I have invented robots which improve the work of cars. My love of making things began 31 I was a kid. I really became excited about inventing after I learned about Thomas Edison.
One day in fourth grade, our 32 gave us a project in class. We had to write to a company and learn about the products. I thought and thought. 33 I chose the Thomas A. Edison Company. Soon after, the company sent me a book about the life of Thomas Edison. How I enjoyed reading and re-reading about his 34 ! I like the light bulb most. The inventions were clearly printed on my brain.
My dad noticed my interest in inventing and 35 me. He showed me how to turn my ideas into plans and then into new things. Once, I surprised my dad 36 a model plane I made. Later, we found a 37 model plane in a store. I learned that different inventors often invent similar things. It is not unusual for this to happen. I also learned that not all great ideas work. Failure is a(n) 38 part of inventing.
As my father and I worked together, I began to realise that my dad was quite an inventor himself. He was always 39 a better way to do a simple job. His guiding hands, together with my 40 in inventing, led me to become an engineer and inventor. Of course, I also thank Thomas Edison. He is my hero.

Have you ever seen or used a saw, or ju in Chinese? Do you know who invented it?
The inventor was Lu Ban. He was born in the state of Lu in ancient China.
Lu Ban was the greatest carpenter(木匠) in his time. Once the king ordered him and his team to build a palace in a very short time. They would be punished if they missed the deadline(最后期限). They had only axes, or fuzi in Chinese, to cut down the trees and prepare the wood for the palace, so their work was very slow.
One day Lu Ban rushed up the hill to see how things were going. Suddenly the sharp teeth of a leaf cut his hand. Then a bright idea came into his head. Soon he made a long iron bar(条状物) with teeth along its side. With this tool, work became much easier, and they completed the work before the deadline.
That is how the saw was invented.
Lu Ban invented many other useful tools for carpenters and interesting toys for children. The Wooden Bird, for example, could stay in the air for three days. That's why he is considered as the “God of Carpentry”.
( )59. In which picture can you see a saw?
( )60. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. How Lu Ban's hand was hurt. B. Why Lu Ban invented the saw.
C. How the saw was invented. D. How the palace was completed.
( )61. Which of the following did Lu Ban's Wooden Bird work like?
A. A bike. B. A kite. C. A ship. D. A car.

Now we can see more and more electric cars running on the street. But you'll probably be as surprised as I was to find that electric cars aren't a 21st-century invention. Almost two centuries ago, in 1828, a Hungarian engineer named Nyos Jedlik invented the first electric motor to power a small model car. And he wasn't the only one with an interest in that sort of technology. In 1834, Blacksmith Thomas Davenport created a similar device(设备) that could be driven over short distances using an electric track. It was just like streetcars later on! And in the Netherlands, university professor Sibrandus Stratingh built a tiny electric car powered with non-rechargeable(不可充电的) batteries, so people needed too many batteries to run the motor over long distances at such low speeds. It wasn't until 1859 when French physicist Gaston Plante invented the lead acid(铅酸) battery that changed the electric engine game for good. Many countries began producing electric three-wheeled cars until the US made a huge breakthrough. In 1891, they created the first electric vehicle. It was a 6-passenger wagon that could go up to 14 miles per hour. After that, electric-powered taxis filled the streets of London. By the early 1900s, almost one-third of cars in the US were electric-powered. But that wasn't going to last long. What happened to the electric cars by the late 1920s? Let's go on tomorrow.
( )62. Who invented the first electric motor?
A. Gaston Plante. B. Sibrandus Stratingh.
C. Blacksmith Thomas Davenport. D. Nyos Jedlik.
( )63. Why wasn't the electric car put into use until 1859?
A. Because nobody was interested in it.
B. Because the batteries were non-rechargeable.
C. Because it was expensive.
D. Because there were no electric tracks.
( )64. Which of the following is WRONG according to the passage?
A. The electric motor was invented in the 19th century.
B. The speed of the first electric vehicle could go up to 14 miles per hour.
C. You could take an electric taxi in London in 1850.
D. Almost one third of cars in the US were electric-powered in the early 1900s.
( )65. Where is this passage probably from?
A. A science newspaper.
B. A travel guidebook.
C. A health website.
D. An art magazine.

Did you see a robot picking tea before? Now there are tea-picking robots working around tea plants. This is happening in a tea garden in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.
Traditionally, picking these tea leaves is done by hand. However, most of the tea pickers are now in their 60s, and few young people want to take up the job. “That's why our team started to make tea-picking robots as early as 2019,” said Professor Wu, head of the study team.
This heavy(about 550 kg) but smart tea-picking robot was made by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. Its special arms and tracks(履带) make picking tea become a very easy job. It can find and pick a tea leaf in just 1.5 seconds. ▲
The team have tried their best to teach the robot to think better by using a special AI model. They took thousands of pictures of tea leaves and put them into the robot. The robot analyses the pictures and then gets to know what to pick in a tea garden.
Even though the robot is good enough now, the team still wants to make it even better. Using machines more in more areas will help to save time and money. “Tea-picking robots are the future,” said Wu. “In about five years from now, the robots will do the whole job of picking Longjing tea.
( )66. Why did Wu's team start to make tea-picking robots?
A. Because they want to make tea taste better.
B. Because human tea pickers are getting fewer.
C. Because young tea pickers are not good at the job.
D. Because it is expensive to have human tea pickers.
( )67. Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
A. It is smarter than most scientists.
B. It can get quicker if it gets heavier.
C. That is difficult for other AI robots.
D. That is faster than a human tea picker.
( )68. What does the underlined word “analyses” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Fills. B. Covers. C. Paints. D. Studies.
( )69. What does Wu talk about in the last paragraph?
A. The future of this robot.
B. The problems with this robot.
C. The creativity of this robot.
D. The importance of this robot.
( )70. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Tea-picking Robots and Longjing Tea
B. Tea Pickers Doing a Good Job
C. Robot Tea Pickers Coming into Service
D. Human Tea Pickers Out of Work

Have you ever walked in the dark? Can you imagine walking with your eyes closed? But this is the real experience for blind people. Although there are sidewalks for the blind, they are used by cars or bikes sometimes. The travel of the blind is still a big problem. Luckily, an Austrian company has developed a powerful travel tool for the blind—smart navigation(导航) shoes. They can help blind people walk safely.
The shoes have a camera and a system for sending information about things in the front. This system can sense objects 4 metres away. If the wearer is in a dangerous situation, the shoes will warn him or her by shaking and making a warning sound. In this way, the blind can avoid the danger.
Powered by a heavy-duty(耐用的) battery, this kind of shoes can be used for up to one week.
Now, this company is working on creating better shoes. They'll use AI technology to not only find objects on the sidewalks, but also tell wearers what they are. But it may take a relatively long time to make it come true.
“We believe that technology can bring convenience(便利) to humans. If the shoes can be widely used by the blind or people who cannot see things clearly, their life will change a lot,” the leader of this company said.

I’m glad to make a speech here. I would like to talk about the mobile phone. The mobile phone was invented by Martin Cooper in America in 1973. It has become an important part of our daily lives.(开篇介绍手机的发明者、发明地点及发明时间并谈论手机在日常生活中的重要性;被动语态和现在完成时的使用是加分项)
Jason thinks the mobile phone is very useful. However, Anna isn’t allowed to use it too much as her mum believes it may affect her study.(陈述不同的人对手机的看法)
In my opinion, mobile phones can be both helpful and harmful to teenagers. On the one hand, they help us communicate with others easily and receive a lot of information. We can also use them to study, like looking up words and watching educational videos. On the other hand, if we use them too much, it may indeed have a bad influence on our studies and health. So, if we use mobile phones properly, they can be a great tool for us.(谈论自己对青少年使用手机的看法和理由)
