Unit 2 Movie, Mirror of Life-Section 3 Using English in Context

 教学目标

It focuses on cultivating students’ language ability to use movie-related English in context, cultural awareness to understand movie culture differences, thinking quality to analyze movie themes critically, and learning ability to explore language independently and cooperate in groups.

 教学重难点

Key points: Master movie-related vocabulary and sentence patterns, and use them to describe movies and express opinions.

Difficult points: Understand the implied meaning in movie contexts and use English flexibly to discuss movie themes and characters.

Step 1: Lead-in (Warm-up and Activation)

The teacher starts the class by showing short clips of classic English movies, such as The Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump, which are recommended as reference for movie appreciation. After playing the clips, the teacher asks students some open-ended questions in English: “What’s your favorite movie in the clips? Can you describe the scene you just saw in simple English? Do you think movies can reflect our real life?” Then, invite 3-4 students to share their answers freely. During the sharing process, the teacher does not interrupt students’ expressions, but only gives appropriate prompts when students have difficulty in wording, such as reminding them of simple words like “moving”, “exciting” and “touching”. After the sharing, the teacher makes a brief summary: “Movies are like a mirror of life. They show us different life scenes and convey profound life philosophies. Today, we will learn to use English in the context of movies, so that we can better express our views on movies and understand the connection between movies and life.”

Design Intention: The classic movie clips can quickly arouse students’ interest in learning, as most students are fond of watching movies. The short clips are easy to attract students’ attention and reduce their nervousness in English expression. The guiding questions link the teaching content with students’ existing life experience, activate their prior knowledge about movies, and lay a foundation for the follow-up learning of language application in context. At the same time, the free sharing link helps exercise students’ oral expression ability initially, which is in line with the requirement of cultivating students’ language ability.

Step 2: Pre-context (Vocabulary and Sentence Pattern Preview)

First, the teacher presents the core vocabulary of this section on the multimedia courseware, including nouns (plot, character, theme, scene, actor, actress), verbs (reflect, convey, describe, appreciate, recommend), adjectives (moving, thrilling, inspiring, realistic, emotional) and phrases (be based on, take place, in my opinion, as far as I’m concerned, convey a message). For each word and phrase, the teacher gives a simple English definition and a sample sentence closely related to movie contexts. For example, for the word “reflect”, the definition is “to show or express something”, and the sample sentence is “This movie reflects the real life of ordinary people.” For the phrase “be based on”, the sample sentence is “The film is based on a true story.” Then, the teacher leads students to read the words and phrases twice, paying attention to the pronunciation and stress. After that, organize a quick matching activity: present the words on one side of the screen and their definitions on the other side, and ask students to match them in pairs. The teacher checks the matching results in time and corrects the wrong matches, emphasizing the key words that students are easy to confuse.

Next, the teacher introduces the key sentence patterns of this section, which are mainly used to describe movies and express opinions:  “The movie is about... It tells a story of...”,  “In my opinion, the most impressive part of the movie is...”,  “The movie conveys a message that...”,  “I think the character is... because...”. For each sentence pattern, the teacher gives a specific example combined with movie contexts, and then asks students to make simple sentences with the sentence patterns,

using the newly learned vocabulary. For example, ask students to say “In my opinion, the most impressive part of Forrest Gump is his perseverance.”

Step 3: While-context (Text Reading and Language Exploration)

This step is divided into three parts: fast reading, careful reading and language focus analysis, aiming to guide students to understand the text context and master the application of language in context.

First, fast reading: The teacher distributes the text materials of Section 3 (focusing on movie reviews and discussions about the connection between movies and life) to students, and asks them to read the text quickly to complete two tasks:  Find out the main topic of the text;  List the two movies mentioned in the text and their main themes. After students finish reading, invite them to answer the tasks. The teacher summarizes the main topic of the text: The text discusses how movies reflect real life and introduces two classic movies to illustrate the connection between movies and life. Then, check the answers to the second task and supplement the background information of the two movies appropriately, helping students better understand the text content.

Design Intention: Fast reading aims to cultivate students’ ability to obtain key information quickly, which is an important part of reading ability. The two tasks are set to guide students to read with goals, avoiding aimless reading. Supplementing the background information of the movies helps students understand the text context more deeply, laying a foundation for careful reading.

Second, careful reading: Ask students to read the text carefully and complete the following detailed tasks:  Underline the sentences that describe the characters in the two movies and analyze the characteristics of the characters;  Find out the sentences that express the author’s opinions on the movies and summarize the author’s views;  Fill in the table about the plot, theme and message of each movie. After students finish reading and completing the tasks independently, organize group discussions in groups of 4. Each group discusses their answers and exchanges their understanding of the text. During the group discussion, the teacher walks around the classroom, observes the discussion situation of each group, and gives appropriate guidance when students have disputes or difficulties. For example, when students have difficulty analyzing character characteristics, the teacher can prompt them to pay attention to the adjectives used in the text to describe the characters.

After the group discussion, invite representatives of each group to present their discussion results. For the character analysis part, the teacher guides students to summarize the character characteristics comprehensively and encourages them to express their own views; for the author’s opinions, the teacher helps students sort out the logical relationship of the author’s views, emphasizing the connection between the author’s views and the movie content; for the table filling part, the teacher checks the answers and corrects the wrong or incomplete parts, ensuring that students have a comprehensive understanding of the text content.

Design Intention: Careful reading helps students deeply understand the details of the text, grasp the logical structure of the text and the author’s views. The independent completion of tasks cultivates students’ autonomous learning ability, and the group discussion promotes students’ cooperative learning ability, allowing students to learn from each other and improve together. The teacher’s guidance in the discussion process can help students solve difficulties in time, ensure the effectiveness of the discussion, and at the same time cultivate students’ thinking quality by guiding them to analyze characters and themes.

Third, language focus analysis: Based on the text, the teacher extracts the key language points and analyzes them in combination with the context. For example, analyze the sentence “Movies not only bring us entertainment, but also make us think about life.”, emphasizing the usage of “not only...but also...”; analyze the phrase “convey a message” in the sentence “The movie conveys a message that we should cherish the people around us.”, and guide students to make sentences with this phrase in combination with their own favorite movies; analyze the attributive clause in the sentence “The character who is brave and kind has won the love of many audiences.”, explaining the usage of the attributive clause modified by “who” and
