Sitting in the garden for my friend’s birthday, I felt a buzz (振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started off: “Dear Mr. Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). The position — measuring soil quality in the Sahara Desert as part of an undergraduate research program — had felt like the answer I had spent years looking for.
I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of the road for my science career.
So I was shocked when, not long after the email, Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shocked — and overjoyed — when she invited me to talk with her about potential projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all.
I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue.
When I applied to graduate school, I found three programs promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about.
Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them.
24. How did the author feel upon seeing the email sender’s name?
A. Anxious. B. Angry. C. Surprised. D. Settled.
25. After talking with Professor Devon, what did the author decide to do?
A. Criticize the review process.
B. Stay longer in the Sahara Desert.
C. Apply to the original project again.
D. Put his heart and soul into the lab work.
26. What did the author think of the project with the robotics professor?
A. Demanding. B. Inspiring. C. Misleading. D. Pioneering.
27. What can we learn from this passage?
A. An invitation is a reputation. B. An innovation is a resolution.
C. A rejection can be a redirection. D. A reflection can be a restriction.
C
Left-handed people, making up only about one in ten of the population, often face challenges in a world designed for right-handers. However, they are over-represented in certain one-on-one sports like fencing (击剑) and table tennis.
The conventional explanation for this is that the scarcity of lefties means right-handed athletes lack familiarity with them as opponents. Nevertheless, Dr. Tim Simon, a researcher in Italy, suspected that left-handers might have a natural-born advantage in these sports. To test his idea, Dr. Simon studied the performance of top athletes in badminton, table tennis, tennis and three types of fencing for more than a decade. He reasoned that if the advantage was only due to unfamiliarity, it would decrease at the highest levels of competition, where players would be wise to lefties’ tricks. However, if it was an inborn factor, the advantage might actually increase.
His research revealed an interesting pattern. In foil (花剑) and épéé fencing (重剑), and table tennis, there was indeed an increase in left-handedness at the summit. For example, 18% of the top 200 male épéé fencers and 23% of the top male foil fencers were lefties, but that went up to 28% and 31% respectively when only the top 100 were considered. The other three sports, however, did not show this effect.
Dr. Simon suggests this difference comes from how left-handed people’s brains work. He believes their brains are especially good at processing visual, spatial and timing information and generating quick responses, which is crucial for those rapid-action sports such as foil and épéé fencing. Table tennis requires similar skillfulness. Sabrefencing (佩剑), by contrast, involves larger swinging movements similar to those employed in tennis and badminton.
Even tiny differences in brain activity can make a huge impact at the highest level, where “being a split second faster than an opponent separates victory from defeat.” This research helps us understand that individual differences, even minute ones, can lead to unique strengths and successes.
28. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “scarcity”?
A. Equality. B. Innocence. C. Rarity. D. Imbalance.
29. What did Simon’s experiment seek to distinguish?
A. Different athletes’ tricks. B. Two sources of advantage.
C. Top players’ performance. D. The impacts of unfamiliarity.
30. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 imply?
A. Different fencing events vary a lot.
B. Left-handers favor specific fencing styles.
C. Lefties have an edge in certain top-level sports.
D. Athletic left-handers account for a higher percentage.
31. According to Dr. Simon, what leads to leftists’ sport-specific excellence?
A. Their unique brain structure. B. Their superior technical skills.
C. Their swifter brain processing. D. Their special movement patterns.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I put on a headset, and within seconds I am somewhere else. Ice sheets float on dark water. Wind brushes past my ears, sharp and restless. In the distance, mountains glow under the moonlight. Moments later, I find myself inside a museum, leaning close to a painting I have never seen in real life. 32 This is the promise of virtual reality (VR): a world delivered to us without leaving home.
There is much to appreciate in this form of travel. 33 There is no need to consider weather conditions, health issues or financial pressure. You may enter distant places at any moment and leave just as freely. For those restricted by schedule, health, or income, VR quietly removes barriers that traditional travel sets in place.
34 Travelers wander through unfamiliar streets, sample local dishes, and engage face-to-face with people shaped by different traditions. Such encounters awaken the senses and create lasting memories. More importantly, they change how places feel to us, not just how we understand them.
This distinction is clear, because learning about a destination is not the same as being there. Virtual travel offers designed scenes and programmed sensations, but it remains carefully controlled. Real travel, by contrast, is shaped by unpredictability. 35 In those unplanned moments, understanding becomes lived rather than recorded.
Virtual reality will undoubtedly continue to evolve, enriching how we preview journeys and imagine distant worlds. Still, it cannot replace actual presence. Travel is not simply about seeing farther, it is also about feeling where you stand. 36
A. I am not moving, yet I am traveling.
B. Yet real travel leaves a deeper mark.
C. My feet ache as my journey stretches across the day.
D. Virtual journeys are convenient, time-saving, and widely accessible.
E. Some knowledge, it seems, only arrives when your feet are on the ground.
F. It demands choices, adaptation, and constant awareness of the unexpected.
G. But the convenience may gradually weaken our desire to explore the real world.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Ancient Chinese astronomy presents a fascinating combination of scientific discovery and poetic storytelling, 52 the heaven was not just observed but deeply woven into cultural identity. For thousands of years, scholars like Shi Shen, Gan De and Zhang Heng 53 (study) the sky to track time as well as to seek meanings in the stars, creating a unique system that blends practicality with imagination.
A timeless example is the legend of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl. In this tale, two star-crossed lovers — 54 (represent) by the stars Altair and Vega — are forever divided by the Milky Way, yet allowed to meet once a year on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month. This story is celebrated during the Qixi Festival, 55 (reflect) how ancient Chinese linked celestial (天体的) patterns to human emotions and turned cold starlight into symbols of devotion and longing.
56 (equal) attractive is the role of the Big Dipper, also known as Seven Stars of the North, arranged in a bowl-shaped formation. Ancient observers noticed that the direction of its “handle” shifted 57 the seasons — pointing downward in winter and upward in summer — acting as a natural calendar for farmers. Moreover, by following an imaginary line through two stars in its bowl, one could locate Polaris, the 58 (changing) “North Star” that laid the foundation of Chinese navigation. In folk culture, the fourth star of the Big Dipper was seen as Wenquxing (Star of Literature), adding spiritual weight to the scientific use of the asterism (星群).
From astronomers predicting eclipses (日食,月食) to 59 (poet) writing about starry reunions, ancient China’s cosmic explorations bridged logic and legend. The stars became a language — 60 way to explain life’s mysteries and connect earthly lives to the infinite sky. Today, with the development of science and technology, humans are casting their glance to the deeper universe. It’s high time that ancient wisdom was absorbed 61 (fuel) modern explorations.

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
阅读下面短文,并按要求完成相应任务。
My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” She added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think — wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
That night, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details.

W:That's a good idea. You could feed it a simple plot, and it would help shape the details.
M:Exactly.I might also try using it to learn a language.I read that it can explain grammar in a simple way.
W:That's exciting. It's interesting to think of all the ways AI can help us.

W:I'm not quite sure whether to focus on the impact of social media or the role of advertising in shaping
public opinion.I need to be clear in my head about it.
M:Well, both are interesting subjects.Social media is more about communication, while advertising focuses
more on influence.
W:Yes,so would it be better to choose one of them,or can I combine both?
M:You can combine both, but you should think about how they interact. For instance, think about how
advertising uses social media platforms to reach people. It's about finding the right balance.
W:Oh,yes, that makes sense.I also wanted to ask about the word count.Do we have to stick strictly to the
limit?
M:Yes,it's important to stay within the word count. It helps you focus on the key points.Try not to go over

W:OK,thank you.I feel much clearer about it now.
M:I'm glad to help,Jennifer.Don't be afraid to ask if there's anything else you want to know.Good luck!
