Kaelin Thorne,a high school senior, has recently restored old wooden furniture in her small town.
She turned the run-down community center's unused warehouse (into a bright, inviting space for
teens, using repaired tables, chairs, and shelves she'd worked on for months.
Kaelin, from a tiny town in Maine called Millfield, grew up,closely watching her dad fix furniture
in their backyard and always trying to join her dad."I remember sitting on the floor, handing him nails
when I was little,"Kaelin says."He taught me that old objects aren't just broken-they have stories."
But her dad had to stop working after a hand injury, and their family relied on her mom's part-time job at
a local bookstore.
Last year,Kaelin noticed the community center's warehouse was full of dusty, broken furniture.
"Teens here have nowhere to hang out after school except the parking lot,she thought. She decided to
fix the furniture and turn the space into a spot with board games, books, and comfortable seats.
Kaelin had to balance schoolwork with sanding, painting, and fixing unsteady legs, often staying up
late to finish both. She couldn't afford new tools,so neighbors lent her their old ones. Her dad, though
he couldn't work much, sat with her in the backyard, giving tips,"Sand with the grain,Kaelin, not
against it."Her best friend,Liora, helped paint on weekends.
Once, she spent three evenings fixing a chair, only to have it break again."I threw my tools down
and almost cried,"she admits. But then she thought about the kids in town, who kept asking,"When
will it be ready?”
After six months, the warehouse was finally transformed. On opening day, dozens of teens poured
in,laughing as they played games on the restored tables."It's like a second home,"one said.
Kaelin's not done. She's now teaching other teens how to fix furniture,so they can keep the space
nice."Watching them learn-that's better than any award,"she says.
4.What kind of girl was Kaelin as a child?
A.A creative thinker.
B.A dependent helper.
C.An eager reader.
D.An attentive observer
5.What made Kaelin start the warehouse restoration?
A.Her accidental inquiry.

Scientists working at the Cambridge University Library have discovered a lost story from the Middle
Ages about King Arthur and Merlin.
In 2019,an old book that listed a wealthy family's property records caught the eye of Dr Irene
Fabry-Tehranchi.The book dates from the 1500s,but looked even older. The cover was parchment(
)and was folded around the book and sewn onto it.
By studying the cover,Fabry-Tehranchi learned that the writing was about King Arthur and Merlin. It
belonged to an Old French continuation that follows the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round
Table. The French story is known as Suite Vulgate du Merlin. There are only fewer than 40 manuscripts
(hand-written copies)of this story. The colors and the writing style helped the scientists figure out that the
book's cover was created between 1275 and 1315.
The old, delicate parchment had hidden most of the writing. The scientists tried to digitally
"unfold"it.They took high-quality photos of the parchment using light of different wavelengths. These
images revealed details unnoticed before. The scientists were now able to read the text on the parchment,
which-written in Old French-contains two stories about King Arthur. The text was still popular
centuries after the manuscript was made, but by the 1500s,British readers were mainly consuming
Arthurian stories in English, not French. Its owners, the Vanneck family of Suffolk, reused it as binding
(material.The Elizabethan bookbinders"saw it as a piece of rubbish,"says a chief photographic
technician."It'd never have crossed their minds what we'd do to it."
"This project was not just about unlocking one text-it was about developing a methodology that can
be used for other manuscripts,Fabry-Tehranchi says."Libraries around the world face similar
challenges with delicate pieces enclosed in bindings, and our approach provides a model for accessing
and studying them even though some scientists say this is so risky and could damage the originals.
8.What can we know about Suite Vulgate du Merlin?
A.Its author was King Arthur and Merlin.
B.Its manuscripts survive in limited numbers.
C.It was written on the ancient parchment.
D.It is about a rich family's property records.
9.Why did Suite Vulgate du Merlin lose its appeal after the 1500s in Britain?
A.It was repurposed.
B.It was replaced by binders.
C.It was lost by its owner.
D.It was written in French.

10.What is Fabry-Tehranchi's attitude to the method used for the old text?
A.Positive.
B.Unclear.
C.Disapproving.
D.Doubtful.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.Digital Recovery of a Lost Tale
B.History of Bookbinding Techniques
C.Old French Manuscript Challenges
D.Previously Unnoticed Property Records

A mushroom can support its own weight while growing through concrete, yet you can easily slice one
for dinner.Scientists have wondered why. They researched mushrooms'microscopic fungal threads
菌菌丝).
Mushrooms are built from tiny thread-like structures called hyphae, which are long chains of fungal
cells. When millions of them work together, they create surprisingly strong structures. But not all
mushrooms organize these threads the same way.The research focused on two types of mushrooms that
represent completely different engineering approaches:white button mushrooms with randomly arranged
threads and maitake mushrooms with threads growing in preferred directions.
To see how these arrangements affect strength, researchers dried both types of mushrooms, examined
their inner structure with electron microscopes, and pressed them to test their force resistance.
When pressed in different directions, white button mushrooms showed virtually no difference. They
were equally squishy no matter which way you pushed them.Because the threads are pointing in all
directions randomly,it makes sense that the overall strength would be roughly the same regardless of how
you apply force.
At the microscopic level, maitake mushrooms'individual threads were harder than those of white
mushrooms. But the team thought strength differences depended not just on individual thread strength but
also on thread arrangements. To prove this, they built 3D computer models of mushroom-like structures,
testing virtual materials with threads pointing horizontally(水平),vertically(垂直)and at various
angles in between. As the thread arrangements changed from horizontal to vertical, the material's
strength increased by nearly 100%.The scientists could effectively double a material's strength just by
rearranging the same basic components.
Engineers could save much time and money in development by using this research to predict
material properties before physical testing."There's so much we can still learn from nature,"says
scientist Mir Jalil Razavi."We're just getting started with this kind of research. The humble mushroom
could serve as a blueprint for future sustainable materials.Modeling materials after fungi would be a
green solution that's also strong enough to be useful in engineering.
12.Why did scientists choose white button mushrooms and maitake mushrooms?
A.They support their own heavy weights.
B.They consist of strong materials.
C.They exhibit contrasting thread patterns.
D.They contain enough water for testing.

What are American diners? They have old-fashioned furniture, bright colors, old music machines,
leather sofas and long counters.Inside, the air often smells of fresh coffee and frying bacon.16
Here, people chat over meals, read newspapers,or grab a quick bite before heading to work.More than
just part of food tradition, they stand for America's once strong middle-class culture, where families
gathered for weekend brunch or casual snacks.
17 They offered lots of food for little money, open late and welcoming to everyone. They were
key meeting spots, connecting people in a diverse yet divided America. And it's still worth getting to
know their history.18 To earn extra cash,17-year-old Walter Scott,a part-time press worker,sold
sandwiches and coffee to night newsroom staff and men's clubs. His simple set-up made it easy for tired
workers to stop by.By 1872,his business grew quickly-he quit his job and used a horse-pulled wagon
(货车)as a street food stand.
The familiar diner look-with much steel and large windows-came a few years later,as people
moved from cities to suburbs.Their bright looks mainly drew passing drivers.Early space flights in the
1950s made people dream big.19
Fast food rose in the 1970s,pushing diners into crisis. But later, new diners were built with a retro
(style to attract more customers. The old-fashioned look began to spread in Europe as well,
giving rise to a series of chains.20 Many old ones have been saved from being knocked down and
moved to new places in the US and Europe. The National Register of Historic Places lists all still-open
old diners.
A.Their story began in 1858
B.Kids enjoy diners'tasty milkshakes.
C.American diners started as cheap places.

D.Tourists often take photos outside classic diners.
E.Today, interest in American diners remains strong.

hoping someone would talk to me,but most people just walked past. That was when Ray came and sat
across from me with a wide smile.
“Hi,mRay,”he said.“You look lost..”
We laughed, and just like that, something clicked. From that moment on,we became inseparable.
He introduced me to his friends, and showed me around school.Slowly,my fear disappeared, and I
started to feel like I belonged.
But midway through the year,Ray started coming to school late.He looked tired, and sometimes he
missed classes. One day,he didn't show up at all. When he finally returned,I decided to talk to him.
At first,he avoided the topic, but eventually,he opened up.
His father had lost his job,and his family was struggling. They couldn't afford groceries some days,
and Ray took a part-time job at a diner, working nights.
I wanted to help,so I told my parents.My mom,a teacher,said thoughtfully,"We should help."
The next day,I invited Ray over "to study",and my mom had cooked a delicious supper. My dad,a
mechanic,started“needing help'”with small jobs around the garage(车库)一oil changes,organizing
tools. Then he paid Ray cash.I'd slip extra snacks into his bag,or lend him "old"textbooks that were
actually new.At first,Ray refused, ashamed, but I told him that friendship meant standing together,
not just during fun times but also during hard times. He smiled and nodded.
As winter turned to spring,Ray started smiling more, and even joined the school debate team.At
