In Colombia, an environmental group is leading a project to save the wild areas in the San Lucas Mountains, with the invaluable assistance of local coffee growers. Since 2016, the areas around San Lucas have been in danger because gold miners and coca planters make more money than coffee farmers. To help out, a group called WebConserva has started a project to establish connections between local coffee farmers and a network of buyers across the nation. This plan is designed to not only enhance the market reach for the farmers’ produce but also to significantly increase their earnings. By doing this, WebConserva is creating a way for farmers to keep growing coffee, which in turn serves as a protective boundary around the forests, ensuring the preservation (保护) of the area’s rich biodiversity (生物多样性).
At present, 10 families are part of the project, growing coffee on 400 hectares (公顷) of land. WebConserva hopes that eventually, this number will grow to 200 families. If that happens, they could help save 20,000 hectares of forest that hasn’t been touched by humans. The families have promised not to cut down any trees to make more space for their crops or to hunt the animals that live there. In return, they get paid $300 when they sell 125 kilograms of coffee.
Arcadio Barajas is a testament (证明) to the project’s impact. His coffee farm sets up a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals live, thus reducing the possibility of conflict between cattle farmers and wild animals. “Cutting down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against my faith, and now I feel that growing coffee lets me be a good guardian of the land,” he said.
Amnobis Romero, once a coca grower and miner, has turned a new leaf. “Many families depended on illegal activities to support their children years ago. Now, we feel it a duty to look after this biodiversity and leave it for future generations,” he said.
People who care about nature want to make San Lucas a national park to keep it safe. But it’s taking a long time to make this happen. Carlos Valderrama, the person in charge of WebConserva, believes that their project can create a way of farming that will work well for many years to come. He said, “This project helps to keep the forests, all the different kinds of plants and animals, and the environment healthy, while also making life better for the people who grow coffee.”

Do you have memories from when you were a baby? Most of us don’t have them. This is called “infantile amnesia (童年失忆症)”. However, these memories are actually kept in the brain until we become adults, even though we aren’t aware of them.
Professor Cristina Alberini at New York University in the US found that the experiences learned in infancy are kept as hidden memories. It happens in a brain part called the hippocampus (海马体) when an infant’s brain is growing. Changes in brain chemicals help this process. Alberini conducted experiments on rats and found that boosting (促进,推动) certain chemicals later can bring back hidden memories. This shows that early memories aren’t lost but are kept.
In this case, “if the children are learning difficult situations in early childhood, their brains are going to be shaped based on that experience,” Alberini told The Guardian. Her study shows these hidden memories may influence people’s learning abilities throughout their lives and contribute to some mental health illnesses.
Although most of us can’t remember the things that happened to us when we were little, the age at which each person has their first memory can vary significantly.
Different backgrounds may explain the difference. Professor Wang Qi at Cornell University in the US has shown that the earliest memories of Americans date back to around 3.5 years of age, almost six months earlier than in Chinese people.
Wang said that this is because American people are more self-focused. However, in Asia, identity is more about the roles they play in society and relationships with others. So it may take more time for Asian babies to remember many details.
How often parents talk about past experiences with their children can also influence when first memories appear. New Zealand’s Maori people have their first memories as early as at the age of 2.5, The Guardian said.
Professor Elaine Reese from the University of Otago in New Zealand said it’s because the Maori culture values stories and deep conversations about past events. Conversations are key for keeping memories when kids can form mental images of the things that happened to them.
41. What did Professor Cristina Alberini discover about early memories?
A. They are stored and can be awakened. B. They are removed by brain chemicals.
C. They disappear as we grow older. D. They are lost in infancy.
42. According to Alberini, how do early childhood experiences influence people?
A. They have no lasting effect on people.
B. They contribute to the growth of the hippocampus.
C. They shape the brain and could affect mental health.
D. They play a part in developing interests and hobbies.
43. Why do Americans have earlier first memories compared to Chinese people?
A. They have a special brain structure. B. They value relationships more.
C They are more self-focused. D. They experience less stress.
44. What does the case of Maori people’s first memories at the age of 2.5 show?
A. Telling old stories helps keep memories. B. Maori people have the best memory abilities.
C. Telling stories is a good way to spread culture. D. Maori people experience more events in infancy.
45. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Total forgetting of infant memories. B. Parental influence on early memories.
C. Cultural differences in first memories. D. Hidden yet influential childhood memories.
【答案】41. A 42. C 43. C 44. A 45. D

2.本卷共6小题,共25分。
第四部分 写作(共两节,满分25分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When American Roy Austin began his first trip to Kenya in 2018, he hoped to see wild animals up close. While he achieved this dream, the journey became far more meaningful. It not only connected him with Africa’s wildlife but also inspired a deeper mission — transforming his own life and improving education for thousands of African schoolchildren.
During his travels across East Africa, Roy met people in rural Kenya who showed incredible determination — especially the students and teachers at Amboseli Primary School. Walking through the village, he saw children studying under the trees, sharing a single pencil. Their “library” was just a few old, torn textbooks. “We walk miles barefoot (赤脚的) to class,” one student said, “but our classrooms are ruined mud houses.”
Even without proper school supplies, the children’s enthusiasm and hope amazed Roy. They, along with their teachers and parents had built their own schools with whatever they could find, turning broken bricks and sticks into classrooms. “Books feel like treasure to us,” a girl told him. Her words made Roy realize: These kids weren’t just going through hardship — they were fighting for every chance to learn.
After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So, he started the organization — Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa.
Looking back on his journey, Roy shared his advice for would-be change makers: “Start small but dream big. That first box of books felt insignificant — until I saw children crying with joy over receiving their first storybook. It was a moment that changed everything for me.”
As Libraries for Kids International expands to Tanzania, Roy reflects: “I came for lions, but found my purpose in children’s smiles when they turn a book’s pages. That’s the real African miracle.”

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m sorry to hear about your troubles as the Cleaning Duty Group Leader. I can understand why you feel unfair and frustrated — it’s tough when a team member like Ben avoids duties to play basketball.
To improve this, I suggest focusing on communication and teamwork. Talk to Ben privately in a friendly way. Explain how his actions affect the group and ask him to share his ideas for a fair solution. If needed, involve your teacher or other members to discuss a duty schedule together.
Remember, staying positive helps solve problems. See this as a chance to grow leadership skills. Maybe assign specific tasks to each member to balance the work. Things will get better if you take small steps!
Yours,
Li Jin

36. What does the WebConserva project aim to achieve in the San Lucas Mountains?
A To encourage hunting to support local farmers.
B. To increase the mining and coca farming industries.
C. To link local coffee growers with buyers nationwide.
D To promote cutting down trees for coffee farming space.
37. What is a requirement for coffee growers to earn money from the WebConserva project?
A. Stopping cattle farming near forests. B. Preventing wildlife harm and tree cutting.
C. Changing to organic coffee within one year. D. Donating 10% of their land to national parks.
38. How does WebConserva protect wild areas in San Lucas?
A. By expanding cattle farms. B. By replacing forests with coffee farms.
C. By building physical fences around forests. D. By supporting coffee farming as a protection tool.
39. Why does the author mention Arcadio Barajas and Arnobis Romero?
A. To explain the government’s slow action.
B. To show coffee farming is more profitable than coca.
C. To prove all farmers have abandoned illegal activities.
D. To illustrate how the project transformed farmers’ attitudes.
40. What can we conclude from the passage?
A. Families protecting wildlife will get very rich.
B. WebConserva benefits ecosystems and local people’s life.
C. Gold mining and coca farming have been replaced rapidly.
D. San Lucas will develop into a national park in the near future.
