Creative Inventions for a Better World
Every year, our magazine shares a list of the most useful and creative new inventions. Some help solve serious problems around the world, while others just make everyday life more enjoyable. Below are some of this year’s list. Which one do you like the most?
Eco-Friendly Camping Gear
People who love outdoor activities care a lot about nature, but many camping products are not good for the environment. To fix this, Nemo Equipment developed its Endless Promise line of camping gear. The backpacks and sleeping bags are made from polyester (聚酯纤维), a material that can be recycled. The company also promises to repair, recycle, or resell the equipment (NEMO products only). They will take it back when customers are ready for something new.
Clean Water for Everyone
In some areas, people cannot easily get safe drinking water. That’s why three groups — a creative agency, a health organization, and a water company — worked together to invent Filter (过滤器) Caps. These small, easy-to-carry filters fit onto the top of water bottles. Users can fill their bottles from wells, ponds, or rivers, and the special filter inside the cap clears harmful substances (物质), making the water safe to drink. One filter can clean up to five liters of water each day.
Exercise for Wheelchair Users
Regular treadmills (跑步机) are made for people to walk or run in place, but those who use wheelchairs also need ways to stay active. The Wheely-X is a treadmill specially designed for wheelchair users. It connects to fitness apps and includes fun exercise games to help users stay active. Wheely-X was invented by Kangsters, a company that develops technology for people with disabilities. The product is now available (可用) for individuals, gyms, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers (康复中心).
From protecting the environment and providing clean water to improving fitness for everyone, each one is a smart, well-designed solution to a different problem. These three creative inventions show how thoughtful designs can make a real difference in the world.

32. What is a common goal that all the three inventions try to achieve?

A great cultural event took place in Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province. The English-language The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭) by Tang Xianzu was performed in China for the first time. At the same time, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Dream of Nanke were also performed. These plays created a dialogue across time and space and showed the shared human feelings of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare.
Tang Xianzu from China and William Shakespeare from England were great writers during the mid-16th century. Though they never met, their works share many similarities. Their works were about themes like love, life and human spirits, and often used “dreams” in plays to express feelings that still touch people today. This idea was shown clearly at a gala held by CCTV in Fuzhou.
In the drama Tang & Shakespeare, The Peony Pavilion and Romeo and Juliet appeared on the same stage. The performance showed Eastern “pure love” and Western “devoted love”, proving that writers from different cultures can express similar feelings about love and life.
The English-language The Peony Pavilion was successful in bringing Eastern and Western cultures together. However, it also faced a challenge: how to make the special singing and music of Kunqu opera easy to understand for English people? To solve this problem, the actors used rhythms often found in Shakespeare’s plays and mixed Western and Chinese styles in movement, dance and music. With actors from different countries, the performance became a real cultural exchange, not just a translation.
Another exciting part of the event was the “Tang-Shakespeare Legacy: Youth Dialogue”, which brought together young actors from China and the UK. These young artists not only keep traditions alive, but also bring new ideas to classic works. Their work proves that cultural differences are bridges, not barriers (障碍). As we witness the exchange, we are reminded that the influence of Tang and Shakespeare is not limited to their time but lives on in every play, every shared story, and every heart it touches.
33. What do we know about Tang and Shakespeare according to the passage?
A. They worked together to write plays.
B. They were writers in different times.
C. They used dreams to express feelings.
D. They wrote plays in the same country.
34. How did the performers help English speakers enjoy The Peony Pavilion?
A. By inviting many famous international actors.
B. By changing the old story into a modern one.
C. By using Western rhythms and mixing art styles.
D. By explaining the play before each performance.
35. Why are young artists important in this cultural event?
A. They help make the performance shorter.
B. They bring new life to traditional works.
C. They follow old traditions without change.
D. They decide which plays to be performed.
36. Which idea is best supported by the passage as a whole?
A. Chinese artists play an important role in this cultural event.
B. Traditional art should be protected without making changes.
C. Cultural differences lead to misunderstandings without dialogue.
D. Cultural exchange helps classical works connect different cultures.

Winter solstice (冬至) is Izzie’s favorite day of the year. Guests at her house enjoy songs and stories well into the night.
But Izzie’s favorite part has always been making snow angels with Grandpa at noon. When they were standing over the angels, their shadows would look like two skinny huge men with wings.
But this year is different. One shadow is missing. Izzie feels very sad.
Uncle Bert has arrived. He greets Izzie with a hug. “Amaze us with your violin tonight, Izzie?”
Izzie holds her breath. Her violin reminds her of Grandpa. She hasn’t picked it up for weeks.
“You know Izzie doesn’t like a listener, Bert,” says Izzie’s mom.
“Kids change,” Uncle Bert smiles. “I have a gift for you, Izzie.” He hands Izzie a case.
“It’s Grandpa’s violin.” Izzie opens the case. She touches the familiar image of a sun carved into the violin’s neck, fingering the song Grandpa taught her. Grandpa said ancient people thought the earth was flat and the sun stood still on winter solstice.
Izzie feels her heart stands still. How can we have solstice without Grandpa’s song?
The sun starts setting. All guests have arrived, talking and laughing. For a moment, Izzie thinks she hears Grandpa’s voice. But it’s only Uncle Bert sounding like him.
Soon, it turns dark. Dad starts the bonfire. The celebration will begin.
Grandpa was always first. When the bonfire began, he’d step onto the chair and play his favorite song, Sweet Angels Come Nearer. Izzie would get a warm feeling.
Izzie knows the sun will start rising and setting tomorrow, but she feels lost without Grandpa’s song. Someone needs to play it. But who will?
Dad tells a story. Aunt Bea sings. Simon reads a poem.
In a moment of quiet, Izzie’s hand shoots into the air.
“Izzie? You’d like to share, too?” Dad asked.
She steps up onto the chair, hands shaking. She takes a breath and turns her back to the fire, pretending (假装) no one is watching. One shaky note. Another. She imagines Grandpa playing the same violin. Her notes become stronger.
As she plays, a voice rises behind her, singing the words to Grandpa’s song. It’s Uncle Bert. Mom joins in. Then Dad, Simon, Aunt Bea.
Voices enlarge. Grandpa’s violin soars (飞扬).
Izzie feels the love of her family encircle her, warm like sunshine.
37. Which of the following activities did Izzie’s grandpa do with her?
①making snow angels together at noon ②playing the violin around the bonfire
③reading a winter poem to the guest ④enjoying the strange huge shadows
A. ①③④ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③
38. What’s the correct order of the events?
a. Uncle Bert gives Grandpa’s violin to Izzie as a gift.
b. Guests get together and the celebration is going to start.
c. Izzie plays the violin bravely at the celebration.
d. Grandpa and Izzie used to make snow angels on Winter Solstice.
e. Izzie doesn’t touch the violin for a long time because of missing Grandpa.
A. d → e → a → b → c B. d → a → e → c → b
C. a → e → d → b → c D. a → d → e → b → c
39. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. It’s meaningful for people to hold a celebration on the solstice.
B. Izzie can feel the love of family around, warm like sunshine.
C. When the bonfire began, Grandpa was the first to play his fiddle.
D. Izzie seldom played the violin in front of others before Grandpa passed away.
40. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A solstice celebration B. The sun stands still
C. A warm-hearted uncle D. The violin remains there

Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. But animals and their needs are different, so how can you make sure that you choose the right one for yourself? Here are some top tips.
Do your research
You may like the look of a special pet but that doesn’t mean it is right for you. 41 So, think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you keep it.
Some pets may also require more vet care than others. Take French bulldogs and pugs for example, they can suffer many health problems over their lifetime, including problems with their breathing and skin conditions due to their special features. 42
Think about your lifestyle
For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of it during the day? 43 Know yourself with the size and exercise requirements of different pets to make sure they’re the right choice for you.
Do your sums
44 Consider the cost before you pick a pet and make sure you can afford it. From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a spending.
Use a trustworthy breeder (饲养员)
If you do want to buy a dog or cat, ask a vet or breed club to recommend a trustworthy breeder. Ask the breeder for all the relative paperwork and see the pet’s parents or relatives to check their temper, general health and welfare (福利). 45 It is because these may well turn out to be dealers who have little interest in the welfare of the pets they sell.
Choosing the right pet takes time and thought, but it’s worth it. A happy pet and a happy owner start with making the right choice.
A. Don’t throw yourself into money problems.
B. Don’t shop online or from dealers who have no requirement.
C. Charities can offer support and advice about personal pets.
D. Every pet has its own personality and some often have strong characters.
E. If you want a cat, can it go outdoor while you’re out during the day?
F. We’d advise pet lovers to do their research before taking on one of these pets.

六、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Shanxi is home to the largest number of ancient buildings in China. Xuankong Temple is no doubt one of the most wonderful ones of such a saying.
Made of wood, tiles and stones during the mid-Northern Wei Dynasty, the temple is made up of two three-story pavilions (亭阁) and a yard linked by stairs and steps. The stairs and steps are lined along the surface of a sheer cliff (陡峭的悬崖) rising 50 meters above a stream at the foot of the mountain.
Seen from below, Xuankong Temple, which means “temple hanging in the sky”, appears terribly dangerous. It is supported only by a few thin stanchions (支柱) standing on protruding (伸出的) rocks. For that reason, it was selected by Time magazine as one of the 10 most dangerous buildings in the world in 2010.
Sun Shupeng, an engineer, however, disagreed with the idea that Xuankong Temple is a dangerous structure. “The temple has been standing firmly on the Hengshan cliff for more than 1,500 years and is still kept complete and strong” he said. “A study of the temple is an exploration of an ancient Chinese engineering wonder.”
Sun said the stanchions were only added recently as a comfort to visitors. About twenty thin square beams (梁) support most of the building’s weight. A number of large, deep holes were dug into the cliff’s surface, and two-thirds of the length of the beams together with wedges (楔子) were driven into each one.
In addition to its strong building, local people have found that the part of cliff above the temple acts like an umbrella to protect the temple from rain and sunlight. In summer, when the daytime is the longest, the temple only receives about two hours of direct sunlight a day during the morning.
The narrow valley it faces also changes the direction of airflow. The wind usually blows toward the cliff facing the temple, but rarely reaches the temple.

Hi everyone,
I’m Li Hua. Today I’d like to share how small acts bring me big happiness.
Last month, I struggled with my math homework. Noticing my worry, my teacher patiently explained it until I finally understood. Her kindness warmed my heart and showed me the power of small acts of help.
Encouraged by her, I decided to pass on the kindness. On weekends, I joined a volunteer team—we cleaned a park and chatted with the elderly. Seeing their smiles made me truly happy.
Now I believe happiness lies in both receiving and giving help. If each of us starts with small acts, together we can make daily life brighter for everyone.
Thank you!
