Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he had a hard time putting his mind to class. He certainly had the ability to focus For example, when he got lost in a good book, thinking felt easy. But when it came to some other mental (脑力的) tasks, thinking was like pulling teeth and his attention was off.
Westbrook is now a scientist. His research is challenging old ideas about why we can’t keep our attention on certain tasks.
For years, scientists thought that mentally tiring tasks like solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out of the window. As a result, these harder tasks would make us run out of energy and lose focus more quickly.
However, Westbrook’s research suggests our brain is always working hard. Even when we are just looking around a room, our brain is working on lots of information and using lots of energy. But we don’t find these tasks tiring. The real problem is that difficult tasks require different brain areas to work with each other in new ways. The brain has to break out of its usual ways, which causes discomfort and makes these tasks seem harder than they really are.
“Thinking about beginning a hard task feels harder than actually doing it,” Westbrook says. This early mental difficulty can lead us to put off the task or even avoid trying. “If we can get over it, thinking will become easier,” he adds.
Westbrook’s team has found ways to help us do that. For one, he suggests focusing on the good results of completing the task instead of how hard it will be. We can also try to get into “flow (心流)”. When people are in “flow”, they seem not to care how hard the task is. One key to entering “flow” is to reduce the things we are not sure about. Before writing a book report, for example, you can set yourself a goal, like finishing it in 15 minutes. Finally, it can help to make these mentally tiring tasks a habit. Try doing them at the same time and place every day or week. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won’t just feel easier—it will be easier.
19.How does the writer introduce the topic?
A.By giving an example. B.By showing advice.
C.By asking questions. D.By listing numbers.
20.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Easy tasks need no attention at all.
B.All mental tasks cost the same energy.
C.Looking out is hard for people’s brain.
D.People lose focus because they’re tired.
21.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.An old idea. B.The mental difficulty.
C.The hard task. D.A good beginning.
22.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To explain why we lose focus and how to get better.
B.To show how difficult the mental tasks usually are.
C.To tell people the importance of developing good habits.
D.To introduce a great scientist called Andrew Westbrook.

Matthew Henson was an American explorer (探险家). He was a member of the group who are thought to have been the first people to ever reach the North Pole (北极点). At the time, lots of people only spoke about the group’s leader, Robert Peary. It wasn’t until many years later that people also celebrated Matthew’s success.
Matthew Henson was born on 8th August 1866. He started working on a ship named “Katie Hines” when he was 12 years old. Matthew travelled to many different countries on the ship and he learnt lots of new skills. Later, Matthew worked in a shop. An explorer called Robert Peary visited the shop and spoke to Matthew. Some parts of the world are very hot and dry, with little rain. A team of scientists in Chile (智利) has been studying a way to collect water in these areas. It’s called fog harvesting
The scientists carried out a study in Alto Hospicio. This city in the Atacama Desert in Chile has very little rainfall. Most people there use trucks to deliver (运输) water. However, fog often forms in the mountains around the city, and the scientists thought they could make use of it.
Fog forms close to the ground. It’s made up of tiny water droplets. To collect the water, the scientists have set up wire netting (金属网) in the mountains. The netting is hung between poles. When the fog passes through the netting, the tiny droplets join together to form larger droplets on the wires. The water then falls down into a pipe (管道) and is stored in a large box.
The scientists checked how well their fog nets worked. Here’s what they found: To get enough water for the city’s poorest areas each week (about 300,000 liters), they needed fog nets covering 17,000 square meters—that’s bigger than two soccer fields! They also tested a smaller net of 110 square meters (about a classroom size). This smaller net caught enough water to keep all the city’s parks and gardens green.
The team is trying to find the best areas in the country for fog harvesting. They need to think about many questions. For example, how much fog does the area get each year? How thick is the fog? What are the wind patterns in the area? From all this information, they hope to make a useful “fog harvesting map”.
27.What is the purpose of fog harvesting?
A.To reduce fog pollution in hot and dry areas.
B.To study the causes of fog forming in Chile.
C.To collect water from fog to water dry areas.
D.To clean the water in the city’s poorest areas.
28.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How fog harvesting works. B.What fog is made up of.
C.Where the water is stored. D.Why fog is close to the ground.
29.What is the result of the fog harvesting research?
A.Smaller nets can collect more water.
B.A net of a classroom size works the best.
C.The poorest areas can get enough water.
D.Fog harvesting works better but costs more.
30.What are the scientists trying to do about the research?
A.Advise using less water. B.Grow lots of desert plants.
C.Build more water trucks. D.Make a fog harvesting map.

Sara is an English artist. She knew what she’d like to be from the day she began drawing at the age of three. Sara moved to America when she was still a baby. As a little child, she loved coloring in her coloring books. Her parents hoped she could spend more time playing with other children, so they took away her coloring books. Sara began drawing her own pictures and coloring them. By the time Sara was seven, when she took a local art class, her teacher found her style of painting was unusual. Sara’s works were similar in some ways to the paintings by the famous artist Picasso. People started to call her “little Picasso”. Sara’s first public show was held at a Public Library when she was only eight. People were surprised at how young she was. It did not take long for Sara and her works to become famous. She appears on TV programs, in newspapers and magazines all over the world.

20.根据第三段的“… mentally tiring tasks like solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out of the window… harder tasks would make us run out of energy and lose focus more quickly”可知,脑力消耗的任务比简单任务消耗更多能量,因此难任务会让我们精力耗尽、更快失去注意力。
21.根据前一句“This early mental difficulty can lead us to put off the task or even avoid trying.”可知,it指代前文的“the mental difficulty”。
根据“An explorer called Robert Peary visited the shop and spoke to Matthew. He admired Matthew for what he had done and then offered him a job.”
根据“Matthew and Robert explored jungles (丛林) and rainforests in Central America together.”
根据“They taught him how to build sleds and how to make igloos out of the snow.”
根据“He started working on a ship named ‘Katie Hines’ when he was 12 years old. Matthew travelled to many different countries on the ship and he learnt lots of new skills.” An explorer called Robert Peary visited the shop and spoke to Matthew.”可知,后来,Matthew在一家商店工作,探险家Robert Peary来到商店与Matthew交谈,故③排在第二;根据“Matthew and Robert explored jungles (丛林) and rainforests in Central America together.”可知,Matthew和Robert一起探索了中美洲的丛林和雨林,故①排在第三;根据“Matthew said that he was walking at the front of the team, so he thought that he was the first person to ever reach the North Pole.”

根据“Some parts of the world are very hot and dry, with little rain. A team of scientists in Chile (智利) has been studying a way to collect water in these areas. It’s called fog harvesting
根据第三段内容可知,本段描述了雾水收集的工作原理,包括雾的组成(tiny water droplets)、收集水的方法(set up wire netting)、金属网的安装(hung between poles)、雾通过金属网时水滴的变化(join together to form larger droplets)、水的收集(falls down into a pipe and is stored in a large box)。故选A。
根据“Here’s what they found: To get enough water for the city’s poorest areas each week (about 300,000 liters), they needed fog nets covering 17,000 square meters—that’s bigger than two soccer fields!”
根据“The team is trying to find the best areas in the country for fog harvesting. ...From all this information, they hope to make a useful ‘fog harvesting map’.”
31.D 32.E 33.B 34.C 35.
It is good because we can learn something new./It is bad because it harms eyesight and wastes time.
31.根据“They play fun games, watch interesting videos and talk with friends on apps.”
32.根据“Some parents are quite worried.”
33.根据“In Florida, there is a law that doesn’t let kids under 14 use social media. And in Britain, the government may not allow selling phones to kids under 16.”
34.根据“some studies have shown that there is a link between screen time and children’s health. Kids who spend too much time on screens may have health problems, like bad eyesight.”
It is good because we can learn something new./It is bad because it harms eyesight and wastes time.
36.C 37.A 38.C 39.B 40.D 41.D 42.A 43.C 44.B 45.C 46.B 47.C 48.D 49.A 50.B
accepted(接受)、remembered(记住)、recorded(记录)均不符合语境。
with(和)、along(沿着)、across(穿过)均不构成距离表达。
worried(担心)、scared(害怕)、embarrassed(尴尬)与语境矛盾。
set up a campaign表示“发起运动”。take up(开始从事,如爱好)、give up(放弃)、turn up(出现)均不搭配campaign。
speak to sb about sth为固定搭配,意为“向某人讲述某事”。wrote(写)、shouted(喊)、replied(回复)不符合“在会议上发言”的语境。
heavily(沉重地)、quietly(安静地)、safely(安全地)无法体现流畅。
上文“listen”后无to,无法直接接him(需listen to him),而take it seriously为常见表达。
when(时间)、why(原因)、whether(是否)与“ideas on”后的内容不匹配。
failed(失败)、flew(飞)、changed(改变)不合逻辑。
save(拯救)、beat(打败)、punish(惩罚)与“创建游乐场”的积极意义不符。
最后直接引语“Just go for it”是建议内容,advice(建议)正确。wealth(财富)、order(命令)、luck(运气)与引语无关。
51.as soon as 52.joined 53.even 54.proud 55.on 56.success

根据原文“fell in love with this sport…she began to play it”可知,孙颖莎是在开始打球的那一刻起就爱上了这项运动,所以选择as soon as。
根据原文“At the age of 15, Sun Yingsha played so well that she… the national team.”
根据原文“won many matches and she…won at the Olympic Games.”
根据原文“I am…of my country.”
根据原文“The national flag on my chest is more important than my name… my back.”
根据原文“Hard work brings…”

66.an 67.to organize 68.nicer 69.and 70.classmates 71.why 72.seriously 73.your 74.as 75.turned
故填an。
organize为动词,意为“组织”;decide to do“决定做某事”,to do作宾语。故填to organize。
根据“She spent much time practicing by herself...focused on showing off her skills”可知,此处在说明Alice的个人表现,用and表示并列。故填and。
根据“But to Alice’s surprise, her name was not on it.”

根据“work...a team.” 故填as。
根据“She realized that she missed the true meaning of team dancing.”
To celebrate a Chinese festival, I usually follow traditions. In this way, I can understand the deep meaning of the traditional festival better.
Last Dragon Boat Festival, I watched the dragon boat race with my parents by the river. The boats were fast and the drums were loud. My dad told me the story of Qu Yuan, who was a great poet and loved his country very much. After that, we made zongzi at home. It was not easy but fun. I think traditional celebrations are meaningful because they help me remember our culture.
To celebrate a Chinese festival, I usually try modern ways. This helps me bring new life to the traditional festival.
Last Mid-Autumn Festival, I recorded a short video with my family. We took turns saying “Happy Mid-Autumn Festival” to the camera and waving. Then I sent the video to my grandparents who live in another city. To my surprise, they replied with a sweet voice message — they sounded so happy! Though miles apart, we felt close. That’s the beauty of a modern celebration: staying connected in a fresh and meaningful way.
To celebrate a Chinese festival, I usually do a mix of both. I can understand the meaning of the traditional festival and add some fun to it.
During the Spring Festival, my family always stay at home together to welcome the new year. However, last year, my parents took me on a trip to Beijing. It was amazing to visit the Great Wall and Tian’anmen Square. We also had a dinner with my grandparents through a video call. While we were eating Beijing Duck, they were cooking fish at home. Seeing each other made all of us happy.
