“Drinking ink” is a common expression to show that a person is 2 . Is there anyone who really drinks ink? It could be true in Chinese history. During the Northern Qi Dynasty, those who 3 very badly in the exam would be punished by drinking one liter (升) of ink. A
Two months after I returned home from my voyage to Lilliput(小人国), I was ready to set off again. I joined in Captain John Nicholas’ adventure. We set sail on the 20th of June, 1702. The voyage was smooth and we stopped at the Cape of Good Hope for fresh water. We found a small hole in the ship and had to put down all the goods and got the ship repaired. Then the captain was sick and we had to spend the winter there. We continued our voyage at the end of March and sailed northward after passing the Straits of Madagascar(马达加斯加海峡).
A few weeks later, we were hit by a very bad storm, which lasted for three days. Finally, we survived, but we did not know where we were when the storm was over. Once again, we needed fresh water very badly. Fortunately, the watcher saw land. The water was too shallow(浅的) and the captain had to send his men to the land in a small boat. I asked the captain to let me join the group because I wanted to see a strange land. When we got on land, the other men went to look for fresh water, while I walked alone in the other direction.
When I was in full view of the beach we had landed, I was surprised to see our men rowing the small boat away toward the ship. After the small boat, there was a giant creature walking as fast as he could. Our men, fortunately, were ahead of him and the monster slowed down as the water became deeper. Then I turned around and started to run away from the beach. Suddenly, I stopped because I saw the man who was chasing our boat in the sea, just fifty feet in front of me.

①Behind every success lies a simple truth: people who often celebrate small wins achieve more. It’s not about holding big parties for every little good thing. It’s about having a winner’s way of thinking. Notice, praise and value these small victories, and use them to keep moving forward.
②Small wins hold the power to make a difference. When we realize every tiny bit of progress we make and value it, it will boost our motivation and bring us joy. As we see ourselves getting closer to our goals step by step, our brain will send a positive signal : “This is working!” It will keep pushing us to move forward without stopping. In fact, our choice to value or ignore small wins will bring about completely different results in our life.
③When we choose to value small wins and take the time to celebrate each one, we start a positive cycle (循环). A basketball player who raises his fist (拳头) after a successful shot isn’t just showing his excitement. At this moment, his brain thinks, “I did it!” He feels happy about winning. The good feeling stays with him, and next time he will be ready to try harder and fight for the ball. A student who rewards (奖励) himself with a cup of hot drink after finishing a study task is doing the same thing. Over time, our minds form a pattern (模式): ▲ .
④However, if we ignore small wins and stop celebrating them, we will break this positive cycle and focus on failures instead. This often leads to giving up. For example, if a person who wants to get fit only cares about losing 10 kilograms in a month, and never celebrates small things like exercising for 30 minutes, he will easily feel discouraged and even want to quit the fitness plan.
⑤So how can we make use of the power of small wins in daily life? First, break big goals into small tasks. Instead of planning to write a whole book, try to write 300 words a day and celebrate when you finish. Second, keep a notebook to record all your small wins. Third, reward yourself with something small, like a short walk or a piece of your favorite snack.
⑥Celebrate every small win, and you will make success a habit.
16. Which sentence uses “boost” with the same meaning and use as the underlined word?
boost /buːst/ v.
A. Your kind words are such a great boost to my self-confidence.
B. The new theme park will bring a boost to the local business.
C. The thief was caught boosting a phone from the department store.
D. This activity will greatly boost our interest in English learning.
17. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?
A. small rewards→small wins→small tasks
B. small wins→positive feelings→more efforts
C. big goals→unavoidable mistakes→bad feelings
D. more efforts→growing confidence→great success
18. What is the relationship between Paragraph② and Paragraph③?
A. Paragraph③ uses positive examples to explain the idea in Paragraph②.
B. Paragraph③ shows the bad results of following the idea in Paragraph②.
C. Paragraph③ tells us how to carry out the idea in Paragraph② as rules.
D. Paragraph③ talks about a new idea that has nothing to do with Paragraph②.
19. Which of the following shows the student uses the “small wins” idea?
A. Ben decides to finish his math workbook just in one day without having any rest.
B. Sam still feels sad about his bad test grades though he has done better than before.
C. Emily makes a 3-step plan for her project and rests for 10 minutes after each step.
D. Cindy asks her mom to buy her a big gift if she can finish her homework on time.
20. What is the main idea of the whole passage?
A. It is necessary to set big goals in our daily life.
B. Bad habits will stop us from achieving our dreams.
C. Different people have different ways to celebrate big victories.
D. Celebrating small wins can bring us many benefits and lead to success.

Today, a kind of animal is an endangered species (物种). This means there are very few animals of that kind left on Earth. The animals could face extinction. 26 When a type of animal is extinct, it is gone forever.
One problem for animals is that their living places are sometimes destroyed by humans. As human populations increase, more and more space is needed. Building houses for people to live in forces animals to leave their natural homes. Trees are cut down to make room for homes and businesses. Swamps (沼泽) are filled in so that neighborhoods can expand (扩展). The living places are destroyed. The animals have nowhere else to go. 27
Humans must stop the extinction of animals because of the loss of their living places. We have to learn more about animal populations when considering building things. Other choices may not be so convenient.
28 Better planning can make a difference. It is still possible to keep so many kinds of animals for future children to enjoy.
Another major problem is overhunting by humans. 29 The governments of countries around the world must agree on laws about protecting animals. Some animals may have large enough populations so hunting will not put them in danger. Others must be protected.
30 Some organizations are working hard to create living places for them. Breeding (繁殖) programs are helping animal populations increase. We all have to know the problem and think before we act. The things we do can have an effect on more than just ourselves.
A. This is a worldwide problem.
B. Extinction is when all the animals of that kind die.
C. However, they can be helpful to the lovely animals.
D. It is important for animals to have enough food to eat.
E. There is still hope for animals on the endangered species list.
F. Without a living place, the number of animals begins to go down.

根据第一段 “We set sail on the 20th of June, 1702.”(我们于 1702 年 6 月 20 日扬帆起航)、ship、voyage 等关键词可知,作者是乘船出海冒险。
根据第一段 “Then the captain was sick and we had to spend the winter there.” 故选 A。

根据“When we realize every tiny bit of progress we make and value it, it will boost our motivation and bring us joy.” 又因“This activity will greatly boost our interest in English learning.”
根据“In fact, our choice to value or ignore small wins will bring about completely different results in our life.”及“When we choose to value small wins and take the time to celebrate each one, we start a positive cycle.”

根据“First, break big goals into small tasks. Instead of planning to write a whole book, try to write 300 words a day and celebrate when you finish. Second, keep a notebook to record all your small wins. Third, reward yourself with something small, like a short walk or a piece of your favorite snack.”

Do you remember the useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right” in English learning? They carry more 1 than the words themselves. In Chinese culture, we also have lots of similar useful expressions like “drinking ink ” and “An inch of time is worth an inch of gold”.
“Drinking ink” is a common expression to show that a person is 2 . Is there anyone who really drinks ink? It could be true in Chinese history. During the Northern Qi Dynasty, those who 3 very badly in the exam would be punished by drinking one liter (升) of ink. Even if they were found to have poor handwriting or make up something terrible, they would be taken into a special room to drink ink. The rule was accepted by the following dynasties. Nowadays, this expression is 4 used to describe people’s ways of receiving education or their level of education. For example, “drinking foreign ink” means one has studied overseas. “Drinking little ink” means a 5 level of education.

“An inch of time is worth an inch of gold” means that an inch of time has the same value as an inch of gold. It is also the first half of a famous old saying, “An inch of time is worth an inch of gold, but an inch of time cannot be bought with an inch of gold”. This wise saying teaches us a clear lesson: time is more valuable than __6___, which is also echoed by another popular proverb “Lost time is never found again”. It also gives us a ___7___ against wasting it, we should ____8___ it in our daily life.
In ancient times, time was measured by inches because people used the sundial as a traditional time-keeping tool. It is made of a flat and round stone or metal plate on which clear time degrees are marked. As the sun moves slowly from rising to setting, the shadow length changes accordingly. This is how the sundial tells time. Such old tools___9____us to time is very priceless.

A
Two months after I returned home from my voyage to Lilliput(小人国), I was ready to set off again.
11. How did the writer go on his adventure?

B. They found fresh water both in the sea and on the land.
C. The writer wanted to join them to look for some fresh water.
D. The water was not deep enough for the ship to reach the land.
14. What might the “giant creature” be?
A. A human being. B. A tall soldier. C. Another captain. D. The writer’s friend.
15. What would probably happen next in the story?
A. The captain sent more men to find water.
B. Their ship broke and had to be repaired.
