The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the greatest works by Mark Twain. The book is so interesting. Even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favourites. After re-reading the book recently,I have learnt an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.
In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring tasks. What's in your mind when your mum tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain? I think most people have.
Tom Sawyer, however, thought“differently” when he was given a boring task. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence(篱笆). Tom's friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt“excited”about the task. “Only one in a thousand— maybe even two thousand boys can do this!” Tom said.、

Tom's words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. IfTom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don't complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you' ll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!
( ( )69. According to the writer, what will most people do when they are given a boring task?
A. Complain about it. B. Accept it. C. Study it. D. Worry about it.
( )70. What did Aunt Polly ask Tom to do in this text?
A. Visit Ben. B. Clean the floor. C. Paint the fence. D. Get apples.
( ( )71. Why did Tom say the underlined sentence to Ben in Paragraph 3?
A. To express his sadness. B. To catch Ben's interest. C. To show his anger. D. To complain about the task.
( )72. What does the writer learn from Tom Sawyer?
A. It is no use complaining. B. Silence is the best choice. C. Waiting is the only way out. D. Accepting others is bad.

In his lovely piece of writing Why Write ? , the writer Paul Auster shares a story about growing up as an eight-year-old in NewYork City. He was crazy about baseball, especially the New York Giants. The only thing he remembers about attending his first major league(大联盟) baseball game is that he saw his hero Willie Mays after the game. The young Auster went close to his hero bravely.
“Mr Mays,” he said, “could I please have your autograph(签名)?”
“Sure, kid, sure,” Mays replied kindly. “Have you got a pencil?”
Auster didn't have a pencil on him, neither(两者都不) did his father, his mother nor anyone else in his group.
Mays waited patiently, but when it became clear that no one present had anything to write with, he said, “Sorry, kid. We' ve got no pencil. I can't give you my autograph.”
From that day on, Auster made it a habit to never leave the house without a pencil in his pocket. “It's not that I had any special plans for that pencil,” Auster writes, “but I didn't want to be unprepared. I had been caught empty-handed once, and I wasn't about to let it happen again. The years have taught me this: If there's a pencil in your pocket, there's a good chance that one day you' ll feel like starting to use it. That's how I became a writer.”
What is your“pencil”? What is so important that without it you feel unprepared? I know some cartoonists always carry a pen and paper and some photographers(摄影师) always have a camera in their pockets. They are always prepared.
Pick your“pencil” and don't leave home without it.
