Chinese singer Zhou Shen has recently wrapped up the North American leg of his world concert tour. During his performances, he sang several well-known Chinese songs, such as The Lights of China and May Love Bloom. Through his music, Zhou aimed to show the beauty of Chinese culture to audiences across the world. The tour covered three major cities — New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver.
In an interview with China Daily, Zhou shared his thoughts on introducing Chinese music to global listeners. “Music has no borders (边界,国界),” he said. “I believe that if a piece of music is truly excellent, people from different cultural backgrounds will feel its charm.” He also expressed his hope to bring people together through singing, adding that he feels a deep responsibility as a Chinese artist to share his culture with the world.
Zhou’s concert attracted not only Chinese fans but also many local listeners who were curious about Chinese music. Some audience said they were deeply moved by the melodies, even without understanding the lyrics. One Canadian concertgoer said, “I don’t speak Chinese, but his voice made me feel the emotion. I will definitely listen to more of his songs.” Another local attendee described the concert as “a magical experience” that opened a door to a culture she had never explored before.
Rather than simply seeking fame abroad, Zhou views each performance as an opportunity to challenge the common assumption that non-English music has limited global appeal. He believes that language should never be a barrier to appreciating good music. By continuing to sing in Chinese and staying true to his artistic roots, Zhou hopes to inspire more international listeners to look beyond language barriers, discover the richness of Chinese musical traditions, and develop a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and its timeless beauty.
4. What is the main purpose of Zhou Shen’s world concert tour?
A. To promote his songs all over the world.
B. To compete with local singers in Canada.
C. To introduce Chinese culture through music.
D. To become more famous in North America.
5. According to Zhou Shen, what is the key to making Chinese music accepted globally?
A. Performing only in big cities.
B. Translating lyrics into English.
C. Using more Western instruments.
D. The high quality of the music itself.
6. What can be inferred about the local audience in North America?
A. They preferred English versions of his songs.
B. Most of them already knew Chinese songs well.
C. They were only interested in Zhou Shen’s appearance.
D. Some were touched by his music despite the language barrier.
7. What does the underlined word “assumption” in the last paragraph most likely mean?
A. A question that has no clear answer.
B. A suggestion that everyone agrees with.
C. A belief that is taken for granted but may be false.
D. A fact that has already been proven by research.
C
The Little Prince by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery is far more than a children’s book. First published in 1943, this thin volume has become one of the best-selling books in history, translated into over 300 languages. But what makes a simple story about a boy from a tiny planet so appealing to readers of all ages?
The story begins with a pilot who crashes his plane in the Sahara Desert. There, he meets a young boy - the little prince. As the prince tells the pilot about his travels to different planets, readers are introduced to a series of strange adults: a king who rules nothing, a businessman who counts stars he does not own, and a lamplighter who follows orders without thinking. Each of these characters is trapped in his own meaningless routine, unable to see what truly matters in life. Through these characters, the author gently criticizes the foolishness of grown-up behavior.
At the heart of the story is the little prince’s relationship with a rose on his home planet. He loves the rose, but her pride and his youth drive him away. Only after visiting Earth and meeting a wise fox does he learn an important lesson: “What is essential is invisible to the eye.” The fox teaches him that love and friendship come from taking time to “tame” someone — to build a connection that makes that person unique in the universe. This lesson becomes the central message of the entire book.
What makes The Little Prince special is its ability to speak to both children and adults. Children enjoy the imaginative journey through space, while adults find deeper meanings about love, loneliness, and the loss of childhood wonder. The book’s simple language and beautiful watercolor drawings also add to its charm.
Although written over eighty years ago, The Little Prince remains timeless. It reminds us not to lose our sense of wonder as we grow up. As the fox says, “You become responsible forever for what you have tamed.”
8. What is the main purpose of the review?
A. To explain the plot of The Little Prince in detail.
B. To introduce the life of Antoine de Saint-Exupery.
C. To recommend The Little Prince to readers of all ages.
D. To compare The Little Prince with other children’s books.
9. Why does Saint-Exupéry include the king, the businessman and the lamplighter in the story?
A. To gently point out how adults often behave foolishly.
B. To slightly show the little prince’s fear of the strange adults.
C. To fully entertain readers with funny and unusual behaviors.
D. To clearly explain the reason why the pilot crashed in the desert.
10. Which of the following may the fox agree with?
A. Eyes fail to see what cannot be tamed.
B. Love requires time and personal connection.
C. The little prince should return to his rose immediately.
D. People should believe what they can see with their eyes.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward The Little Prince?
A. Doubtful. B. Favourable. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
D
For centuries, the Yangtze River has been home to many fish species. But too much fishing had pushed some native fish to the edge of disappearing. To save the river, China started a ten-year fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze in 2021. Now, new data shows the ban is working effectively.
Law enforcement along the river has been strengthened. In 2025, criminal cases related to illegal fishing dropped by nearly 40 percent from the year before. Other illegal fishing cases fell by 65 percent from 2021 levels, showing that tougher measures are working. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the river's ecosystem health improved between 2021 and 2025, compared with the period before the ban. This positive change means the long-term decline of fish resources has been successfully stopped.
The latest monitoring shows that from 2021 to 2025, a total of 351 native fish species were found in the Yangtze area. That is an increase of 43 species from the years just before the ban. In 2025 alone, the number of fish in the main stream was about twice as high as before the ban, which is a remarkable achievement.
The recovery is also good for local people. To support the ban, more than 230,000 fishermen have stopped fishing. The government has helped 141,000 of them find new jobs and provided pension(养老金) insurance for about 220,000. Those facing financial problems have also received temporary help to get through the transition.
Looking ahead, the government has a new action plan with 60 measures to further protect the river. These include restoring wetlands, protecting endangered species like the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Chinese sturgeon, and improving breeding technologies. Recently, about 550,000 young Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze to help rebuild their population.
The fishing ban has given the Yangtze a much-needed break. With continued protection and public support, the river's future looks brighter than it has in decades.
12. What happened to the Yangtze River after the fishing ban was introduced?
A. The number of native fish species continued to drop.
B. The ecosystem health showed clear signs of recovery.
C. The government reduced law enforcement along the river.
D. Most fishermen refused to cooperate with the government.
13. How does the author show the effectiveness of the fishing ban in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By explaining causes.
14. What can be learned about the government's new action plan for the Yangtze River?
A. It has successfully released all endangered species back into the wild.
B. It cares more about helping former fishermen than protecting fish species.
C. It focuses mainly on improving breeding technologies for endangered fish.
D. It combines habitat restoration with species protection and breeding efforts.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. China Started a Ban on the Yangtze River
B. How Overfishing Damaged the Yangtze River
C. Fishing Ban Brings Life Back to the Yangtze River
D. How Economy Benefits from the Yangtze River

The belief in talking to plants has existed for centuries. Ancient civilizations, such as the Greeks and local cultures, believed plants responded to energy, emotion, and sound. In the 1840s, German professor Gustav Fechner suggested plants might have feelings. ____16____
Technically, plants don't have ears or a nervous system, so they don't “hear” in the traditional sense. However, studies have shown plants can detect vibrations (振动) in their environment -including sound waves produced by human speech or music. ____17____ For instance, South Korean researchers found certain plant genes (基因) responded positively to classical music and human voice frequencies.
Some studies suggest that plants respond more favorably to female voices than male voices due to differences in pitch (音高) and frequency. Music types like classical or jazz have shown positive results, while loud rock music may stress plants. Ultimately, regularity and loudness may influence the result. ____18____
____19____However, that doesn't mean your words are wasted. The gentle vibrations from your voice, along with the regular care that comes from daily contact, could still create a more supportive environment for your plants. So while there is no direct scientific evidence, your green friends just might benefit from the attention.
Talking to plants may not be magic, but it does encourage a deeper connection with nature, mindful gardening, and perhaps even a little extra vibrational help. ____20____ That way, your plant may thank you in its own green way. So go ahead — speak softly some words of encouragement to your favorite leafy green plant.
A. Genes play an important role in plants' growth.
B. You might rely on science or just care for plants well.
C. Nobody has observed plants react to external factors.
D. They can detect and respond to sounds like speech or music.
E. We haven’t proven talking to plants directly speeds growth.
F. Gentle and calm sounds seem to create vibrations that are more beneficial to plants.
G. That laid the basis for the idea of a psychological connection between humans and nature.

An Unforgivable Mistake
A few years ago, the company I work for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found the apartment they had rented for us was next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of muggers (行凶抢劫者) in the park, I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put a $10 bill in my back pocket.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger bumped (撞) into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of muggers in the park occurred to me. It could have been a mugger! I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket. The money was missing! I immediately started to run after the jogger. I finally caught up with and grabbed him firmly by the arm. I started shouting and demanding that he give me the $10 bill. I’m not usually a hot-headed person, but I really lost my temper at that moment. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately interrupted (插话), “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. D 7. C

【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Rather than simply seeking fame abroad, Zhou views each performance as an opportunity to challenge the common assumption that non-English music has limited global appeal. He believes that language should never be a barrier to appreciating good music.(周并非仅仅为了在国外博取名声而进行演出,他将每一次演出都视为一个挑战人们普遍assumption的机会,即认为非英语音乐在全球范围内缺乏吸引力。他认为,语言绝不应成为欣赏优质音乐的障碍)”可推知,周深认为“非英语音乐全球吸引力有限”是一种被人们视为理所当然、但实际上可能并不成立的看法。因此“assumption”最可能意为“被认为是理所当然但可能是错误的信念”。

D. Critical.

【答案】16. G 17. D 18. F 19. E 20. B

Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked.

Paragraph 2:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness” on my mind. “How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth? Why was it that the jogger gave me the money? I still remembered his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I had met that jogger, but in vain.
Paragraph 2:
For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.
