You either have a sense of humor, or you don't. That is what many people believe. But is humor really something you are simply born with, or can it be developed?
Generally speaking, it is the ability to find things funny and to make others laugh. It is a wonderful quality that helps us deal with stress and brings joy to others.
But why can some people easily tell jokes that make everyone laugh, while others find it difficult to do so?Scientists say humor is not as simple as people think and it is not fully understood how it works.
One explanation is that people with a good sense of humor have simply practiced it more. A recent study suggests that humor may be developed more by environment than by genes. If children grow up in serious homes or are seldom encouraged to laugh and play, they may never fully develop this skill. So, parents and teachers should try to create a happy environment, because laughter is the best medicine for a healthy life.

Among the most famous traditional Chinese paintings, there’s a very long handscroll of horses titled One Hundred Horses. To many people’s surprise, it was painted not by a Chinese artist but by an Italian named Giuseppe Castiglione.
Castiglio ne was better known in China by his Chinese name, Lang Shining (郎世宁). He was born in 1688 in Milan, Italy. In 1715, he traveled to Beijing. With experience as a muralist (壁画师), he was invited to work as a court artist.
Seven years later, Emperor Yongzheng came to power. By then, Castiglio ne had already made a name for himself. He was famous for a special style that joined Western and Chinese painting methods. In 1724, Yongzheng asked him to paint One Hundred Horses, a silk handscroll nearly eight meters long.
Painting on silk is no easy task. Once a stroke (笔画) is placed, there is no going back. Castiglio ne first practiced on paper. After carefully planning every detail, he copied the design onto silk, stroke by stroke.
It took Castiglio ne four years to finish the painting. There is no record of how Emperor Yongzheng viewed it. But the following emperor, Qianlong, was deeply impressed and called the painting a masterpiece.
As its title suggests, One Hundred Horses shows about 100 horses in all kinds of poses (姿势). Some stand quietly, while others run, walk, drink water, roll on the ground or even fight. The painting’s large size alone is enough to fascinate most viewers. A closer look, however, may amaze you further. Castiglione skillfully combined Western realism with Chinese brushwork. The trees, horses and people appear lifelike, yet they were all painted with a Chinese brush.
In One Hundred Horses, humans and nature live side by side in peace, and so do Eastern and Western aesthetics (美学). Perhaps this perfect balance is why Emperor Qianlong liked it so much.
48. What do we know about Giuseppe Castiglione?
A. He was born in Italy but studied art in China.

(After his mother married again, Jack had a stepsister. They did not get along. But he had his toy pig. It always made him feel better when he was sad.)
Scene One
On a cold Christmas Eve, Jack sat in the back of the car with his stepsister, Holly. On his lap rested Dur Pig (DP), his most beloved toy.
“Can I hold it?” Holly asked suddenly.
Before Jack could refuse, she took DP from him. “Give him back!” Jack shouted.
Holly rolled down the window. “Then catch!” With a cruel laugh, she threw DP out into the dark.
“NO!” Jack cried, but the car kept moving. DP was gone.
Scene Two
Later that night, Jack’s mother placed a new pig toy on his bed. “It’s your Christmas present,” she said. “I don’t want him,” Jack said coldly, turning away. “He’s not DP.”
That night, Jack woke to a strange voice. “Jack?” a small voice said.
Jack sat up. The new pig, Christmas Pig (CP), was looking at him with bright, hopeful eyes. “We can find DP. Come with me to the Land of the Lost,” CP said. “We can bring DP back.”
Jack stared in disbelief and then followed.
Scene Three
After a dangerous journey through the Land of the Lost, Jack and CP were caught by the King.
“You want your DP back?” the King said. “A lost thing can only return to its owner if it remains whole. But your DP was run over by a car. He’s broken into pieces. He belongs to me now.”
Guards moved to catch them. Suddenly, an angel (天使) named Hope swept down and carried them to safety. “Go to the Island of the Beloved,” she told Jack. “You can find DP there.”
Scene Four
Jack finally found DP. He hugged him tightly. But CP had been taken away by the king.
“Listen to me, Jack,” DP told Jack. “You can only take one of us back. That’s the rule. CP went out of his way to help you look for me, all because he wanted to make you happy. He was ready to give himself up to save me. He loves you just as much as I do. You have to choose him.”
“No!” Jack cried. “I came here for you!”
“On this island, I will feel your love forever,” DP said softly. “But CP. he needs you. And if you’re honest with yourself- you need him, too. Go and save him!”

Have you ever wondered what music looks like? For most of us, music is something we only hear. However, there is a condition called synesthesia (联觉). For people with this condition, their senses are linked in a unique way. For example, hearing a certain note might cause them to see colors in their minds.
Inspired by this condition, the famous engineer and content creator He Shijie decided to turn this invisible (看不见的) magic into reality. He wanted to build a magical piano that could show music as bursts of light.
The journey to success was not easy. He and his team spent three years trying different ideas and building four different prototypes (原型). They tried smoke machines, and even water tanks (水箱) filled with paint to find the best effect. At one point, the project almost failed because of technical problems, but he refused to give up. He eventually realized that the solution he needed was provided by nature: bioluminescent algae (发光藻).
These little algae have a natural power to shine with a beautiful blue light when they are moved by waves or touch. To use this power, the team built a special tank filled with these algae and connected it to the piano. When a player hits the keys, the piano lets out air bubbles (气泡). These bubbles wake up the algae, making them shine up to the surface.
He named his invention the “Blue Tears Piano.” To show the final result, he performed the song Time Travel from the movie Secret. As the music played, the blue light danced like stars in the dark.
In a world where technology often distances us from nature, the Blue Tears Piano reminds us that the most magical inventions aren’t built against nature, but with it.
56. Which of the following is an example of synesthesia?
A. Seeing red and tasting strawberries in your mouth.
B. Hearing a song and remembering your mother.
C. Eating cake and feeling it is delicious.
D. Touching a cat and feeling it is soft.

A. He built two different kinds of prototypes.
B. The project almost failed because of money problems.
C. The team spent four years trying different ideas.
D. He finally found the answer in nature.
58. How do the algae create light when the piano is played?
A. The piano keys shine directly on them.
B. The sound of music wakes them up.
C. Air bubbles from the piano move them.
D. The player touches the water.
59. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. A special piano that connects music with natural light.
B. An introduction to inventions made in nature.
C. The use of natural algae in modern inventions.
D. Hard work and effort lead to success.

In a busy community hall, a volunteer sits at a sewing (缝纫) machine, fixing someone’s much-loved dress, while at another table, household tools are fixed. This is the Share and Repair Café, run by a group called Transition Crich in a village in the UK.
This effort began five years ago, when an advertisement in the local magazine asked if anyone was interested in coming together to make their village greener and better. Once Transition Crich was set up, it joined the international Transition Network made up of groups that focus on local and community-led actions.
Importantly, the group doesn’t charge (收费) for its service. “You don’t have to pay for your repairs,” says committee member Linda. “People can come to the café and have the food and drinks for free if they want — we just suggest making a donation (捐赠) because of our daily costs.”
Clare volunteers with her husband. “I’m very worried about the climate problem, and know that huge amounts of clothes are thrown away unnecessarily,” Clare explains. “I have skills to avoid landfill (填埋).” She’s part of the sewing team, fixing clothes, bags — anything made of cloth.
Clare’s worries are not without reason. In the U. K., most of the plastic is still burned, landfilled, or littered. Fast fashion is another big problem; according to business waste.co.uk, the world produces.92. million tons of clothing waste every year. Fixing items like broken toys or torn clothing can help reduce this.
Whether a volunteer or a visitor, people in the community benefit greatly from being involved with Transition Crich. Studies showed that 7.2% of U. K. adults “often or always” felt lonely in 2021, with studies showing that loneliness is related to anxiety and high blood pressure. In this way, the café repairs not just objects, but also something more important.

How do you usually use AI? Most students open Deepseek, type a question, get an answer, and close it. Done. But Conor Grennan, an Al expert from New York University, points out this is wrong. “Most people treat AI as a search engine (搜索引擎),” Grennan explains, “But AI is much more powerful than that. It should be your thinking partner.”
How are they different? Grennan gives an example. When you search for a hotel the “Google way”, you just get a list of nearby places. However, if you share what you like to do and what your habits are, you will get a totally different result. AI will recommend hotels that fit your needs — maybe a quiet place if you love reading, or one close to the subway if you need to travel around the city.
However, AI isn’t a perfect friend from the start. To make it better, Grennan gives some practical suggestions. First, a good friend is kind, but AI is sometimes too nice — AI says “Great idea!” to everything, which can be a problem. So instead of letting AI only praise you, you can ask questions like “What problems do you see in my ideas?” and “What are your doubts about my ideas?” What’s more, good friends know you well. You can discuss your opinions with AI, and ask it to give examples to support them. In this way, AI can think with you, not for you.
In the end, AI can be your English conversation partner or your brainstorming friend for projects. The key is simple: don’t “ask” it — have conversations with it in an active way.
Most people regard AI as a search engine. However, AI expert Conor Grennan argues that we should 74 . He uses an example to 75 : traditional search only offers a list of hotels, while AI can recommend suitable hotels with our likes and habits.
