I really wanted to volunteer at a national park, but I was too late to apply, so I went for a job at a diving center. This turned out to be Better than what I considered like helping in a school. When IT comes to packing, obviously you need your travel documents, your phone and charger. Then think about any medicine you might need. How did I stay in touch with family? When I first arrived, I wrote a letter every week. They took at least four weeks to arrive, though. Then when I met someone else who had a blog, I realized that that's the thing to do. A phone call is nice, but the time difference can make that difficult. There are lots of things you'll need to adapt to when you're in another country. The language, of course, but luckily so many people speak english. And I knew i'd struggle with the hot food. I hadn't realized the effect that climate would have on us, though, generally speaking, I really enjoyed my time away. It's a good way to make friends and you gain confidence too. The Natural History Museum in London holds a yearly contest for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Here are some of this year’s best pictures, and the stories behind them.
The grand prize this year was won by Wim van den Heever of South Africa for an image called “Ghost Town Visitor”. The picture shows a rare brown hyena in front of an empty house in a town in Namibia where no one has lived for 70years. With humans gone, animals have come back to this desert town. Mr. van der Heever set up a “camera trap” in the location, but it took him years to capture the perfect image.
Qingrong Yang of China made regular trips to Yundang Lake in Fujian province to take this image, which won him the award for Bird Behavior. His photo, called “Synchronized Fishing”, captures the moment when a little egret (小白鹭) drops toward the water, hoping to grab a small fish, only to have a large ladyfish snatch the tiny creature first.
Australia’s Georgina Steytler won the Invertebrates (animals without a backbone) award for her picture “Mad Hatterpillar”. The picture shows the head of an unusual caterpillar called the “gum-leaf skeletoniser caterpillar”. These caterpillars eat away the green parts of certain tree leaves, leaving behind just the “skeletons” of the leaves.
Each time the caterpillar sheds its skin, it keeps the old “head” part, giving it this strange look. The heads may protect the caterpillar from predators. Ms. Steytler snapped the picture in Western Australia while the sun was setting behind the insect.
Normally, moray eels are seen underwater. But Shane Gross of Canada captured this image of three peppered moray eels in the Seychelles Islands out>. among the rocks after the tide went out. Mr. Gross realized that the eels were using their strong sense of smell to look for dead fish. They can remain out of water for up to 30 seconds at a time. His picture, called “Like an Eel out of Water”, won the award for Animals in their Environment.
21. What can we know from Qingrong Yang’s picture?
A. Qingrong Yang won the grand prize.
B. The little egret (小白鹭) didn’t catch the small fish.
C. Qingrong Yang spent years to take the picture
D. Qingrong Yang’s picture was called “Mad Hatterpillar”.
22.Whose work won the award for Animals in their Environment?
A. Wim van den Heever B. Georgina Steytler C. Shane Gross D. Qingrong Yang
23. What do these four pictures have in common?
A. They are all related to the Wildlife.
B. They are all related to the world climate change.
C. They are all related to the environment protection.
D. They are all related to the water.

Tony Hawk, who I thought was bigger than life, came in the room and then the interview began.
As the world’s greatest skateboarder, he talked about how his life was not always so miraculous (奇迹般的). He mentioned one day he was skating on top of the world, and the next day the sport of skateboarding fell right on its face. Life for Tony has had its ups and downs, and what brought him back up was the way he believed in himself. One of the most tragic events in Tony’s life was that his father passed away. Although he suffered such pain, he never lost sight of his dream. He put his energy into his dream, which helped him overcome his sadness.
One part of Tony that completely impressed me is the way he accepts himself. His goal is never to do better than others, but to do his best. If he does the best he can, it doesn’t matter how anyone else takes him. That’s true and wise. As for me, I play baseball and things aren’t going so well, but I’m trying my hardest because that’s life. It’s how you approach those bad days that will keep you on top.
Confidence brought Tony to the next level. During our meeting he continually talked about the importance of following one’s dream. He also said, along with that, one needs to have a strong faith in one’s own ability to achieve that dream, no matter what challenges are presented.
By the end, I didn’t see the same guy who had walked through the door an hour earlier. Now I view him as more than a world-class skateboarder. He is also a normal person who has dealt with many of the same problems we all face, but the difference is that he is always able to rise above his problems by having faith in his dream.
24. What does the underlined part “fell right on its face” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Finished. B. Continued. C. Failed. D. Happened.
25. The example of the author’s playing baseball is used to show he ________
A. accepts Tony Hawk’s suggestion B. doesn’t want to play baseball anymore
C. wants to be as successful as Tony Hawk D. has the same view of life as Tony Hawk
26. In the eyes of the author, what makes Tony Hawk special?
A. His achievement. B. His unusual experience.
C. His confidence in winning the game. D. His determination to realize his dream.
27. What does the author think of Tony Hawk at the end of the interview?
A. Simple. B. Real. C. Lucky. D. Cautious.

In January 2018, the long-awaited ban on plastic microbeads (微珠) in make-up and washing products came into force in the UK. These tiny bits of plastic were discovered to enter the ocean in their millions. The ban was a conservation victory, but scientists at Northumbria University have always been aware that such beads are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tiny bits of marine pollution. The scientists’ recent findings suggest that microfibers produced during the washing of textiles (织物) are likely to be a more significant contributor to pollution than the beads ever were.
The new study from scientists at Northumbria University has revealed that almost 13,000 tons of microfibers, which are equal to two rubbish trucks every day, are being released into European marine environments every year as they fall off clothing in washing machines. These microfibers are made up of a range of materials and in fact the vast majority are natural fibers, such as cotton, wool and viscose. Though significantly more biodegradable (可生物降解的) than man-made fibers, these fibers have still been found in significant quantities in the bottom of the European oceans.
Extensive research is being carried out on how to cut down microfiber pollution. The Northumbria researchers note that several textile design rules have been established, and that more research is being undertaken to encourage their adoption by the textile industry.
The team points out that there’s a barrier to consumers’ adopting colder and quicker washing cycles, since the consumers are concerned that they will not achieve the desired level of cleaning. In their conclusion they call for further advances in cold-water cleaning technology to smooth away the performance gap between regular warm cycles and colder and quicker alternatives.
“This is the first major study to examine real household wash loads and the reality of fiber release,” said John R Dean, who led the study. “Finding an ultimate solution to the pollution of marine ecosystems by microfibers released during clothes-washing will likely require significant actions in both the production processes of textiles and the design of washing machines.”
28. What do scientists at Northumbria University mainly focus on?
A. Benefits of wildlife conservation. B. Microfiber pollution from clothing.
C. Methods of making textiles clean. D. Marine pollution from tiny bits of plastic.
29. What can we infer from the new study?
A. It takes a long time for fibers to break down.
B. Man-made fibers are easy to fall off clothing.
C. Natural fibers do little harm to the environment.
D. Household washing machines operate in an eco-friendly way.
30. Consumers say “No” to the colder and quicker washing cycles mainly because the cycles are believed to ________.
A. be slow in washing clothes B. be too complex to operate
C. waste too much heat and water D. fail to remove dirt effectively
31. What did John R Dean think of solving microfiber pollution?
A. It seems impractical. B. It’s unlikely to succeed.
C. It may need joint efforts. D. It needs urgent actions.
D
While we race into a future where we outsource (外包) most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.”
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs, organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
32. According to the author, what is the primary threat posed by over-trusting Big Tech?
A. It will cause people to rely entirely on screens for communication.
B. It may lead to the rapid development of super intelligent machinery.
C. It could weaken our ability to think and to use our minds independently.
D. It prevents artificial intelligence from solving complex problems effectively.
33. What is supposed to be included in a mindfulness practice?
A. Concentrating on making proper gestures.
B. Being aware of our body’s role in thinking.
C. Attaching importance to different body parts.
D. Laying emphasis on nonverbal communication.
34. Why does the author mention gesturing during conversations?
A. To argue that people should speak less and gesture more.
B. To show that body language is more effective than speech.
C. To illustrate how physical actions can support and clarify thinking.
D. To emphasize the importance of nonverbal communication in AI development.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence
B. The Art of Mindful Thinking in the AI Age
C. How to Improve Communication Through Gestures
D. The Greatest Threat of Super Intelligent AI Machinery

How to Travel in Time
The term “NOSTALGIA” (怀旧) used to describe a mental disease. The “algia” bit means “pain”, and the word was coined by a 17th-century doctor treating homesick soldiers, whose symptoms included hallucinations (幻觉) and depression. 36 And it’s a great example of the benefits of a strong memory — choosing to recapture moments from the past to enjoy them all over again.
As evidence, a recent report highlighted the increase in old songs being streamed on Spotify during lockdown. It seems that we found strength in musical memories of happier times. 37 That’s because memory skills can take you into the future, too — bringing a whole new set of rewards.
In another pandemic experiment, people wrote letters to their future selves, and found that they improved their mood by imagining themselves safely on the other side of COVID-19. 38
*To reawaken happy feelings, use all your senses not just sight. Smell, taste, touch and sound will also help you to recreate the past in rich clarity. If you find a memory that’s particularly helpful — for reassurance, say — keep using it! 39
*When you’re procrastinating (拖延),visualize an end result. Flash forward to see the floor swept or the essay finished, and use that positive image to make you swing into action.
*Ahead of major challenges, imagine the full impact of success. Don’t just picture yourself getting that great job: fill your mind with the really big ways it’s going to change your life.
40 . But the more you learn to control your memory, the better you’ll be at mining your past, and shaping your future, to be your best self now.
A. The usefulness of nostalgia seems to vary with age.
B. Today we have a much more positive attitude to nostalgia.
C. Here are my tips for becoming a confident time traveller yourself.
D. The following tricks help connect with your past and future selves.
E. You’ll get faster at finding it, and add extra layers of detail each time.
F. But there’s also a growing body of research into time travel “the other way”.
G. There’ll still be times when old thoughts cause sadness, or you’re anxious about what’s next.

One ordinary afternoon, seeking an old novel for research, I wandered into a cluttered secondhand bookstore. When I 41 the dusty shelves, a familiar spine (书脊) caught my eye. My heart 42 a-beat — it was a childhood 43 I hadn’t seen in decades — the very copy that had been stolen from my school bag. 44 nostalgia, I bought it immediately.

As a key player on my school’s basketball team, I lived and breathed the game. My best friend David, also my teammate, shared this passion, and we had one hero in common: Stephen Curry. We’d stay late after practice, copying his quick crossovers and long-range shots, chatting about how cool it would be to play like him someday.
Then a big loss hit me hard. It was in the game, which was tied with only 10 seconds left. I got the ball — our team’s last chance to win. But I missed the shot. We lost, and I could see disappointment on my teammates’ faces.
After that, I became a different person. I kept blaming myself, and my confidence totally disappeared. David noticed my struggle right away. He practiced with me alone and wanted to encourage me, “One bad play doesn’t make you a loser.”
I stared at my shoes, “I almost messed it all up. What if I do it again in the championship final?”
David stepped closer, his tone soft but sharp, “Cheer up, Jimmy. Don’t let one failure hold you back. Think about our hero Curry…” He paused, eyes suddenly lighting up like he’d just had a breakthrough, without noticing my whisper “My hero Curry would think I’m a loser too.”
During the training for the championship, I didn’t want to join at all. But when David told me there was a surprise waiting for me in the gym, I hesitated for a moment and finally decided to go check it out.
On stepping into the gym, I noticed the big screen — there was a video from Curry himself — smiling, holding a basketball, saying, “Hey, Jimmy! Mistakes aren’t losses; they’re just lessons waiting to be used. Get back out there, trust your training, and remember: even the best shooters miss. What matters is you take the next shot.”
Moved but confused, how could Curry appear on the screen? Suddenly, I realized it was an AI Curry.

写作 第一节(满分15分)
Good morning, dear fellow students! World Youth Skills Day on July 15th reminds us of the vital role of skill development in our growth. I firmly hold that practical skills are essential for young people.
Last semester, I participated in a school woodworking workshop. This experience not only enabled me to craft a small bookshelf for my family but also fostered my sense of responsibility and patience. In today’s fiercely competitive society, practical skills, alongside academic achievements, equip us to stand out and adapt to future challenges, laying a solid foundation for our growth.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Anyway, I was inspired greatly. I grabbed my basketball and rushed to the court — no more hiding! David laughed as I joined the training, “That’s the guy I know!” Practising day in and day out helped me sharpen my skills. Every time I failed to get a point, Curry’s “next shot” pushed me. For the first time, I didn’t fear mistakes. By the time championship week started, I was ready to perform beyond everyone’s expectations with my accurate shooting and continuous efforts, for self-doubt had faded into muscle memory.
I stood confidently on the championship final court, ready to give my all. The cheers of the crowd filling the air, I only focused on the ball. With only ten seconds left, a similar scene unfolded once again. At the moment, the powerful words of David and AI Curry echoed again in my ears. The shot didn’t just score points, for it brought back the player I’d almost lost. Not until I heard claps and cheers around me did I realize that I made it. It was my friend’s firm support and my idol’s inspiring spirit that brought the confidence back into me.

【Text 2】
W: I can’t wait to see the movie.
M: Shall I pick you up at about 1:00?

M: That’s settled then.
【Text 3】
W: Are you going to take the job?
M: Well, they will offer me some training, and the office is not far from my home, but the pay is low. So I’m going to turn it down.

W: Actually, my English teacher gave me a spare copy. But there’s a novel I wouldn’t mind getting.
M: OK. Shall we get something to eat after that?
W: Good idea. But I don’t like to go to that noodle restaurant this time. I want to go to that place selling pancakes. And they also have pizzas, which you will like.
M: Sounds good.
【Text 7】

M: Excellent choice. May I have your name, please?
W: Sure, let me just write that down for you.

W: Hello. Can you put me through to your manager, please?
M: Oh, I’m sorry, but she’s not at her desk at the moment. Maybe I can help you?
W: I ordered a new, yellow coffee pot and it arrived today. But it’s not yellow! It’s purple.
M: Oh, OK. Do you have the order number there, Madam?
W: Yes. It’s 20241203A001.
M: One moment, please. Ah, yes. I see the problem. Order number 20241203A001 was for the purple coffee pot with the product number TP12FS. The yellow one you wanted is TP12SF.
W: Oh, I see. I must have made an error when I was ordering. I’m afraid I want to get my money back!
M: We can send you a yellow pot and the delivery person will pick up the purple one.
W: So I don’t have to send it back myself?
M: No, not at all. The delivery man will be with you on Monday morning.
W: Oh. That’s very good. Thank you.
【Text 10】
W: I’m glad to be here to talk about my gap year, which took place over two decades ago. I decided to go to the island of Bali. I really wanted to volunteer at a national park, but I was too late to apply so I went for a job at a diving center. This turned out to be better than what I considered, like helping in a school.
When it comes to packing, obviously you need your travel documents, your phone and charger. Then think about any medicine you might need. How did I stay in touch with family? When I first arrived, I wrote a letter every week. They took at least four weeks to arrive though. Then, when I met someone else who had a blog, I realized that’s the thing to do. A phone call is nice, but the time difference can make that difficult.
There are lots of things you’ ll need to adapt to when you’ re in another country. The language, of course. But luckily, so many people speak English. And I knew I’d struggle with the hot food. I hadn’t realized the effect the climate would have on us, though. Generally speaking, I really enjoyed my time away. It’s a good way to make friends, and you gain confidence too.
