“I understand the feeling,” I said. “Thousands of people read our articles every day. We help them learn about what’s happening around the world. I’m proud to do such work.”

Do you love keeping a diary? Do you sometimes feel angry, sad or lonely at the end of a difficult day? How do you make yourselves feel better, by exercising, cooking, reading or watching TV? Experts say starting a diary can improve your mental (心理的) health by letting you release (释放) your feelings.
“It’s simply writing down your thoughts and feelings. And you can understand them more clearly,” according to the University of Rochester Medical Center in the US.
Julia Samuel, who helps people with their mental health problems, said, “talking” to your diary by writing things down can be as good as talking to another person. Writing a diary helps you to control your feelings and reduce stress, which can make you feel relaxed, and sometimes can help you solve problems.
Doctors sometimes recommend (推荐) diary writing to help people with mental health problems. It might also help your physical health. Research has found that people who keep diaries have fewer doctor visits, and may even show reduced symptoms (症状) of some long-term diseases.
Writer Anthony Quinn says there are other “great advantages” to keeping a diary. Writing a diary can let you understand yourself better. and see how you have changed, Quinn wrote in a newspaper The Guardian. He said diaries can even be used instead of social media.
Many experts say it’s best to write a diary every day, or at least every week. Most experts also say people should just write — or draw — anything they want, and not worry about what someone else might think about it. “Look at your writing time as personal relaxation time,” says the University of Rochester. It recommends that people write in a place they find relaxing, maybe with a cup of tea.
28. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By describing a scene.
B. By listing facts.
C. By raising questions.

A. Keeping diaries is as good as talking to yourself.
B. People who keep diaries visit doctors less often.

A. Write a diary whenever you like.
B. Write or draw whatever you like.
C. Drink a cup of tea when writing a diary.
31. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? (P = Paragraph)
A. B. C.

How do you cool yourself on hot summer days? You might turn on your air conditioner (空调), right? But in India, things aren’t so simple. Only about 20 percent of families there own an air conditioner. The rest have to face rising temperatures without any cooling tools.
Now, an ancient material is stepping in to help: terracotta (赤陶土). A long long time ago, the Harappan people (哈拉帕人) used terracotta pots (罐子) to store water. These pots are still common in the Indian countryside today. They help people cool water without using electricity. The material is quite affordable, with each pot costing only one U.S. dollar.
So, how do these pots work? Well, terracotta has many tiny, almost invisible (看不见的) holes on its surface. These holes allow water to slowly dry up. As the water dries up, it carries heat away, causing the area around to become cooler.
Many Indian architects (建筑师) get good ideas from this simple thought. They now use terracotta in their building designs to control indoor temperatures. One pioneer in this field is Ant Studio. Its CoolAnt project adds a terracotta “skin” to buildings. The skin helps moisture (潮气) and heat move between indoor and outdoor spaces. “We’ve seen temperature drops of 6-8℃,” says Monish Siripurapu, the company’s founder (创办人).
Other Indian companies are taking part. A Threshold is reusing old terracotta to make special “breathing” walls. These walls work much like Ant Studio’s terracotta “skin.” MittiCool has created terracotta fridges that can keep food fresh for three to five days without electricity.
Many researchers see terracotta as a great change for our warming planet. As news spreads, the material may become more widely used. We could all stay cool without using lots of energy.
32. What does the underlined word “affordable” mean?
A. difficult to get B. beautiful and colorful C. not too expensive
33. What does Ant Studio’s CoolAnt project use terracotta for?
A. To make fridges.
B. To store water in the countryside.
C. To add a “skin” to buildings for cooling.
34. What is true about terracotta from the passage?
A. It is an environmentally friendly way to stay cool.
B. It is a new material invented by Indian scientists.
C. It will replace air conditioners all over the world soon.
35. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To ask people to stop using air conditioners.
B. To introduce the history of the Harappan people.
C. To tell readers about a traditional cooling way in India.

Do you know how to pick a good book you’ll really like? Here are some tips.
Start with your interest. 36 You can pick something that you love to read, not for school. They can be arts, music, or computers, or fashion design. You name it, there are books about it.
What’s your type? Do you prefer fiction or nonfiction (or both)? Fiction books, like novels, can take you to another world or help you think about something beyond your own experience. Nonfiction books give you the who, what, when, and why of something. 37 Many of them read like novels from start to finish.
Read the description. Some quotes (引言) on the back and inside covers of many books give you an idea of what the book is about. They can also help you pick future books, too. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the quotes and see which writers like the book. 38
Find a family favourite. Which book did your mother love best when she was at your age? 39 Find out and give them a read — then you can exchange your thoughts about the book.
Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book. 40 You can put on some good music, get yourself some tea and let yourself be carried away by the book. You’ll see that time does fly when you’re reading something you love!
A. How about your brothers and sisters?
B. Reading is a good way to improve your English.
C. Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school.
D. Most reading is best enjoyed when you can focus on it.
E. They tell stories using facts — but that doesn’t mean they’re boring.
F. Often, they’ll have similar styles and you might find books you like by those writers, too.

As early as the Song Dynasty, “takeout” (外卖) services were already available. In Zhang Zeduan’s painting Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival (清明上河图) from the Northern Song Dynasty, we can see a 47 leaving the restaurant with two bowls in his left hand and a pair of chopsticks in his right, wearing an apron (围裙) and seeming to deliver (递送) the food somewhere. He is often considered an early delivery person.
According to historical records, a Song emperor would often send palace servants to markets to 48 for him. Besides, some workers and businessmen didn’t like cooking at home and chose to 49 or order takeout directly. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, people could even hire (雇佣) a cook to come to their homes to 50 for the family.
In ancient times, there were three ways to enjoy takeout. The first was servant ordering: a servant would be sent to a restaurant to order. Once the food was ready, someone would deliver it to the customer’s home. The second was regular (定期的) delivery: customers would sign a long-term agreement with a restaurant. On certain days, the restaurant would 51 and send it to the customer’s home. The last one was door-to-door selling: sellers from restaurants would go from house to house to 52 to passers-by and families.
Clearly, the basic ideas of takeout — ordering, payment, and delivery — were all present long ago. It proves that ancient people valued convenience just as much as we do today.

As a young girl, Jane Goodall (简·古道尔) loved watching animals and reading stories about them. She dreamed of going to Africa one day to study and write about wild animals. When she grew up, Jane worked hard and saved enough money for a trip to Africa.
In Africa, Jane met Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous scientist. He needed help with an important new animal study. Dr. Leakey asked Jane to work on the chimpanzee study with him. So, Jane and her mother moved to the country of Tanzania (坦桑尼亚). They lived with chimpanzees in the Gombe (贡贝) Forest. At first, most of the chimps in Gombe were afraid of Jane. Only a chimp she had named David trusted her. He let Jane meet his family group. Jane wrote notes as she watched the chimps every day.
Jane’s discoveries surprised many scientists. She said chimps were smart enough to use sticks as tools to dig up bugs (虫子) to eat. She also said chimps showed feelings, as humans do. Jane’s work made some scientists think again about their old beliefs and ideas about chimps.
After many years in Gombe, Jane became very worried. People were cutting down trees in the Gombe Forest. Hunters were stealing baby chimps. Jane knew what she had to do. She talked about her work with many people all around the world. She asked them for help to save the chimps and the forest. She started the Jane Goodall Institute (研究所) and also created a program called Roots & Shoots to teach young people how to help the environment.
