My cousins were raised in a rich family. We loved to go to their house because it was so big and wonderful. Best of all, it had a beautiful swimming pool. It was shaped like a big “L”.
One thing that always impressed(使印象深刻)me was that my cousins didn’t think they were better than anyone else, even though they were rich. The reason was that Uncle John and Aunt Kate made sure they didn’t give my cousins every gift they asked for. The pool was a perfect example of this.
One day in the summer, my cousins were bored and hot, so they said to Uncle John, “Dad, we’re the only kids in this neighbourhood that don’t have a pool. Can we have one?”
“Of course you can!” agreed their father. “It will be started tomorrow.” The kids were surprised to see how agreeable their dad was.
Early the next day, my uncle woke up the kids and brought them downstairs. “Come on. I have a surprise for you!” he said. “Close your eyes.” They did, and he led them to the backyard. “Now hold out your hands,” he said. When they opened their eyes, each of them had been presented with a new shovel (铲子).
▲ Then, their dad said with a smile, “You can have a pool, but you’re going to have to dig it!”

Then, the professional workers came and poured the cement (水泥). In another week, they had a finished pool. And best of all, they had helped make it. They were so proud!

The Great Sphinx of Giza (吉萨狮身人面像)
①Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza was built around 2,500 B.C. But John Anthony West says that it’s much older. If he’s right, “everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations (文明) would have to be completely revised,” he told a magazine.
②West, a writer and filmmaker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.
③West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down (磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
④Wait a minute? Water? How could that be? The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
⑤Whether West is right or wrong, it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.
⑥West gave some advice for kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.

A. sand B. water C. wind D. heat
46. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The place where West did his research.
B. The period when the Sphinx was built.
C. The reason why West holds his opinion.
D. The technology which was used to build the Sphinx.
47. Which of the following may the writer agree?
A. Science progresses through giving different opinions.
B. Egyptian civilization should be earlier than we thought.
C. One should do some research before giving their opinions.
D. Kids should ask lots of questions and believe what their teachers say.

In ancient China, people called a man of great virtue (美德) a gentleman. “________”

At first, the digging went slowly. They were tired out every day. But as the week passed, they began to see their pool take shape. Within ten days, they had the pool completely dug out.

46. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

Therefore, orchids stand for elegance in Chinese people's eyes”,与d句“兰生幽谷无人识,客种东轩遗我香”相匹配;第四段提到:“The bamboo grows up straight and it is difficult to break, so it stands for those gentlemen who are upright (正直的) and positive. The inside of the bamboo is empty, which means being modest (谦虚的) in Chinese culture”,与a句“密竹娟娟数十茎,旱天潇洒有高情”相匹配;第二段提到:“The plum tree is famous for blossoming (开花) in the dead of winter. Its nice smell fills the air at one of the coldest times of a year, making it difficult to go unnoticed. It stands for inner beauty and fearlessness under hard conditions”,与b句“不经一番寒彻骨,怎得梅花扑鼻香”相匹配;第五段提到:“Planted as early as three thousand years ago, the chrysanthemum is a traditional flower loved by Chinese people. When nearly all the flowers fall, the chrysanthemum blooms in the cold autumn air and foretells the coming of winter. It stands for the virtue to stand up to all difficulties”,与c句“不是花中偏爱菊,此花开尽更无花”相匹配。所以顺序是bdac。

【答案】
Good Ways to Reduce Stress
Stress is part of growing up. I used to feel stressed out about my schoolwork, especially before big exams.
To deal with it, I have some useful ways. First, I listen to soft music when I feel nervous—it helps me calm down quickly. Second, I take a 10-minute walk outside every day, which lets me clear my mind. Third, I talk to my parents or friends about my worries; sharing makes things much easier.
Actually, stress isn’t always bad. It pushes me to work harder and become more creative. Learning to manage stress well helps me grow into a better version of myself.
