white" beauty.
B. Alarmed by the battered and scarred state of the far side.
C. Appreciative of the closer connection it builds with Earth.
D. Critical of the excessive spending on the Artemis II mission.
根据第一段“To convey the play of sunlight... he invoked an earthly sunrise”可知,伽利略利用人们熟悉的地球日出现象来传达(convey)月球上光影交织的复杂景象,目的是为了让读者更好理解。故选B。
通读全文,特别是最后一段提到的“the more we look... the more we see ourselves reflected in it”以及“recognizing this 'earthly' side... may be the first step in truly making it our second home”可知,作者对这种“接地气”的、像地球一样的月球新面貌持积极赞赏的态度,认为这拉近了月地距离。故选C。

How to Think, Not What to Think
Across the country, people are questioning the value and role of higher education, and institutions—particularly the elite ones—are experiencing a crisis in public trust. Tech titans are convinced that AI will break higher education, while many observers lament its corrupting influence. ___16___ It turns out that the true purpose of a university might be more critical than ever in our modern world.
Beyond Knowledge Transfer
Higher education is not merely the transfer of knowledge. In an age of informational opulence, we are awash in readily available data but lacking discernment and empathy. ___17___ If we view college only as a way to get a job or learn facts, we ignore the qualities that expand the mind. As a cognitive scientist, I have studied the negative consequences of excessive information. ___18___ Research shows that this cognitive burden can negatively affect our brains and, ultimately, our performance.
Practicing Human Skills
College is not just about transmitting knowledge; it’s also about learning and practicing the skills that connect us to one another. While some believe AI will replace universities, technology cannot replicate human wisdom. ___19___ They help us navigate a world where information is abundant but understanding is scarce. By engaging in diverse perspectives on campus, students learn how to communicate and collaborate across differences.
Ultimately, the goal of higher education is to teach students how to think, not what to think. ___20___ By focusing on these mind-expanding qualities, universities can fulfill their social mission and prepare students for a future that requires more than just knowing facts.
A. Instead, they should foster critical thinking.
B. These human skills are essential for our society.
C. We are in a state of constant information overload.
D. This shift in focus is what will restore public trust.
E. Some even wonder whether the “mind-expanding” quality is gone forever.
F. This narrow view fails to recognize the university's role in social glue.
G. However, universities are more than just factories for professional degrees.
