Difficult Points: Understand the implicit meaning and metaphors in the text, such as the symbolic meaning of movie characters and plots; express personal views on the relationship between movies and life in fluent and accurate English. |
Step 1: Lead-in (Warm-up and Activation) The teacher starts the class by showing short clips (3-5 minutes in total) of classic movies such as Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption and Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child. After playing the clips, the teacher asks the students the following questions: “What do you think these movies are about? Do you find any connections between the movie plots and our real life? Can you think of a movie that reflects the reality of life?” Then, the teacher invites 3-4 students to share their answers in front of the class, and gives positive comments and guidance, such as “Your observation is very careful. This movie really shows the hardships and hopes in real life.” After the student sharing, the teacher writes the unit theme “Movie, Mirror of Life” on the blackboard and explains briefly: “As we can see from the movie clips, movies are not just a form of entertainment. They are like a mirror, reflecting the joys, sorrows, struggles and hopes in our real life. Today, we will learn Section 1 Reading for Meaning, and explore how movies reflect life and what we can learn from them.” Design Intention: The use of classic movie clips can quickly attract students' attention and arouse their interest in the class, as most senior high school students are interested in watching movies. By asking questions and organizing student sharing, the teacher can activate students' prior knowledge and life experience related to movies, help them establish a connection between the unit theme and their own life, and lay a good foundation for the subsequent reading teaching. At the same time, this link can also exercise students' oral expression ability and cultivate their awareness of participating in class activities. Step 2: Pre-reading (Vocabulary and Background Preview) First, the teacher presents the core vocabulary and phrases of this reading text on the multimedia screen, including emotional depth, classic scene, metaphor, reflect, resonate, moral dilemma, cultural connotation, protagonist, plot, etc. For each word and phrase, the teacher provides accurate English definitions, example sentences related to movies, and appropriate Chinese hints if necessary (avoiding excessive use of Chinese to ensure the English teaching environment). For example, for the word “metaphor”, the teacher explains: “A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn't literally true but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. For example, in The Shawshank Redemption, |
the birds symbolize freedom—it’s a metaphor.” Then, the teacher asks the students to read the words and phrases aloud twice, and invites some students to read them individually to correct their pronunciation and intonation. Next, the teacher briefly introduces the background of the reading text: “The reading text we are going to learn today mainly discusses the relationship between movies and life. It introduces how movies reflect the complexity of human life, the cultural connotations contained in movies, and the impact of movies on people's values. The text collects opinions from different people, including movie directors, audiences and critics, which makes the content more comprehensive and persuasive.” Finally, the teacher guides the students to predict the main content of the reading text: “Based on the unit theme and the core vocabulary we just learned, please predict what the text will talk about. You can discuss with your deskmate for a while, and then share your predictions.” After the discussion, the teacher invites several groups to share their predictions and writes down the key points of the predictions on the blackboard, which will be verified in the subsequent reading process. Design Intention: Vocabulary is the foundation of reading comprehension. Previewing core vocabulary before reading can help students reduce difficulties in understanding the text and improve reading efficiency. By providing example sentences related to movies, the teacher can help students understand the usage of vocabulary in specific contexts, which is conducive to their flexible application of vocabulary in the future. Skimming: The teacher asks the students to read the entire text quickly, without paying too much attention to details, and complete two tasks: (1) Find the topic sentence of each paragraph; (2) Summarize the main idea of the whole text. After reading, the teacher organizes the students to check the answers in groups. For each paragraph, the teacher invites a student to read the topic sentence, and then guides the students to summarize the main idea together: “The text mainly discusses that movies are a mirror of life, reflecting the real life, cultural connotations and human nature, and bring profound enlightenment to people.” Design Intention: Skimming is an important fast reading strategy.
