At 12, my father decided to take me a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable attractions in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.
We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our understanding of what is honestly a good subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.
We reached the end of the line and felt frightened when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came up to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then got on it with us.
Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (换乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and shook our hands gently at the stop. Then with his quiet way, he got on the train to return the way he had come.
What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason but I always try to make them change their minds with this story.
4. What happened to the author and his family on the train?
A. They were lost in the French countryside.
B. They had a quarrel with the other passengers.
C. They found it hard to understand the subway design.
D. They met an old man and his grandchild immediately.
5. How did the old man help them?
A. By paying for their tickets. B. By teaching them some French.
C. By showing them the correct train. D. By taking them to Versailles directly.
6. Which of the following can best describe the old man?
A. Proud and caring.
B. Considerate and helpful.
C. Kind and creative.
D. Patient and talkative.
7. Why did the author write the passage?
A. To explain an unexpected problem.
B. To list the unbelievable attractions in Paris.
C. To show the importance of mastering French.
D. To share an unforgettable travel experience.

A scientist working with NASA has offered a simple answer to a long-standing question: if the universe is so large, why haven’t we heard from intelligent aliens (外星人)? In an early study that has not yet been peer-reviewed, Dr Robin Corbet, from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, argues that it could simply be because they’re not interested in finding us.
This question is often called the “Fermi paradox”. It points out that the universe seems big enough to hold many habitable worlds, yet we have found no clear sign of intelligent life beyond Earth. Some people think aliens are hiding, or that they are too advanced for us to understand. Corbet offers a more ordinary explanation.
He argues that many civilizations might stop making major progress after reaching a “good enough” level of technology. Once life becomes comfortable, curiosity may fade. Even if travel between stars is possible, a civilization might explore for a time and then decide there is little new to discover. Each journey could bring fewer surprises, so the cost of exploration no longer seems worth it.
Corbet compares this to getting used to something: when the same experience happens again and again, it feels less exciting. If most civilizations reach such a limit, sending messages across space may start to seem pointless. In that case, our radio searches might pick up only weak “leakage” signals — radio waves that escape by accident — rather than deliberate messages. Corbet adds that a detection could happen someday, but it might not lead to a big jump in our technology. The Galaxy, he suggests, may be full of life — just not life that finds us especially important.
8. What does Corbet’s study mainly try to explain?
A. The absence of clear alien contact.
B. The idea of aliens’ hiding from humans.
C. The abundance of habitable worlds in space.
D. The lack of humans’ interest in finding aliens.
9. What does paragraph 3 suggest about the motivation to explore further?
A. Comfort may renew curiosity about exploring.
B. Star travel may keep curiosity alive for a time.
C. A settled life may weaken the drive to explore.
D. New discoveries may make exploration worthwhile.
10. Why does the author mention “getting used to something” in the last paragraph?
A. To account for weak “leakage” signals.
B. To show why messages might seem pointless.
C. To explain why exploration may lose its appeal.
D. To suggest a detection may bring little progress.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. When the Stars Stop Calling B. Life Out There, Silence Here
C. Why the Galaxy Isn’t Empty D. Clear Signals, Fading Curiosity
D
Sharks and their relatives are some of the most threatened vertebrates (脊椎动物) on Earth. Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) provide homes for countless fish species that are vital for fisheries and are therefore an especially important ecosystem for humans — and one where the decline of shark populations seems to be especially serious.
The study by Simpfendorfer with his team is the result of a worldwide cooperation called the Global FinPrint project. The data analyzed include more than 20,000 hours of standardized underwater video taken at nearly 400 reefs in 67 countries around the world. It reveals declines of 60% to 73% of once-abundant coral reef shark species at reefs around the world.
However, the findings of Simpfendorfer with his team include signs of hope and a clear path forward. Their results show that although shark populations in many reefs had declined, some healthy reef shark populations remained. The reefs with healthier shark populations had some important similarities: they tended to be in the waters of high-income countries with stronger natural resource management regulations. A country that lacks the resources to feed its people is less able to sustainably manage and protect its biodiversity.
The most unexpected result of the study is that a decline or complete loss of shark species in one reef was not always associated with similar changes in nearby reefs. They found that one reef can be overly fished so badly that a once-common reef shark species is totally gone, but another reef a short distance away can have healthy populations of that same species. It is likely that healthy populations can eventually help repopulate nearby areas.
The problem is clear — animals that provide ecosystem services that are vital for human food security and livelihoods are disappearing at an alarming rate. The loss of sharks and the ecosystem services they provide represents an ecological disaster that can cause substantial harm to humans. But apparently, the findings have shown a way. If the threat that led to population decline is resolved, then these important and threatened animals may recover.
12. Why is Simpfendorfer with his team mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To stress the result of global cooperation.
B. To state the urgency of protecting the earth.
C. To show the severe conditions of certain sharks.
D. To present the figures of their contributions to sharks.
13. According to Simpfendorfer’s findings, what allowed healthy reef shark populations to remain?
A. Strict laws in rich countries. B. Public awareness of protecting reefs.
C. Important similarities among waters. D. Natural resources in developed countries.
14. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Changes in reefs lead to loss of shark species.
B. Humans and animals depend on each other in ecosystem.
C. It’s not clear whether humans cause damage to biodiversity.
D. The declined shark species have nothing to do with overfishing.
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Sharp decline of coral reefs. B. Potential recovery of reef sharks.
C. Global cooperation of saving sharks. D. Amazing discovery of coral reefs.

Flowers for You
Flowers should be presented to winners. Why should they be given to this loser? Since she failed four days ago at the International Gymnastics Championships, Lily felt ashamed. Now she was back at the Capital Airport from abroad. Upon entering the airport, Lily wished she could hide her head under her collar. She was afraid to face the people who had come to welcome her right at the airport.
Two years before, Lily took part in an international competition for the first time, and unexpectedly she won two world titles. When Lily returned home that year, she was given a warm welcome in the same place. Many fans and reporters applauded her for the wonderful performance. And some stewardesses(女乘务员) would surround her, greeting warmly and presenting beautiful flowers. Of them, a quiet stewardesses named June always hugged her with a sincere smile, and said to her “You are beautiful”. Lily would smile brightly back at June, thinking of her as a special girl.
During the past two years, Lily had taken part in many international competitions and brought back many shining medals. She got smiles, flowers and cheers. She felt proud.
But the more she won, the more fear Lily had of losing. So her mind was, in fact, more burdened with success.
In order to avoid people at the airport, Lily hid herself among the crowd with a hat. Walking past a group of tourists holding cherry blossom flags, she saw reporters gathering near the luggage area. Their cameras followed a smiling badminton star as kids handed him sunflowers.

A 9. C 10. C 11. B

根据第一段中“A scientist working with NASA has offered a simple answer to a long-standing question: if the Universe is so large, why haven’t we heard from intelligent aliens (外星人)?(一位在美国宇航局工作的科学家,对一个长期存在的疑问给出了简单的答案:既然宇宙如此浩瀚,我们为什么从未收到过智慧外星人的音讯?)”以及第二段中“This question is often called the “Fermi paradox”. It points out that the universe seems big enough to hold many habitable worlds, yet we have found no clear sign of intelligent life beyond Earth. Some people think aliens are hiding, or that they are too advanced for us to understand. Corbet offers a more ordinary explanation.(这个问题通常被称为“费米悖论”。它指出:宇宙之大,足以容纳无数宜居星球,然而人类至今未发现地球之外存在智慧生命的明确迹象。有人认为外星人在刻意隐藏,或是它们的文明太过先进,人类无法理解;而Corbet给出了一个更平淡的解释。)”可知,Corbet的研究主要试图解释为什么没有明确的与外星人接触的迹象。故选A。
根据第三段中“He argues that many civilizations might stop making major progress after reaching a “good enough” level of technology. Once life becomes comfortable, curiosity may fade.(他认为,许多文明在达到“足够好”的技术水平后可能会停止取得重大进展。一旦生活变得舒适,好奇心可能会消退。)”可知,第三段表明稳定的生活可能会削弱探索的动力。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Corbet compares this to getting used to something: when the same experience happens again and again, it feels less exciting. If most civilizations reach such a limit, sending messages across space may start to seem pointless.(Corbet将此比作习惯某事:当同样的经历一次又一次地发生时,它就不那么令人兴奋了。如果大多数文明都达到了这样的极限,那么跨越太空发送信息可能开始显得毫无意义。)”可知,作者提到“习惯某事”是为了解释为什么探索可能会失去吸引力。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“A scientist working with NASA has offered a simple answer to a long-standing question: if the Universe is so large, why haven’t we heard from intelligent aliens (外星人)?(一位在美国宇航局工作的科学家,对一个长期存在的疑问给出了简单的答案:既然宇宙如此浩瀚,我们为什么从未收到过智慧外星人的音讯?)” B“Life Out There, Silence Here(那里有生命,这里却沉默)”是最佳标题。故选B。
C 13. A 14. B 15. B

根据第二段“The study by Simpfendorfer with his team is the result of a worldwide cooperation called the Global FinPrint project. 【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The reefs with healthier shark populations had some important similarities: they tended to be in the waters of high-income countries with stronger natural resource management regulations. (拥有更健康鲨鱼种群的珊瑚礁有一些重要的相似之处:它们往往位于高收入国家的水域,这些国家有更严格的自然资源管理法规。)”可知,根据Simpfendorfer的发现,是富裕国家的严格法律使得健康的珊瑚礁鲨鱼种群得以保留。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The problem is clear — animals that provide ecosystem services that are vital for human food security and livelihoods are disappearing at an alarming rate. The loss of sharks and the ecosystem services they provide represents an ecological disaster that can cause substantial harm to humans. (问题很清楚——为人类粮食安全和生计提供重要生态系统服务的动物正以惊人的速度消失。鲨鱼的消失及其提供的生态系统服务是一场生态灾难,可能对人类造成重大伤害。)”可推断,人类和动物在生态系统中相互依存。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“But apparently, the findings have shown a way. If the threat that led to population decline is resolved, then these important and threatened animals may recover.

故填an。
根据时间状语“for more than 3 years”可知,句子应使用现在完成时,主语Maya Lance为第三人称单数,助动词使用has,learn的过去分词有两种形式learnt和learned。故填has learnt/has learned。
固定搭配on one’s way to意为“在去……的路上;朝着……的方向前进”。故填on。
故填to promote。
故填be drawn。
故填who/that。

June handed Lily a bunch of flowers and hugged her gently.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When no one noticed her, Lily felt even more ashamed. She pulled her hat down, feeling some tears welling up in her eyes. The cheers for the badminton star pierced her ears like needles. She glanced down at her empty hands — no medals, no glory, just the bitter taste of defeat. She felt frustrated as if she was forgotten in a distant corner while others shone brightly. Lily was about to flee, when a soft voice “Lily” stopped her. Lily raised her head. The stewardess June stood before her with a warm smile on her face.
June handed Lily a bunch of flowers and hugged her gently. Lily froze, her hands trembling as the delicate flowers brushed her cheeks. Through unclear vision, she was touched by the familiar sincere smile that had once greeted her victories. “Why...?” she whispered weakly, holding the flowers like fragile hope. “You’ve always been beautiful,” June said softly, “not because of medals, but because you rise when you fall.” Lily felt a sense of warmth rising in her heart. And the flowers’ strong fragrance seemed to turn into a powerful force that went through her body. And immediately, she understood true beauty grew not from unbroken triumphs, but from the courage to rise and persist.
