My best friend and I were headed to Italy for travelling. When we started packing for the trip the week before, she said, “We are told to only take our smallest suitcase, and we have to use it for ten days. So, think small.” I’d never packed this light for a trip before, and I’d been big on fashion and I loved clothes. I would have to learn to re-wear clothing for the ten days we were there. It would be a challenge.
I looked at my wardrobe (衣橱) stuffed with so many items. How had I accumulated so much clothing that I didn’t even wear? I picked out basic pieces, finding tops, shorts, pants, and skirts that I could mix and match for the warm June weather we would be enjoying. Off we went, and as we sipped delicious drinks on rooftop restaurants in Italy, we talked about our suitcase packing. Even though we chose far fewer clothing items than we were used to, we were having the best time. It was like taking a worry off our backs by not having to think about what to wear every day. Was this just travel happiness that wouldn’t last as soon as I got home? Could I live this minimally at home and be happy with it once the vacation was over?
As soon as I got home, I began eliminating non-necessities from my wardrobe. Afterward, getting ready for the day was no longer a chore. I lived for relationships and experiences rather than things, and I’d never been happier.
Who knew that a trip to Italy with a small suitcase would show me the freedom I had yet to explore? It was one small suitcase, but it was a world of freedom.

With their bright green eyes and slim bodies, gulper sharks are odd-looking, prehistoric creatures that used to be found worldwide in waters from 200 to 1,500 meters deep. But now, they face a crisis. Three quarters of the species are threatened with extinction, targeted for their liver oil, which is particularly rich in a chemical compound known as squalene (角鲨烯), commonly used in beauty products for its antioxidant and moisturizing (保湿) properties.
New international trade protections, announced at the 20th conference of parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), could turn the fate of these deepwater sharks around. Gulper sharks have been listed on CITES Appendix Ⅱ, which regulates trade of the species across international borders and improves monitoring, while endangered whale sharks are among those that have been uplisted to CITES Appendix Ⅰ, which bans all commercial trade of the species and their products.
According to a 2024 study, nearly two-thirds of threatened deepwater sharks have been used in liver oil products. Gulper sharks are particularly prized because their liver oil contains over 70% squalene, the highest percentage of any shark family. As a result, populations of gulper sharks have dropped by more than 80% in some regions. This could be disastrous for gulper sharks, which mature late in life and have slow reproductive rates. Once their populations decline, it can take years for them to recover. By one scientific estimate, the dumb gulper shark is a species that has been severely overfished in Australia, and would take 86 years to recover just 25% of its original population size.
Before today, despite there being more than 100 sharks and rays listed in CITES Appendix Ⅰ and Appendix Ⅱ, few were deep-water species. Luke Warwick, director of shark and ray conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society, said, “Sharks are the second most endangered group of species on the planet, and many are running out of time… The latest decision could not have been more urgent.”

There comes a point in many a parent’s life when their sweet child begins to fire back with cutting remarks and sarcastic (嘲讽的) behaviour that’s enough to make parents want to go into hiding for the foreseeable future.
Why are teens mean sometimes? According to Counselling Directory member Ana Hristov, teens still lack emotional control, and the part of the brain that deals with reasoning and planning is still developing. That can result in poor filtering (过滤) and general directness that may come across as rude, touchy and sometimes even mean. On top of all, their nervous system is maturing, meaning teens can experience a heightened sensitivity to stress, which can make them overreact to the situations, with small stimuli leading to big reactions.
Another factor for the big change around this time has to do with the normal process of slowly distancing from family in favour of peers (同龄人), where they go through great efforts to fit in and avoid being perceived by their peers negatively. Social media and study pressure add an extra layer of complexity to the mix.
It’s OK to let this kind of behaviour slide occasionally for the sake of not getting into a constant cycle of negative interactions. But Hristov cautioned that if the rude behaviour is directed at siblings (兄弟姐妹), for instance, parents need to pull up on it immediately as your other children need a visible demonstration of you taking a firm stand, and it must be made clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated in your home.
However, immediate punishment can sometimes escalate the situation further. Similarly, responses rooted in further shaming or sarcasm will increase defensiveness rather than encourage reflection. Hristov’s advice for parents in this position is to respond, rather than react. Try to remain calm, reflecting on what might be underneath the comment. Revisit the conversation when everything’s calm. Lastly, parenting teens is hard work so it’s vital that you take time out to recharge your batteries.

After that planting, she was unable to do any of her gardening work. And then, one day, she was gone.
