It’s called khoomei (呼麦). Known as throat singing, it is an ancient way of singing that singers can make more than one sound at the same time. It creates beautiful sounds that remind us of winds and rivers. Practised in China, khoomei is a key part of Mongolian nomad (蒙古牧民) culture. It has been passed down from parents to children for a long time. It can copy nature’s sounds, showing a strong link to the beautiful grasslands. In 2009, UNESCO named it an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产), showing it is an important part of world culture. People work hard to keep it alive, especially as the world and cultures change. Khoomei used to be performed by older artists, but now more young people are taking an interest in it. The art has appeared in popular TV shows and movies, making it more famous. For example, the movie Ne Zha 2 uses this special sound when Tianyuan Ding appears. Also, young artists are mixing khoomei with modern sounds from jazz and electronic music. This helps khoomei change and grow while staying true to its roots (本质). These new styles have made khoomei popular with people of all ages. 21. Khoomei is a modern way of singing with more than one sound. 22. Khoomei mainly copies sounds from big cities and busy streets. 23. People make great efforts to keep khoomei alive as the world and cultures change. 24. B This year, many Chinese students got wonderful news — their first spring break! Wang Siyuan, an eight-year-old boy, was especially excited. On the first day of his holiday, he went to a science museum in Hefei with his parents. “It feels like we are walking in space!” he said cheerfully. Spring break usually comes around the Qingming Festival. This year, nearly 100 cities in China, such as Jiangsu, Anhui and Sichuan, have started giving students two or three days’ holiday. Schools encourage students to do outdoor activities, spend time with family and learn by doing. In Nanjing, kids can take nature walks or visit old cultural places. In Hefei, some students go to science museums to learn about new technologies. The idea first started in Hangzhou in 2004. It has become more popular since China’s “double reduction” policy (双减政策) made schoolwork lighter. Now, even some companies are helping. They give parents paid leave so families can travel together. Because of this, more and more people are booking trips. Museums, zoos and theme parks are very popular. Experts say spring trips now are more about having fun experiences than just sightseeing. As one teacher said, “This break helps students relax, learn outside class and grow happily. It also helps students reduce stress from schoolwork. With a clear mind, students can focus well when they return to class.” 31. How did Wang Siyuan feel about his first spring break? A. Bored and tired. B. Excited and happy. C. Interested but worried. C China is a world leader in wind energy, and now its scientists are taking this technology to the clouds. In January, a team from Tsinghua University and other research centers tested a huge floating (漂浮的) power station called SAWES in Sichuan Province. It is like a big balloon floating 2,000 meters high in the air, which is much higher than normal wind power stations. The new model of SAWES they tested is called the S2000. It is 60 meters long and has 12 smaller wind machines hanging from it. It stays in the sky with the help of a strong cable (电缆). The cable holds the station in place and sends electricity down to the ground. During the test, the station made enough power to run a house for nearly two weeks! Because it flies so high, it can catch stronger winds than traditional wind power stations. It is also better for nature because it uses fewer materials and doesn’t do harm to the environment. Experts say these floating power stations are great for faraway islands or places that are hit by natural disasters (灾害), because these stations are easy to move. They are also quieter and safer for birds. In the future, these stations might do more than just make power; they could help with charging (充电) mobile phones and other small tools or even improve the Internet. The team plans to test even larger models later this year to help provide more clean energy for everyone. 36. According to paragraph 1, what is SAWES? A. A high mountain. B. A research team. C. A kind of strong wind. D. A floating power station. 37. How does the S2000 model send electricity to the ground? A. Through the strong cable. B. Through the powerful wind. C. By moving quickly in the sky. D. By keeping it in the big balloon. 38. According to the experts, where are the “floating power stations” probably used? A. In big cities with heavy traffic. B. In large factories on the ground. C. In public schools or large hospitals. D. In faraway islands or disaster areas. 39. In which part of a newspaper can you probably read the text? A. People. B. Science. C. Sports. D. Travel. 40. What is the best title for the text? A. Ways to Protect Nature Better B. Power Stations Floating in the Sky C. Problems of Traditional Power Stations D. Some tea bags are made of plastic, and hot water lets microplastics into our drinks. All in all, microplastics are everywhere around us.
