Helen was a girl who liked wasting time thinking about her tasks instead of doing them at once. Though her teacher advised her to change, she didn’t care at all.
One morning, her neighbour Mr. Black, the owner of a fruit shop, said to Helen, “I need some grapes. Could you go to Mr. Green’s farm to pick some for me? I will pay you 15 cents a kilo for all that you pick for me. But you’d better go there as soon as possible.”
Helen agreed right away and then quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the grapes. After getting home, she couldn’t help counting in her mind how much money she would get if she picked five kilos.
After finding that she would get 75 cents, she started to dream big, “If I picked ten kilos, how much would I make then?”
“Wow!” she shouted, “Unbelievable! I would make a dollar and fifty cents!”
Ten minutes passed, twenty minutes passed, and then an hour passed… She still lost herself in her big dream. Before she realized it, it was lunchtime. She had to stay at home to eat lunch.
As soon as lunch was over, she hurried to the farm. However, some boys had been there, and nearly all the grapes were picked. She tried her best but could not find even half a kilo to fill the basket!
All of a sudden, Helen thought of what her teacher had told her, “Do your task at once, and never waste too much time dreaming. One doer (行动者) is worth 100 dreamers.”
21. Mr. Green would pay Helen if she picked grapes for him.
22. Helen ran home quickly to get a basket of grapes.
23. If Helen picked 10 kilos of grapes, she would get 1.5 dollars.
24. Helen went to the farm after having lunch at home.
25. The story tells us that it’s better to do at once than to waste too much time dreaming.

Wu Yuqing, a wonderful Miao woman, lives in beautiful Dali, Yunnan. She carefully protects and passes down the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) with her needles and threads (针线).
Since she was young, Wu Yuqing has been deeply influenced by the rich Miao culture. She learned Miao embroidery (苗族刺绣) from her grandma and mother. At first, she found it very challenging, but she never stopped practicing. Over time, her skills improved. When she was only 11 years old, she could make her own embroidery works. Now, she knows 8 different ways to embroider. What’s amazing is that she doesn’t need any drawings. She can create beautiful patterns (图案) just from memory.

Now, 130 women in her village can do Miao embroidery. She has a plan to build a workshop to teach more people. There, she will show old tools used in embroidery and her own beautiful works.

Plants might look like they are doing nothing, but in fact they are very busy. And what they’re doing is very “smart”.
In the 1980s, two scientists in the U.S. found that plants could “talk” to each other. They planted several young trees in separate pots and put them all inside a clear box. When scientists pulled leaves out of the young tree, it produced a chemical to try to protect itself. Then, about 36 hours later, the other trees produced the same chemical. This showed that the hurt tree had sent a message to the others through the air.
Since then, more studies have shown that plants can “talk” in a very complex (复杂的) way. For example, they can send different signals when they are hurt by different insects. Their messages can even tell other plants how far the danger is.
What’s more, plants can even learn. An Australian study used the mimosa (含羞草). This plant is known for hiding its leaves when it’s touched. Scientists put many pots of this plant on special shelves. They then dropped each plant 15 cm down on its shelf and repeated this 60 times. At first, the plants curled up (卷曲) their leaves, but they soon stopped. They had learned that the drop wouldn’t hurt them.
Plants don’t have brains, but they can still learn. How do they do that? Well, plants have a system of tubes (管道系统) that transport water and food within them. When plants are influenced by the environment, they produce certain chemicals. These chemicals move through the tubes to send important messages. This helps plants adjust their actions to the environment.
36. What did plants communicate through according to the study in the 1980s?
A. Through the air. B. Through the soil.
C. Through the water. D. Through the leaves.
37. What can plants’ signals tell other plants?
A. The colour of the danger. B. The best time to receive water.
C. The ways to grow new leaves. D. The type of insect attacking them.
38. How does the writer organize Paragraph 3?
A. Causes→Effects. B. Descriptions→Reasons.
C. Facts→Examples. D. Problems→Solutions.
39. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Plants can protect themselves.
B. Plants have the ability to learn.
C. Plants produce chemicals to warn others.
D. Plants tell the danger through others’ actions.
40. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Plants Learn Like Animals B. Plants Remember Things Well

Cooking, the art and science of preparing food, is far more than daily housework. It’s like a fun classroom where you can learn different subjects all at once! 41
Science is everywhere in cooking. When you make bread, the yeast (酵母) eats sugar and makes bubbles of gas. 42 When you cook meat and it turns brown and smells good, that’s cool chemistry. Also, think about heating water, which shows how heat moves. It is all about physics.
43 You need to follow the instructions when you mix materials, like “adding 1/4 spoon of salt”. Sometimes you have to make some changes to feed more or fewer people. That means doing math. Even buying the required materials with low cost teaches you math.
Food has a lot of history. Pasta didn’t start in Italy-it came from Asia long ago! Spices (香料) were once traded like gold, and this changed how countries talked to each other. 44 In hot places, people grow more different foods than in cold places. Learning about these things helps you understand how the world works.
Cooking is like a secret key that opens the door to learning many subjects. It’s not just about making yummy food. 45 Schools should teach cooking because it helps students see how everything in learning is connected!
A. Geography also matters.
B. This is biology in action.
C. Math helps a lot in the kitchen.
D. Cooking avoids wasting money.
E. It’s also about becoming smarter in lots of ways.
F. Some students often spend money buying ready-made food.
G. The following will explain why cooking should be taught at school.
