Maya Ganesh’s passion for environmental restoration can be traced back to 1995, when she had just graduated from university and discovered her interest in environmental economics, which, at the time, was not seen as profitable. So, owing to family pressure, she couldn’t pursue her dream and ended up with a business career, but her passion for it remained.
It was her mother’s encouragement that brought a turning point. “When I was 38, she said, ‘Why don’t you do it now?’” Maya recalls. Initially hesitant about starting from zero, she eventually pursued a Master’s in Environment and Sustainable Development in the UK.
Inspired by London’s Allotment System, where residents could grow their food on government-assigned plots, Maya devoted herself to community-driven sustainable initiatives in East London. In 2016, she walked into Headmaster’s office of a global school to suggest the idea of a school garden as an interdisciplinary (跨学科的) learning space. Maya suggested they should not do any landscaping in the school but let her create a school garden instead. The project was designed as a sparetime course, where students could learn about organic farming — what Maya refers to as “regenerative agriculture”.
“We started with Grade 7,” Maya recalls. “Starting from scratch was a lot of work, but with some labour, the garden began to take shape. By July 2018, students had created two forest patches, digging pits, adding biomass, and planting diverse crops. Years later, these students are seeing the fruits of their work.”
The activity is now open to students from kindergarten to Grade 12. Maya educates the students on the importance of preserving traditional varieties through seed saving, ensuring they understand the value of biodiversity. Since 2019, the garden has expanded, and the project has also become financially self-supplying.
Students harvest crops as part of their classes. Maya emphasizes that the garden is not a production unit but a learning space. The kids take home some of the produce, and the mothers are happy. They sell the spare produce to the school and the community, allowing the garden to fund its tools and resources. This model not only engages the students but also fosters a sense of responsibility and appreciation for sustainable practices.
24.What caused Maya to pick up her dream again?
A.The pressure from her mother.
B.The success of her business career.
C.The support from her family.
D.The potential of environmental economics.
25.What can we learn about Maya’s “regenerative agriculture”?
A.It is part of London’s Allotment System.
B.It is a project funded by the government.
C.It is intended to be a formal school course.
D.It introduces students to organic farming.
26.What does Maya focus on while carrying out her program?
A.The expansion of the garden. B.The importance of tradition.
C.The harvest of the crops. D.The awareness of sustainability.
27.Which words can best describe Maya?
A.Passionate and generous. B.Innovative and committed.
C.Honest and considerate. D.Selfless and tolerant.
C
We started in 1993 with a simple idea that people could help each other by sharing stories about their lives. For years people had told our founders, motivational speakers Jack and Mark, inspiring stories about themselves. Jack and Mark included these stories in their talks, and their audience repeatedly asked if they had ever been published. “That story about the boy and the puppy — is that in a book anywhere?” a parent asked Jack. “That story about the boy with the amputated (截肢) leg who became a tennis star, I need to read that to my staff,” a manager told him. Jack was asked repeatedly, “Is that story in a book anywhere?”
Eventually, Jack and Mark decided their audience must be on to something, so they collected the best 101 stories they’d been told in a book. They called it Chicken Soup for the Soul because they wanted it to provide comfort, just like their grandmothers’ cooking.
They took the book to New York, hoping to sell it to one of the big publishers, but every single one turned them down. The project appeared to have stalled until they met Peter Vegso, the owner of a small health and wellness publisher in Florida named HCI. Peter read some of the stories and loved them, so he decided to give the book a chance, becoming Chicken Soup for the Soul’s founding publisher.
Never, in Jack and Mark’s wildest dreams, had they imagined what the book would become. Chicken Soup for the Soul turned into one of the most popular books ever published, selling 11 million copies around the world. Readers asked for more stories so we published a “second helping” of Chicken Soup for the Soul and a third after that. Today, we’ve published more than 250 books, which have become the best-selling trade paperback book series of all time.
28.What drove Jack and Mark to publish these inspiring stories?
A.The rich source of good stories. B.The good chance to be famous.
C.The demand of the audience. D.The benefits from the book.
29.How did the title of the book come from?
A.The way of cooking. B.The purpose of the book.
C.The taste of the chicken. D.The experiences of children.
30.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “stalled” in Paragraph 3?
A.Progressed. B.Explained. C.Succeeded. D.Stopped.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.An unexpected success of a book. B.An introduction to a publisher.
C.The wildest dreams of two people. D.People who buy a best seller.
D
Placed before you are two pots. Each contains 100 balls. You are given a clear description of the first pot’s contents, in which there are 50 red balls and 50 black balls. The economist running the experiment is tight-lipped about the second, saying only that there are 100 balls divided between red and black in some percentage. Then you are offered a choice. Pick a red ball from a pot and you will get a million dollars. Which pot would you like to pull from? Now try again, but select a black ball. Which pot this time? Most people choose the first pot both times, despite such a choice implying that there are both more and fewer red balls than in the second pot.
This fact is known as the Ellsberg paradox after Daniel Ellsberg, who called the behaviour hate uncertainty. It reveals a deeper problem facing the world as it struggles with climate change.
Ignorance of the future carries a cost today: uncertainty makes risks uninsurable, or at the very least expensive. The less insurers know about risks, the more capital they need to protect their balance-sheets against possible losses.
Insurance is a tool of climate adaptation. Indeed, insurance calculators have as big a role to play as activists in the fight against climate change. Without insurance, those whose homes burn in a wildfire or are destroyed by a flood will lose everything. Insurance can also be a motive for corrective action. Higher insurance expenses, which accurately reflect risk, stimulate people to adapt sooner, whether by discouraging building in risky areas or encouraging people to move away from high fire risk land. If prices are wrong, society will be more hurt by a hotter world than otherwise would be the case. Politicians considering financial aid for home insurance on flood plains ought to note.
32.The experiment of the two pots shows that ___________.
A.instinct sometimes works better than reasoning B.most people prefer predictability to uncertainty
C.people are willing to take risks to get a reward D.it is impossible to always make the right decision
33.What’s the functions of insurance?
A.It raises people’s awareness of climate change. B.It prevents people from taking risks.
C.It motivates people to adapt to risky environment. D.It helps climate refugees to relocate.
34.What’s author’s attitude towards financial aids for home insurance?
A.Opposing B.Supportive C.Uncertain D.Ambiguous
35.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Prevention is better than remedy B.Improving forecast can reduce uncertainty
C.Uncertainty pushes up the price of insurance D.Speedy action is urgently needed for climate change

Travelling with friends can be an amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could ruin your friendship. 36 Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible. 37 Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into “must-see”, “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.
Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling — from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane’s window seat. But sometimes things don’t go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. 38 At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.
Don’t disappear. When travelling with a group — or even just one other person — you may want some alone time. 39 It’s especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.
Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency. 40 Don’t respond to less important work contact or send messages frequently. After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!
A.Give each other some space.
B.Include at least one activity for everyone.
C.But other than that, try to stay off your phone.
D.And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.
E.That’s completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are.
F.Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.
G.So it’s important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.

My 12-year-old daughter is smart, even sharper than I was at her age, but she just wouldn’t pick up a chapter book for fun. School books were tough for her, and when it came to free time, she stuck to picture books and listened to “Harry Potter” audiobooks. None of these really got her into deep reading, where you stare at words on paper and let your imagination fly.
For a while, I had to face the truth: I hadn’t passed on the joy of reading to her. I tried telling her how reading makes life richer, but she shrugged (耸肩) and said, “Lots of my friends don’t like reading either. It’s no big deal.”
Things went worse when she got a smartphone last year. Suddenly, my lively child became lazy, always on her phone. I suggested other fun activities, but she just found theme “boring.” I still held out hope for reading, seeing it as a developmental escape. But the problem was that she chose the colorful, noisy world of her phone.
Then, right before we left for an 8-day holiday on a beautiful Greek island, we talked about reading again. “Novels are the best way to understand how people feel,” I told her. “I can learn more from social media,” she replied. I mentioned storytelling and history, and she said, “I can watch movies and use the internet.” I even promised to buy her any books she liked, but she smiled and said, “Mama, welcome to your dream.”
I realized I couldn’t win. She had good reasons and I couldn’t say she was wrong. Sure, reading opens up new worlds, but so does the whole internet. Still, deep down, I wished she’d experience the pure magic of reading—those special moments when an author says exactly what you’ve always felt but never knew how to express.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward.

Family Responsibility: Small Acts, Great Love
Dear teachers and friends,
As teenagers, we might think family responsibility is beyond us. But in reality, it starts with simple daily actions, small gestures that transform love into tangible acts.
Helping with chores, listening to grandparents’ stories, or sharing our day with parents may seem insignificant. Yet these moments, like seeds, grow into trust and connection. I realized this last winter while caring for my sick mother. While juggling school and her care, I understood: responsibility isn’t about perfection, but about presence.
Family is where we first learn accountability. Let’s honor this bond not just with words, but through consistent, compassionate action.
Thank you.

So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward. “If you finish one novel during this trip, I’ll buy you that art set you’ve been wanting,” I proposed, pointing to the book I’d secretly packed: The Secret Garden. To my surprise, she hesitated but agreed. The Greek island, with its limited Wi-Fi, became the perfect setting. With fewer digital distractions, she reluctantly picked up the book by the pool. Gradually, the vibrant descriptions of the garden and the resilient characters drew her in. By day three, I found her reading under an olive tree, completely absorbed, her phone forgotten beside her.
By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another. Her eyes sparkled as she discussed Mary’s transformation and the magic of the hidden garden. “Can I get A Wrinkle in Time next?” she asked. I smiled, overwhelmed with relief. Later, she even used her phone creatively—taking photos of scenic spots that reminded her of the story and sharing her reading journey online. Watching her connect literature to her world, I realized the true reward wasn’t just the art set; it was witnessing her discover the quiet magic of words, a joy no screen could replicate. Tears welled in my eyes—she’d finally felt what I could never fully explain.

Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received prepared me for the world I would be facing in the future,” he said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books.

根据第二段中的“It was her mother’s encouragement that brought a turning point. “When I was 38, she said, ‘Why don’t you do it now?’” Maya recalls. Initially hesitant about starting from zero, she eventually pursued a Master’s in Environment and Sustainable Development in the UK. (正是母亲的鼓励带来了转折点。“我38岁时,她问我‘你现在为什么不做呢?’”玛雅回忆道。最初她对从零开始犹豫不决,但最终还是在英国攻读了环境与可持续发展硕士学位)”可知,母亲的鼓励使Maya决定追求她的梦想,即家人的支持让玛雅重新拾起梦想。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The project was designed as a sparetime course, where students could learn about organic farming — what Maya refers to as “regenerative agriculture”. (这个项目是作为一门业余课程设计的,学生们可以在这里学习有机农业,也就是Maya所说的“再生农业”)”可知,Maya的“再生农业”是一门给学生介绍有机农业的课程。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Maya educates the students on the importance of preserving traditional varieties through seed saving, ensuring they understand the value of biodiversity. (玛雅通过种子保存教育学生保护传统品种的重要性,确保他们理解生物多样性的价值)”及最后一段中的“This model not only engages the students but also fosters a sense of responsibility and appreciation for sustainable practices. (这种模式不仅让学生参与其中,还培养了他们对可持续实践的责任感和认同感)”可知,玛雅在项目中关注可持续发展意识的培养。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Inspired by London’s Allotment System, where residents could grow their food on government-assigned plots, Maya devoted herself to community-driven sustainable initiatives in East London. (受伦敦分配系统(居民可在政府指定地块种植食物)的启发,玛雅致力于东伦敦社区驱动的可持续倡议)”及全文中玛雅坚持推动项目、从业余课程到跨学段参与的努力可知,她具有创新性(Innovative)且坚定投入(Committed)。故选B项。
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.D 31.A
根据文章第二段“Eventually, Jack and Mark decided their audience must be on to something, so they collected the best 101 stories they’d been told in a book. (最终,Jack和Mark觉得他们的听众肯定是察觉到了这些故事的价值,于是他们将收集到的101个最精彩的故事汇编成了一本书。)”可知,Jack和Mark最终决定出版这些故事是因为他们意识到观众对这些故事有需求,所以他们将收集到的101个最精彩的故事汇编成了一本书。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“They called it Chicken Soup for the Soul because they wanted it to provide comfort, just like their grandmothers’ cooking.(他们将这本书命名为《心灵鸡汤》,因为他们希望这本书能像祖母做的饭菜一样,给人带来慰藉。)”
根据文章第三段“The project appeared to have stalled until they met Peter Vegso, the owner of a small health and wellness publisher in Florida named HCI. Peter read some of the stories and loved them, so he decided to give the book a chance, becoming Chicken Soup for the Soul’s founding publisher.(这个项目似乎……,直到他们遇到了Peter Vegso,他是佛罗里达州一家名为HCI的小型健康养生出版社的老板。Peter读了一些故事后非常喜欢,于是决定给这本书一个机会,成为了《心灵鸡汤》的创始出版商。)”可推测,“stalled”出现在描述项目进展的语境中,且后面跟着“until they met Peter Vegso”,这表明在遇到Peter Vegso之前,项目处于某种停滞或未进展的状态。选项D“stopped”意为“停止”,与此相符。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“Never, in Jack and Mark’s wildest dreams, had they imagined what the book would become. Chicken Soup for the Soul turned into one of the most popular books ever published, selling 11 million copies around the world. Readers asked for more stories so we published a “second helping” of Chicken Soup for the Soul and a third after that. Today, we’ve published more than 250 books, which have become the best-selling trade paperback book series of all time.( Jack和Mark做梦也没想到这本书会取得如此巨大的成功。 故选A。
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.A 35.C
根据第一段“Placed before you are two pots. Most people choose the first pot both times, despite such a choice implying that there are both more and fewer red balls than in the second pot.(摆在你面前的是两个罐子。
根据最后一段中“Insurance is a tool of climate adaptation.(保险是适应气候变化的一种工具。)”以及“Without insurance, those whose homes burn in a wildfire or are destroyed by a flood will lose everything. Insurance can also be a motive for corrective action. Higher insurance expenses, which accurately reflect risk, stimulate people to adapt sooner, whether by discouraging building in risky areas or encouraging people to move away from high fire risk land.
根据最后一段中“Insurance can also be a motive for corrective action. Higher insurance expenses, which accurately reflect risk, stimulate people to adapt sooner, whether by discouraging building in risky areas or encouraging people to move away from high fire risk land. If prices are wrong, society will be more hurt by a hotter world than otherwise would be the case. Politicians considering financial aid for home insurance on flood plains ought to note.(保险也可以成为纠正措施的动机。 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第三段“Ignorance of the future carries a cost today: uncertainty makes risks uninsurable, or at the very least expensive. The less insurers know about risks, the more capital they need to protect their balance-sheets against possible losses.(对未来的无知带来了今天的代价:不确定性使风险无法投保,或者至少代价高昂。保险公司对风险的了解越少,他们就需要更多的资金来保护他们的资产负债表免受可能的损失。)”可知,文章通过埃尔斯伯格悖论阐述了全球日益变暖带来的风险与风险的不确定性如何推高保险价格;C选项“Uncertainty pushes up the price of insurance(不确定性推高了保险价格)”能够概括文章主旨,适合作为最佳标题。故选C。

【答案】36.G 37.B 38.F 39.E 40.C

Thank you.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I saw some very interesting models at a four s shop the other day. Would you come with me to look at a few? Now i'd love to, but I need to get home to cook dinner. Let's go this weekend after the company picnic. Okay, see you. Then i'm thinking of buying a new car this year. My old one has problems. Maybe I need to send IT to the repair shop. Leaving is in my yard, won't solve the problems. Why don't you get a bicycle instead? Not only will IT save you money, but you will get exercise as well.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward.
