Dear Peter,
I’m really excited to share with you a volunteer activity that I took part in. Last winter, I joined a community service project aimed at helping the elderly who lived alone. The difficulty I encountered was that some of the old people were quite hard to communicate with because of their severe hearing problems. What I did was to speak louder and slower, and I also used body language, which really helped break the communication barrier.
I firmly believe that youth should take on social responsibilities actively. What we do, no matter how small, can bring warmth and hope to those in need.
I’m eager to know about your experiences. Could you share what volunteer work you’ve done and what you’ve learned from it?
Yours,
Li Jin

Most of you are probably familiar with various stories of searching for alien life, but have you heard about the scientist who was responsible for detecting the first traces of intelligent life lurking throughout our galaxy? This is Frank Drake’s story.
At the age of 8, his father one day told Drake there are other worlds in space, which astounded him. He had no idea that such a thing was a possibility — he thought Earth was it. So he wondered, what are they like? Are the people the same as us? Do they look the same way we do? What’s their planet like? And of course, at that time, there was no way that those questions could be answered in the slightest.
Later on, when he was in college, he chose the elementary astronomy course. In the course, he went to the campus observatory, and one of the things he observed was the planet Jupiter. Even through a small telescope, it was just very clear that it was another world but not a picture in a book or something, which made Drake deeply absorbed.
Frank Drake is mostly known for developing the Drake equation (德雷克方程式), which is a mathematical equation developed to estimate the number of detectable alien civilizations in the Milky Way.
People always say that the search for alien life has failed. “You’ve been searching for 60 years and you haven’t found anything. So doesn’t that say that intelligent life is very rare?” “That’s wrong, because the amount of searching we’ve done has hardly touched the number of possibilities that are out there. We’ve only covered a tiny, tiny fraction of all the possibilities,” Drake said. “When you spend your entire life on the things you love, you live a better life than most people,” he added.
24.What does the underlined word “astounded” probably mean?
A.Astonished. B.Moved. C.Discouraged. D.Confused.
25.What aroused Drake’s greater interest in astronomy during college?
A.His observation of intelligent life in space.
B.His firsthand view of Jupiter through a telescope.
C.His teaching experience in elementary astronomy class.
D.His achievement in creating the famous Drake equation.
26.What is Drake’s attitude toward the alien searching work?
A.It is a total failure. B.There are various benefits.
C.It is too expensive. D.There are many possibilities.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Drake?
A.Gifted and hardworking. B.Inquiring and brave.
C.Passionate and persevering. D.Inventive and sharp-minded.
C
Symbolic of beauty, pride, and wealth in some cultures — likely thanks to the males’ rainbow-colored tail feathers and dramatic courtship display — peacocks are often associated with being confident and attention-grabbing. So, perhaps it’s no surprise that these striking creatures can be used in a metaphor to illustrate complex family dynamics.
Being honest about the ups and downs of family life isn’t something you’ll usually hear from a ‘peacock parent’. Instead, they’ll project the perfect family, parading their child’s talents in public, while criticising them behind closed doors when disappointed. For the child on the receiving end of this treatment, it can feel like their value is only as part of a show put on for everyone else’s entertainment.
You may have heard the saying “as proud as a peacock”, which describes someone who thinks highly of themselves and likes to be the center of attention. When this appears in parenting, it is called narcissistic (自恋的) parenting. Such parents lack understanding and care for their children’s feelings, often control or influence them in order to meet their own emotional needs, and always want to feel powerful or special in the family.
The phrase became more widely known after British psychotherapist and writer Kathleen Saxton published her book My Parent the Peacock. In the book, she looks into how narcissistic parenting influences children. She also talks about two common roles these children take on: the ‘scapegoated child’, who becomes a target for the parent’s own worries and shortcomings, and the ‘golden child’, who is treated like something valuable to make the parent feel more important and superior.
Counsellor Olena Chechel says this arrogant behaviour comes from deep insecurity and lack of confidence inside these parents. That is why they see their children more like parts of themselves or tools to help them feel successful and important.
“The child must be perceived as acceptable, shiny, or significant, as this all ties back to them. The message is simple: ‘You have to be what I tell you to be, because I know best,’” Olena says. “This is deeply harmful for the child, as they are not able to develop their own identity.”
28.Why does the author mention “peacocks” in the first paragraph?
A.To show peacock charm. B.To introduce a parenting method.
C.To fix family conflicts. D.To illustrate the family complexity.
29.What do the peacock parents look like?
A.They prioritize children’s feelings over evaluations.
B.They express their disappointment to children publicly.
C.They attach importance to others’ perception of their family.
D.They share their real family situation with people around them.
30.What’s the root cause of the parents’ behavior?
A.Their low self-worth. B.Their high expectations.
C.Their heavy work pressure. D.Their rich life experience.
31.What is Olena Chechel’s attitude toward peacock parenting?
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Tolerant. D.Critical.
D
A butterfly’s wings can have many jobs besides keeping the insect high up in the air. They may be used to attract mates, or to warn potential attackers to stay away. All of these roles, though, depend on their unchanging colouration. This plays into the idea that butterfly wings are dead tissue, like a bird’s feathers. In fact, that’s not true. For example, in some species males’ wings have special cells releasing some chemicals which attract females.
Nanfang Yu, a physicist at Columbia University, in New York, has been looking into the matter. Together with Naomi Pierce, a butterfly specialist at Harvard University, he has now shown, in a paper published in Nature Communications in February, 2020, that butterfly wings are, indeed, very much alive.
In their experiments, the two researchers used a laser (激光) to heat up spots on the wings of dozens of butterfly species. When the temperature of the area under the laser reached 40°C or so, the insects responded within seconds by doing things that stopped their wings heating up further. These actions included a butterfly turning around to minimize its profile to the laser, moving its wings up and down or simply walking away.
Butterflies engaged in all of these heat-minimising activities even when the researchers blindfolded them. That suggested the relevant sensors were on the wings themselves. Dr Yu and Dr Pierce therefore searched those wings for likely looking sensory cells. They found some, in the form of neurons (神经元) that were similar to heat detectors known from other insects. They also uncovered disc-shaped cells that appeared to be similar to pressure-sensitive neurons. They guess that these are there to detect deformation of the wing — information an insect could use to control its flight pattern.
The third discovery they made to contradict the “dead wing” idea was that some butterfly wings have a heartbeat. A butterfly’s wings have veins (翅脉). These carry a bloodlike liquid which, researchers have now found in males, shows a pulse (脉搏) of several dozen beats per minute. The source of this pulse appears to be the scent pad (气味垫) , a dark spot on the wings that produces the female-attracting chemicals. Apparently, this “wing heart” acts as a pump that helps bloodlike liquid through the scent pad.
In all their experiments simulating different environmental conditions, Dr Yu and Dr Pierce consistently found that, different parts of the wing are covered by different sorts of scales (鳞屑). In particular, tubes pass through scales over the scent pads. This improves their ability to spread heat away and helps keep the living parts of a butterfly’s wings alive.
32.A bird’s feathers are mentioned in Paragraph 1 to ________.
A.introduce the latest research findings on a bird
B.highlight the special feature of a bird’s feathers
C.show common knowledge about butterfly wings
D.stress the difference between a butterfly and a bird
33.What can we learn from Dr Yu and Dr Pierce’s experiments?
A.Butterfly wings are complicated living organs.
B.Butterfly wings have little reaction to external heat.
C.The scent pads on some male butterfly wings are their hearts.
D.Heat-minimising activities help detect deformation of the wings.
34.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Seeing Is Believing B.More Than Meets The Eye
C.Nothing Seek, Nothing Find D.Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds
Stargazing offers a breathtaking connection to the universe, yet many people miss out on this experience due to a few easily overlooked factors. Anyone can enjoy an unforgettable journey through the universe. 35
Avoid light pollution.
Light pollution results from the overused or poorly directed artificial light produced by cities, streetlights, buildings, and vehicles. It creates a glowing mist that hides faint stars and other objects in the sky. No stargazer wants such an obstacle to spoil the view. 36 If you’re observing from home, consider using professional instruments that direct light downward.
Consider the moon.
The moon, our closest neighbor in space, goes through a monthly cycle of phases that greatly affect stargazing conditions. The best time to observe the stars is during the new moon, when the moon is positioned between the Earth and the sun and remains invisible, leaving the sky at its darkest. 37
Height matters.
To get a clear view of the sky, it’s important to choose a location free from surrounding buildings. 38 If traveling to the countryside isn’t an option, try to get to a higher spot. The rooftop of a tall building, for instance, can help you rise above nearby structures and improve your view. Look for accessible buildings in your area that might offer this advantage. 39
Timing plays a key role in what you’ll see in the night sky. Winter generally offers the clearest skies because cold air holds less moisture-just remember to dress warmly. Summer skies bring a different set of star groups and often present a stunning view of the Milky Way. Beginners may find dusk, just after sunset, a good time to start, while serious stargazers with better equipment often prefer the late-night hours.
A.Pick the right time.
B.Take account of the season.
C.Rural areas are ideal for this.
D.All you need is a little preparation and knowledge.
E.Using a telescope can greatly enhance your viewing experience.
F.It’s best to avoid nights with a full moon for better star visibility.
G.If possible, visit a dark park that is specially meant for stargazing.
I used to put myself in a different category from my classmates. The class was full of brains programmed to think perfectly while my brain panicked at conflict. The first time I cried in front of my classmates, I was done for. Tears betrayed (出卖) my emotions on my first chemistry test. I took the “walk of shame” towards my teacher’s desk, making sure to cover my eyes with my hair and did the seemingly impossible. I expressed my need for a break to my teacher.
Admitting that I needed help seemed like the downfall of my second year of high school where I was supposed to be the optimistic girl who smiled until her cheeks hurt. As I look back at my painful experience with a clearer view and with kindness for myself, I realize that asking for a break isn’t shameful.
As a general rule, it seems that it is only acceptable to acknowledge that you’re mentally unwell when your pain takes on a physical form. Just because sadness is invisible does not mean it is made-up. So many thoughts rushed through my head during my chemistry test and one stuck out to me: “What if I am pretending how I feel? What if I don’t deserve to ask for help because this anxiety is fake?”
Unfortunately, so many others have these dangerous thoughts flashing in their brain. They disregard how they feel, thinking that bottling up feelings solves their problems. Sadly, this is not surprising because the shame surrounding mental disorders frightens people into not speaking up and advocating for their feelings.
I truly understand how scary it is. Take it step-by-step and just focus on admitting to yourself that you need help before your feelings become buried from staying hidden for so long.
40.What made the author feel different from her classmates?
41.How does the author view asking for a break now?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems.
43.What action (s) can you take to care for your emotional well-being? (In about 40 words)
1. 分享一次你参与的公益或志愿活动(如:社区服务、支教、环保等),并描述你在此次活动中遇到的困难及如何克服的;

D.Confused.

C.Tolerant. D.Critical.

C.Passionate and persevering. D.Inventive and sharp-minded.
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.D 27.C
根据第二段“At the age of 8, his father one day told Drake there are other worlds in space, which astounded him. He had no idea that such a thing was a possibility — he thought Earth was it.(8岁时,父亲告诉德雷克太空中还有其他星球,这让他astounded。他从没想过会有这种可能,一直以为地球就是唯一的世界。)”可知,弗兰克・德雷克从没想过除地球以外还有其他星球,所以猜测astounded意为“震惊的”。故选A项。
根据第三段“In the course, he went to the campus observatory, and one of the things he observed was the planet Jupiter. Even through a small telescope, it was just very clear that it was another world but not a picture in a book or something, which made Drake deeply absorbed.(在这门课上,他去了校园天文台,观测到的天体之一是木星。即便通过小型望远镜,也能清晰地看到那是另一个真实的星球,而非书本上的图片,这让德雷克深深着迷。)”可知,大学时望远镜里亲眼见到木星激发了他对天文学的浓厚兴趣。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第五段“That’s wrong, because the amount of searching we’ve done has hardly touched the number of possibilities that are out there. We’ve only covered a tiny, tiny fraction of all the possibilities,(这种观点是错误的,因为我们迄今所做的搜寻工作,几乎还没有触及宇宙中存在的可能性总量。我们仅仅探索了所有可能性中极其微小的一部分,)”可知,德雷克认为外星生命探索仍存在诸多可能性。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据第五段“When you spend your entire life on the things you love, you live a better life than most people,(当你毕生投身于自己热爱的事业,你的人生会比大多数人更有意义,)”以及上文内容可知,德雷克一生执着探索外星生命,热爱科研、坚持不懈,可以用热忱且坚毅来形容。故选C项。
C.Tolerant. D.Critical.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.D
根据第一段中“Symbolic of beauty, pride, and wealth in some cultures — likely thanks to the males’ rainbow-colored tail feathers and dramatic courtship display — peacocks are often associated with being confident and attention-grabbing. So, perhaps it’s no surprise that these striking creatures can be used in a metaphor to illustrate complex family dynamics.(在部分文化中,孔雀象征着美丽、骄傲与财富 —— 这多半源于雄孔雀五彩斑斓的尾羽以及极具仪式感的求偶展示。因此,孔雀常与自信、引人注目联系在一起。所以,这些外形惊艳的生物被用来比喻复杂的家庭关系,也就不足为奇了。)”和第二段中“Being honest about the ups and downs of family life isn’t something you’ll usually hear from a ‘peacock parent’.(“孔雀型父母”向来不愿坦然面对家庭生活的起起落落。)”
根据第二段中“Instead, they’ll project the perfect family, parading their child’s talents in public, while criticising them behind closed doors when disappointed.(相反,他们会展现出一个完美的家庭,在公众面前炫耀孩子的才华,而当失望时,却在背后批评他们。)”
根据倒数第二段中“Counsellor Olena Chechel says this arrogant behaviour comes from deep insecurity and lack of confidence inside these parents.(顾问奥莱娜·切切尔说,这种傲慢的行为源于这些父母内心深处的不安全感和缺乏自信。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“The message is simple: ‘You have to be what I tell you to be, because I know best,’” Olena says. “This is deeply harmful for the child, as they are not able to develop their own identity.(信息很简单:‘你必须成为我告诉你的样子,因为我最了解。’奥莱娜说。“这对孩子是非常有害的,因为他们无法发展自己的身份。”)”可知,奥莱娜·切切尔对孔雀式育儿持批判态度。故选D。
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.B
根据第一段中“All of these roles, though, depend on their unchanging colouration. This plays into the idea that butterfly wings are dead tissue, like a bird’s feathers. (然而,所有这些作用都依赖于它们不变的颜色。这符合蝴蝶翅膀是死组织的观点,就像鸟的羽毛一样。)”可知,提到鸟的羽毛是为了引出人们普遍认为的“蝴蝶翅膀是死组织”这一常识性观点,为后文反驳这一观点做铺垫。故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“When the temperature of the area under the laser reached 40°C or so, the insects responded within seconds by doing things that stopped their wings heating up further. (当激光照射区域的温度达到40°C左右时,这些昆虫在几秒钟内就做出反应,采取行动阻止翅膀进一步升温。)”以及第四段中“They found some, in the form of neurons (神经元) that were similar to heat detectors known from other insects. They also uncovered disc-shaped cells that appeared to be similar to pressure-sensitive neurons. (他们发现了一些神经元,这些神经元类似于其他昆虫身上已知的热探测器。他们还发现了圆盘状细胞,这些细胞似乎类似于压力敏感神经元。)”和第五段中“The third discovery they made to contradict the “dead wing” idea was that some butterfly wings have a heartbeat. (他们做出的第三个反驳“死翅膀”观点的发现是,一些蝴蝶翅膀有心跳。)”可知,Yu博士和Pierce博士的实验表明蝴蝶翅膀具有感知温度、压力和心跳等生命特征,是复杂的活体器官。故选A。
根据全文内容,尤其是第二段中“Together with Naomi Pierce, a butterfly specialist at Harvard University, he has now shown, in a paper published in Nature Communications in February, 2020, that butterfly wings are, indeed, very much alive. (他与哈佛大学的蝴蝶专家Naomi Pierce合作,在2020年2月发表于《自然·通讯》的一篇论文中证实:蝴蝶的翅膀确实是有生命的。)”可知,文章主要揭示了蝴蝶翅膀表面之下隐藏的生命特征,说明蝴蝶翅膀远比人们看到的要复杂得多。More Than Meets The Eye(眼见未必为实/表象之下另有玄机)最能概括文章主旨,暗示蝴蝶翅膀不仅仅是飞行的工具,还有更多的生命功能。
【答案】35.D 36.G 37.F 38.C 39.A

40.Her brain panicked at conflict, while her classmates were good at thinking perfectly. 41.She doesn’t think it is shameful. Instead, it is a reasonable way to care for her emotional well-being. 42.Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems. In fact, many people disregard their true feelings instead of acknowledging them, and they mistakenly believe that bottling up feelings can solve problems. 43.I can talk to friends or family when feeling stressed, keep a journal to express emotions, and take breaks to relax instead of pushing myself too hard.
Her brain panicked at conflict, while her classmates were good at thinking perfectly.
根据第二段“As I look back at my painful experience with a clearer view and with kindness for myself, I realize that asking for a break isn’t shameful.(当我以更清晰的视角回顾那段痛苦的经历,并对自己怀有宽容之心时,我意识到请求休息并非是一件可耻的事情)”可知,作者并不认为这是可耻的。 She doesn’t think it is shameful. Instead, it is a reasonable way to care for her emotional well-being.
根据倒数第二段“They disregard how they feel, thinking that bottling up feelings solves their problems.(他们不顾自己的真实感受,认为压抑情绪就能解决他们的问题)”可知,“acknowledge their true feelings”是错误的。 Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems. In fact, many people disregard their true feelings instead of acknowledging them, and they mistakenly believe that bottling up feelings can solve problems.
I can talk to friends or family when feeling stressed, keep a journal to express emotions, and take breaks to relax instead of pushing myself too hard.

Yours,
Li Jin
Dear Peter,
I’m really excited to share with you a volunteer activity that I took part in.
Yours,
Li Jin
