人与社会—社会服务与人际沟通
避免过度反应,改善人际关系
When John was driving to work, someone
suddenly cut in.He screamed and yelled angrily
at the driver.The driver,having a bad
morning, shouted back in anger as well. All of
us,sometimes,at least overreact to small
things, but the reality is that it's not worth it.
Overreacting can lead to creating a bigger issue
or accident.Stress in our lives can create the
conditions for us to overreact. But even though
doing so might let out one's anger,it doesn't
solve the true source of the stress. All it does is
create more anxiety.
Listen,it's totally okay to feel your
emotions and want to explode sometimes, but
real issues start to arise when we react much
more than necessary.When you overreact,it
might be a sign that there are other deeper
problems you aren't dealing with, which are
called emotional triggers(诱因).Everyone has
emotional triggers and here are some common
ones:events that repeat maddening experiences
from one's past,situations where one feels a
sense of unfairness or disrespect, and moments
when one's loved ones get harmed.
If we know what our triggers are,we can
learn to be more in control of ourselves when
our buttons are pushed.Personally,I overreact
whenever I work hard on something but
someone is critical of it.I feel my professional
ability is under attack and become defensive(
御的)immediately. But then I realize that my
anger is actually fueled by my constant pressure
to be perfect and fear of criticism.Deep down,
I feel tired and the sense of unfairness is killing
me.It may be hard for someone to understand
how the feeling of being unappreciated can drain
those who draw energy from having their
efforts recognized.Knowing this about myself,
I become more aware of my reactions and try to
respond to people more calmly when they offer
criticism, which turns out to draw me closer to
others.Therefore,when you're triggered,keep
breathing deeply and cool down.Think about
what just happened calmly by bringing yourself
Unit 11 Sad movies make me cry.
closer to the truth and think about how other
people might feel about things.Overreaction
sometimes happens when we overfocus on
ourselves and our own emotions.Remember,
none of us is entitled to a perfect life.
If you aren't totally aware of what your
triggers are,it might be helpful to reflect on
the past week and all the times when something
upset you.Identify the things that bother you
the most and take action.
So when you get annoyed at little things,
take a moment to think about what triggers you
calmly and try the above tips.By practicing,
you can surely control your temper when you
are about to explode next time. And one day
you might find yourself among a closer circle.
