Six months earlier,as I was warming up for a workout, the trainer at my gym
announced that she was signing up for the Mud Girl Run-a 5-kilometre obstacle()
race for women that raises money for breast cancer research. Then she asked if anyone
wanted to join her team.My immediate reaction was to lower my head and pretend I had
heard nothing. It didn't work.Seeing me keep my head down, she looked straight at me and
said,"Didn't you just tell me you were writing a book about stepping out of your comfort
.zone and saying yes to new opportunities?"She had a point.I couldn't say no,so I decided
to take part in the Mud Girl Run.
In the weeks that followed,I watched videos of the race to prepare myself for what lay
ahead.Seventeen obstacles.All of them in mud.Crawling,climbing,slipping,
balancing-every challenge looked messier than the last.Thankfully, participants who
couldn't complete an obstacle were allowed to take an easier route around it.Knowing that
there was an escape route put me a little more at ease.

When race day finally arrived,I woke up early, still nervous but also excited. However,
the moment I arrived at the venue, something changed. The air was filled with music,
laughter, and announcements about the start times.Women around me wore bright colours,
costumes, and funny decorations,as if getting muddy was part of the fun.Their excitement
spread to me,and little by little,my nervousness turned into excitement.
As the race began,I made a promise to myself:I would at least try every obstacle
because I did not want to have any regrets when it was over.Besides,I told myself this was
probably something I would only do once.
But I was completely wrong to think that was the end of it.Not only did I conquer
every obstacle, but I was actually smiling and having fun while doing it,even though I was a
complete muddy mess.I was soaked ()exhausted,and covered from head to toe in mud-

finished-I was already searching for other events in my area. After all,my shees were

One afternoon in January 2024,off the island of Dominica in the Atlantic Ocean,a
sperm whale named Pinchy and I drifted calmly at the surface of the water,
examining each other. After several minutes,Pinchy took a long breath, pointed her head
downward and slowly began to dive into the ocean
I wondered what Pinchy might tell me if I could understand what she was saying. My
team and I have been able to recognise that sperm whales have their own alphabet. At a time
when living in a technology-fuelled civilization may make us humans feel more distant from
the natural world, this discovery helps me feel more connected to it.
Paradoxically(矛盾地;相反地),thaf's been made possible thanks to the use of
technology itself, especially AI What I've come to know is that technology and nature do
not exist in a zero-sum universe where the rise of one side is the downfall of the other.
Instead, these tools can give humans an opportunity to feel more connected to the plants and
animals that surround us.
In a pilot study, the AI system we trained on the data was able to predict the type of
whale call, the whale's vocal (group, and even the individual whale with over 90
per cent accuracy. We then realised that it might be possible to use AI to analyse much larger
bodies of whale vocal data, identify patterns within them, and eventually interpret aspects of
what whales communicate to one another. This led to the creation of Project CETI(Cetacean
Translation Initiative),a multidisciplinary team of more than 50 marine biologists,AI
experts, roboticists, linguists, and researchers from related fields working to listen to and
decode (the communication of sperm whales.
Altogether, these findings are leading us to an extraordinary conclusion:Whales may
possess a communication system more complicated than our own,one that possibly predates
(先于…建成)human language by tens of millions of years.

Many conservationists see technology as a force of extraction and destruction, while
many technologists see nature as something to be modelled or optimised.I believe these
worlds are not at odds, and when used together carefully, technology holds the potential to
deepen humans'connection to nature. To me,this is the real potential promise of AI:not to
make us faster or more efficient, but to make us wiser.

A.To report a fieldwork routine.
B.To compare two living habits.
C.To praise whales'calm behavior.

A.warn nature will die out
B.prove it damages nature
C.argue we need modern life

B.Linguists'demand for research from different fields.

阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
From Jan 16 to 23,a group of high school students worked with a youth media
platform to create a short English play called The Taste of Tariffs ()Through the
project, they not only explored a global issue, but also learned an important lesson about
teamwork.
The idea came from a newspaper article about tariffs. The students found the topic
fresh and meaningful, and during a study trip they continued discussing it on a high-speed
train.Their excitement was so great that they even held auditions in the aisle.By the time
they arrived, the team had already been formed.
However,as rehearsals began, conflict soon arose ()Two students, who were
responsible for writing the script ()disagreed strongly about how the story should be
told. One wanted the play to focus on facts and logic so that it would sound serious and
convincing. The other believed that it should include more emotion and dramatic scenes to
attract the audience.Neither would give in.Their argument became so heated that rehearsal
had to stop, and the rest of the team sat in silence.
The disagreement affected everyone. Some students began to worry that the play would
fail.Others grew impatient because time was tight.Seeing the tension, the team leader
suggested that they stop arguing and listen to each other's ideas one by one. After a long
discussion, they finally realised that a good play needed both clear ideas and strong
storytelling. So they rewrote part of the script together, keeping the important facts while
adding more vivid dialogue and action.
Another problem arose on the filming day.Two actors were found unsuitable for-their
original roles. One of them felt unhappy when asked to change parts because he had
practised for days. But after the others explained the situation,he accepted the decision for
the good of the team.Everyone then worked quickly to adjust the lines and filming plan.

As our "From Page to Stage"event is approaching,I'd like to share my
recommendation for your reference.I strongly suggest we adapt A Dialogue benveen
Confucius and His Four Students, which we learned in our Chinese class at the
beginning of this semester. The reasons are as follows.
First and foremost, the text is easy to understand because we are already familiar with
it.Through the dialogue between Confucius and his four students,we can gain insight
into their educational ideas and understand the true meaning of education in the minds
of ancient sages. Its educational value is clear and impressive.
Secondly, with vivid plots and rich characters, this story perfectly fits our goal of
telling Chinese stories in English.Performing it can greatly improve our English skills
and help us spread traditional Chinese culture.Besides,in the course of adapting,
rehearsing and performing, our abilities in cooperation, communication and acting to
the public will be fully developed, which is highly beneficial to our personal growth.
Above are my suggestions.Simple as my words are,I hope we can hear more creative
ideas from all of you
