Jimmy Chin is a world-famous Chinese-American filmmaker, mountaineer, and photographer, who recorded the free solo climb of the 101-story Taipei 101 building in Taiwan. Although his parents disagreed with his dangerous hobbies, Jimmy Chin never gave up following his dream of adventure.
Today we are glad to invite him to share his stories.
Q: Between your parents’ expectations and society’s ideas, there was a clear picture of what life was supposed to be. How did you break away from that?
A: I knew if I was going to climb, I had to take it as far as I could. In 1999, I organized an expedition (远征) to the Charakusa Valley in Pakistan. That trip still stands as one of the greatest adventures of my life. You can never exactly re-create that first expedition — the pure, total sense of adventure. But every new trip feels like I’m still chasing (追逐) that feeling.
Q: How do you deal with fear in dangerous situations?
A: Fear is like a two-sided knife. It can keep you alive, but it can also stop you from moving at all. I’ve learned to listen to my fear, but not to let it control me. When I’m in a dangerous situation, I focus on the task at hand. I break it down into small, manageable steps. I don’t think about the big picture. I just think about the next move, the next hold, the next breath. That’s how you get through it.
Q: What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken in your life?
A: The riskiest thing I’ve ever done was deciding to follow my dream. That dream means taking photos and making movies about the thing I love most: adventure. I’ve skied down Everest, climbed the Shark’s Fin on Meru, and free soloed in Yosemite. But the biggest risk was choosing to do this for a living — walking away from the expected path, and trying to make a life out of something that most people would consider crazy.
Thank you very much for sharing your inspiring stories and thoughts with us today.
48. What can we learn about Jimmy Chin from the first paragraph?
A. He was born in Taiwan.
B. His parents didn’t want him to do anything risky.
C. He worked in Taipei.
D. He gave up his dream because of his parents.
49. Why does Jimmy mention the 1999 expedition to Pakistan?
A. To show it was the most dangerous trip.
B. To warn others about the risk of mountain climbing.
C. To show it was a special and meaningful adventure for him.
D. To introduce how to organize an expedition.
50. Which of the following is TRUE about Jimmy according to his answers?
A. Jimmy has completely overcome fear and become fearless.
B. Jimmy gave up the safe and expected life path to follow his dream.
C. Jimmy thinks skiing down Everest is the riskiest thing he has done.
D. Jimmy deals with danger by focusing on the final result of the task.
51. What is the main idea of Jimmy’s stories shared in the interview?
A. It’s important to stick to one’s dream though there are difficulties.
B. How to deal with fear when people are in dangerous situations.
C. The most famous trips in the history of mountain climbing.
D. The differences between Chinese and American school education.

(Adapted from Number the Stars by Lois Lowry): During World War II, ten-year-old Annemarie was helping her Jewish friend hide from German soldiers. Tonight she must walk through dark woods with a secret basket...
That night, after Ellen was asleep, Annemarie tiptoed to the window and looked down to the street. There was no one there. She went to the kitchen and took the basket her mother had prepared. It was heavy. She lifted it and walked quietly out of the apartment, down the stairs, and into the dark.
The path through the woods was rough. Roots caught at her shoes, and branches scratched her arms. Somewhere in the darkness, she heard a twig snap. She stopped, her heart pounding. A soldier? An animal? She remembered what her uncle Henrik had said: “When you are scared, think of Little Red Riding-Hood in the forest, and hold your basket tightly.”
She walked on. The basket seemed to grow heavier with each step. She thought of Ellen, asleep back at the farmhouse, and of her sister Kirsti, who believed this was all an exciting game. She thought of her father, somewhere in the city, and of her mother, who had fallen and hurt her ankle (脚踝) on this same path just hours before.
Suddenly, she saw the light of a flashlight ahead. A soldier stepped onto the path. He pointed the light directly into her eyes.
“What are you doing here little girl?” he asked in Danish, but his accent (口音) was German.
Annemarie swallowed. She made her voice light and careless, like Kirsti’s. “I’m taking lunch to my uncle,” she said. “He’s a fisherman. The basket is very heavy.”
The soldier shone his light into the basket. Annemarie saw what he saw: bread, cheese, an apple-and hidden beneath them, the handkerchief (手帕) that her mother had packed with a strange, strong smell. She did not know what it was for, but she knew it was important.
The soldier wrinkled his nose at the smell. He stepped back and waved her on. “Go then,” he said. “And be quick about it.”
Annemarie walked past him, her legs trembling but her face still calm. She did not look back. She knew that inside the basket, beneath the ordinary food, was something that could save lives.

①CNPC (China National Petroleum Corporation) recently announced that it has finished drilling (钻井) Shenditake-1, the deepest vertical well in Asia. Located in the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang’s Tarim Basin, this well reaches 10,910 meters deep and is an important scientific exploration project for China’s deep-Earth research.
②Drilling such a deep well is extremely difficult. An expert from CNPC says that it is like drilling through Mount Qomolangma and then going down another 2 kilometers underground. The whole process is full of great risks and challenges, especially for workers and equipment in the harsh desert environment.
③The drilling work started on May 30, 2023. It took only 279 days to reach 10,000 meters, but the final 910 meters took as long as 300 days. This is because the challenges became bigger and bigger as the well went deeper. Besides, the Taklimakan Desert has a huge temperature difference of over 80°C between summer and winter, which is a great test for workers’ bodies and minds.
④The conditions under the ground are even worse. At the bottom of the well, the temperature can reach 220°C and the pressure is as high as 145 mega-pascals. These extreme conditions make common drilling tools unable to work. In addition, the drilling equipment is very heavy, which may easily break the drill pipes and bring more difficulties to the work.
⑤To solve these problems, CNPC developed new high-tech equipment on its own. The most important one is the world’s first 12,000-meter automated drilling rig, which is specially designed for ultra-deep well drilling.
⑥CNPC also created a set of advanced tools for ultra-deep well detection (探测). With the help of these new technologies, Shenditake-1 successfully went through 12 geological layers and found oil-and-gas-rich rocks between 10,851 and 10,910 meters deep, achieving great progress in ultra-deep drilling technology.
⑦As the world’s second-deepest vertical well, Shenditake-1 is very meaningful. It helps China explore more ultra-deep oil and gas resources and shows that China’s ability in deep-Earth exploration is getting stronger. This achievement is very important for China’s energy security and the future development of ultra-deep resource exploration.
56. Why does the expert mention “drilling through Mount Qomolangma” in Para. 2?
A. To state that Mount Qomolangma is very high.
B. To suggest that the workers are as brave as mountain climbers.
C. To show the great difficulty of drilling Shenditake-1.
D. To introduce the location of the well.
57. Which of the following pictures may show the drilling process?
A. B.
C. D.

Zhang Wei used to be such a student. He easily became angry or sad because of small things in daily life. He felt upset and impatient for no reason. Instead of keeping calm and communicating with others, he lost his temper (脾气) with his family and classmates. He worried that no one could understand him and he often felt lonely. Most importantly, talk to parents and teachers when feeling upset and helpless. Their encouragement can help teenagers face problems bravely and believe in themselves. Step by step, happy smiles will be seen on their faces again.
Life is full of beauty and hope. Everyone should learn to deal with negative feelings. Teenagers should stay positive (积极的), enjoy the present moment and this will enable them a healthy and happy growth through the teenage life.
