Glenn Cunningham, “the Kansas Ironman”, was an American middle-distance runner, and was considered the greatest American miler of all time.
Glenn was born in Kansas on August 4, 1909. At 7, Glenn was badly burned in an accidental fire in their schoolhouse. The little boy did survive after a long battle, though doctors told his mother that he was sure to die. Unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. But with his iron persistence and determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk and then to run.
By the time he was 12, he had beaten all the local high school runners. His legs remained deeply scarred, however. Throughout his life, he would have to spend time doing long warm-up exercises in order to maintain circulation (血液循环). In addition, his injuries meant that he could never run smoothly or efficiently.
When in university, he ran for the university track team and won his first big race, the 1932 NCAA 1500 meters. That summer, he was selected for the U. S. Olympic track team and came in fourth in the 1500-meter race in the Olympic Games. In 1933, he won the AAU 800 meters with a time of 1'51.8''. Overall, he ran 20 races during that summer. That year he was called “Ironman”.
Although Glenn might have used his name as a star athlete to make a great deal of money, he was more interested in helping others. He and his wife opened the Glenn Cunningham Youth Ranch and raised over 10, 000 foster children over three decades.
Throughout his life. Glenn won many awards including the Sullivan Memorial Trophy. He was also elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. As an example of the power of positive thinking and faith in oneself, Glenn continues to be an inspiration to many.
4. What did the doctors believe about Glenn after the schoolhouse fire?
A. He would become a great runner. B. He would not survive the accident.
C. He would recover very quickly. D. He would lose his motor ability.
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why warm-up exercises were necessary. B. What effects the accident had on Glenn.
C. How Glenn beat other high school runners. D. Why Glenn could recover from the injuries.
6. Which of the following is TRUE about Glenn’s career in 1932 and 1933?
A. He won a gold medal in the 1500-meter Olympic race.
B. He was called “Ironman” because of his university team.
C. He won the AAU 800 meters and ran 20 races in one summer.
D. He became a star athlete mainly to make a great deal of money.
7. Which of the following can best describe Glenn?
A. Successful and selfish. B. Brave and lucky.

Grimsey is a small island, about 6. 5 square kilometers in size. It lies 40 kilometers off the northern coast of Iceland. It is the northernmost inhabited part of Iceland and the only piece of the country inside the Arctic Circle. This cold, distant island — in an already cold and distant country — represents Iceland at its most remote and extreme. That is exactly what makes it attractive.
Before 1931, the only way to reach Grimsey was by a small mail boat that visited it just twice a year. There were only 58 registered residents living on the remote island as of January 1, 2025 — a number much smaller than the large population of seabirds there. Today, transportation options have greatly improved. The ferry (渡船) operates year-round between Dalvik and Grimsey, carrying up to 106 passengers on a journey of about three hours. It runs three to four times a week in winter and five times weekly in summer. Additionally, Norlandair provides flights to the island throughout the year, with two weekly flights in summer and three weekly flights in other seasons. Each flight takes about 30 minutes, and the stopover on Grimsey lasts from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the schedule and time of year.
Like many small Icelandic communities, Grimsey’s history is full of local stories. According to one story, the island is named after a Norse settler called Grimsey, who sailed from western Norway. “There is something special about walking along the island’s high cliffs (悬崖), while enjoying the peaceful green landscape surrounded by thousands of seabirds. But it is the kindness and warmth of the people that make Grimsey a welcoming and special place, “Halla, a local tour guide, explains.
Apart from the puffins (海鹦), the island’s main allure is its location. Grimsey lies at 66°N, which means it experiences polar nights. From early December to mid-February, the island remains in complete darkness for months.
8. What attracts many visitors to Grimsey?
A. Its distant and extreme natural setting. B. Its convenient transportation network.
C. Its large population of local residents. D. Its mild climate all year round.
9. Which of the following is TRUE about the transportation to Grimsey today?
A. The ferry to the island only operates during the summer.
B. It takes about three hours to fly from Dalvik to the island.
C. There are more weekly flights to the island in summer than in winter.
D. A mail boat is no longer the only way for people to reach the island.
10. What can be inferred from Halla’s words?
A. She values local friendliness. B. She prefers birds to humans.
C. She finds the high cliffs scary. D. She is an expert in island history.
11. What does the underlined word “allure” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Comfort. B. Attraction. C. Challenge. D. Disadvantage.
D
When homework and tests keep you up late at night, you may plan to make up for your lost sleep during the weekends. But is it useful?
A study published in the journal Current Biology shows that the habit of sleeping in on weekends doesn’t fix the damage that has been done by a lack of sleep during the week. Even worse, it may damage your health.
In the study, which was conducted over 10 days, 36 healthy young men and women with different sleep requirements were divided into three groups. The first group were asked to sleep nine hours a night and the second group five hours a night. The members of the third group slept for five hours on weekdays but rested as long as they wanted on the weekend.
The researchers found that people who lacked sleep ate more snacks and gained weight quickly. However, this wasn’t the case for the first group. That could be partially due to the shifting of the biological clock and changes to certain body hormones, especially hunger hormones. In order to catch up on their sleep during weekends, people in the third group would eat later as a habit. So their biological clocks shifted, which also changed the production of hunger hormones.
“The hormone leptin (瘦素) decreases appetite (胃口) , while the hormone ghrelin (胃饥饿素) increases appetite,” explained US researcher Vsevolod Polotsky. “Sleep shortage causes the leptin to drop and the ghrelin to rise, so you’re hungry and eat more.”
And even if they tried to sleep for as long as they wanted to during weekends, according to researchers, it was still not enough because they found it difficult to fall asleep.
Moreover, short and insufficient sleep schedules will lead to an inability to change blood sugar and increase the risk of metabolic (新陈代谢) disease in the long term.
12. What do we know about the study?
A. Participants were divided into two groups. B. Researchers studied 36 children and adults.
C. It lasted for more than two weeks. D. Each group follow different sleep requirements.
13. What did the study find about the participants who lacked sleep?
A. They tended to eat more and gain weight. B. They could fix the damage by sleeping in.
C. They lost interest in eating snacks on weekends. D. They needed exactly nine hours to stay healthy.
14. How does sleep shortage affect a person’s appetite according to the text?
A. By increasing the level of leptin. B. By making the hunger hormones balance out.
C. By causing leptin to drop and ghrelin to rise. D. By shifting the biological clock to eat earlier.
15. What is the main message the author wants to convey?
A. Healthy young people should sleep at least ten days.
B. Weekend sleep is the best way to avoid metabolic diseases.
C. Different people have different sleep requirements for health.
D. Sleeping in on weekends cannot make up for weekday sleep loss.

第二节 (满分25分)

When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid a tutor(家庭教师) forty dollars a week for her coming to my house and helping me with math. It ended up raising my marks from fifty to fifty-five.
I had to admit it was mainly my fault. Maybe I should have concentrated my math from the beginning. But studying math was a tough thing. Sitting on a chair to work on confusing math problems for two hours was a slow and painful process. During the process, I would fidget(坐立不安) and have many trips to the refrigerator in an attempt to get off that chair for at least five minutes.
During math tests, my teachers would always stay by my desk. My teachers and friends would frequently ask the question after tests,” How’s your math this time?" So I became extremely afraid of math. While normal people of my age were scared of some insects and adventurous travels, I feared anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class made me feel scared. The red marks on the test paper were also terrifying.
My fear of math got worse in ninth grade. Every report card I received from my new math teacher Ms Robbins had the comment to encourage me, "I'm glad to do what I can to help you.” But I couldn't tell her the real reason why I didn't ask for help-I didn’t want to be considered stupid. Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time, something that the whole class had understood but I. So instead, I ended up not caring about anything related to math, without working hard on math at all. And I concluded everything would work out in the end
Eventually, my classmates and I took the final test that would lead to our graduation from middle school and stepping into high school. Days after the exam-- on a rainy summer morning, Ms. Robbins called me.
Paragraph 1:
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent.

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. D

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share an amazing experience I had recently. Our student union organized a “Wall Painting” activity to refresh old school walls with themes ranging from traditional Chinese culture to colorful campus life.
Our team painted a large picture of natural scenery on one wall. We first cleaned the walls thoroughly, then sketched the outline with chalks, and finally filled it in with bright colors. Our school now looks lively.
It was tiring but rewarding. It taught me how teamwork can literally brighten our surroundings. I felt a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. I’ve attached a photo of our finished work. I hope you like it!
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office. After asking me to sit down, she told me that I failed the math test. And she suggested that I should spend another year in middle school if I wanted to be admitted to a relatively good high school. I burst into tears when I heard the news. Seeing that, Ms. Robbins came to comfort and encourage me, and said she'd like to offer any help if necessary. After leaving her office, I was anxious, wondering how to tell the bad news to my parents
Paragraph 2
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent. My body shook, waiting for their blame. However, they encouraged me to have another try in ninth grade. It was then that I determined to take math seriously. The following day, I turned to Ms Robbins for help and told her about my determination. Ms. Robbins was happy that I finally decided to work hard on math. Thanks to her patient guidance, I made great progress and was not afraid of math any more. Finally, I made my way to a good high school and a university. Now I’m a doctor and I' m proud of myself.
